First I have to say I'm very disappointed that Mr. Barnhart has not brought someone in like Mike Pratt from the football side to assist in this process. It would seem he would have learned from his past experiences that this model would serve him much better than trying to go it alone.
Second regarding this statement: "Those other three SEC jobs are all better opportunities than Kentucky. If offered by the Cats and the timing permits, a smart coach will stall to see if a better SEC offer materializes. That’s a risk, but a calculated chance some may be willing to take. "
The way to handle that is you make an offer to Coach X and you give him time frame to respond - say one week. and you make it explicitly clear if he doesn't want to proceed to negotiate a contract at that point, you are moving on to Coach Y and will not look back.

A trained "search committee" which is available to the athletic director whose expertise should be ability to evaluate "coaching talent" extraordinaire in many many sports: should be much superior than a "fan"... Fans don't have the budget, training, or authority to hire the best football coach for Kentucky Football, or any other sport. Fans sell pop corn, sweep the floor, coach, referee, and love our winning Kentucky Wildcat Teams. Especially Kentucky Basketball and Kentucky Football who go a long way in paying for most other sports on campus.
Gillespie's coaching traits are much more available to professional athletic directors than fans guessing. The job description of an athletic director includes "assessing coaching talent" expertise.
Of course "hind sight" is close to 20 20. I would expect a trained athletic director to choose a higher per cent-age rate than fans who sell pop corn, referee, coach, sweep the floor and "finance" Kentucky Football and Kentucky Basketball.
