The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: UGA Edition

From a terrific first half to daytime blues for Terrence Jones and a sluggish finish, this edition of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly covers UK's 66-60 win over UGA from top to bottom.

Doron Lamb gave the Cats a sprark with 19 points off the bench.

THE GOOD:

Great First Half – I’m not sure if the Cats could have played a better first half. Although Terrence Jones ran into two early fouls and spent a lot of time on the bench, it didn’t seem to faze UK, which put together one of its most balanced halves of the season. Doron Lamb came off the bench to provide his usual spark with 11 first-half points. Darius Miller and Brandon Knight had 10 and 8, respectively, while DeAndre Liggins chipped in with six. You could hardly tell Jones wasn’t a big factor. The Cats shot 52 percent in the first half (including 6 of 12 from behind the 3-point arc) while holding the Bulldogs to 36 percent from the floor and no 3-pointers. That 18-point differential in first-half treys was the single-biggest factor in UK claiming the win. The second half saw the Dawgs hold a 12-0 edge from the 3-point line. Final margin? Six points. So there you go.

Miller Continues to Impress – People have been waiting a long time for Darius Miller to assert himself and play like he’s a veteran leader. We’re starting to see that on a consistent basis from the former “Mr. Basketball” from Mason County. Miller has now reached double figures in five straight games, averaging close to 14 points over that span. He even tried to elevate over a UGA defender and dunk the ball in this game, something we haven’t seen much of from perhaps the least flamboyant player on the roster. If he can keep coming up with that kind of contribution – as well as seven boards like he had Saturday – it’s going to make UK a lot more dangerous at tournament time. The Cats are consistently putting three major scoring threats on the floor, which is usually the mark of a dangerous team. If they can stretch it to four, look out.

THE BAD:

Daytime Blues for Terrence Jones – As I’ve documented on a few occasions this season, the early tips and day games just aren’t treating UK’s talented freshman forward too well. The West Coast native and noted night owl has seen some of his lowest production this season come in games that tip before dinnertime. In eight games that tipped prior to 6 p.m., he’s shooting 38 percent (35 of 91) and averaging only 13.3 points per game. He’s only topped 20 points in only one of those while posting five other 20-plus games on the season. His seven points on Saturday marked a season low. I really think there’s something to this. As Ray Charles once sang, night time is the right time for Jones.

THE UGLY:

Second Half Pace – I heard John Calipari suggest that the Cats weren’t trying to slow things down and sit on the big lead in the second half, but it sure looked that way. Whatever UK was trying to accomplish in the halfcourt sets, it wasn’t happening. When Georgia was shot out of its zone and applied aggressive man defense, UK didn’t seem to know how to respond. It’s in those situations that you’d expect the Dribble-Drive Motion offense to thrive, but the Cats didn’t seem to be looking to beat their man off the bounce and get to the basket. Settling mostly for jump shots late in the shot clock, UK had one of its worst scoring halves of the season (27) and put itself in a position to lose the lead in the final minute.
