Matt Roark has been a key third-down target in the UK offense.
Kentucky’s receiver corps has been the driving force behind the Wildcats’ high-powered offense this season, but the unit faces both injury concerns and a suspension heading into Saturday’s game at Mississippi State.
Coach Joker Phillips announced Monday that junior wide receiver Matt Roark has been suspended for one game due to a violation of team rules. He’s caught 11 passes this season for 163 yards and has been a frequent target of UK quarterback Mike Hartline on third-down situations.
Roark was the No. 4 receiver in UK’s rotation. Phillips said redshirt freshman Brian Adams, who has caught one pass for 13 yards this season, will step into that role and get significantly more reps this week in practice.
Adams could move up even higher pending the status of La’Rod King. The sophomore wideout suffered a sprained knee on his second of two touchdown catches last week against Georgia.
Phillips said King, who has caught 27 balls for 337 yards and five touchdowns this season, is expected to return to practice by Thursday. The staff is “hopeful” he’ll be available for the MSU game.
Starter Randall Cobb, who leads the team with 47 receptions, is also dealing with an assortment of bumps and bruises, but is expected to be in the linenup.
