***** FB Recruiting Mini-Updates *****

  • Talked to two guys tonight who we had featured earlier this spring who don't seem to be hearing much from UK anymore.

    TE/LB Stanley Higgins from Mississippi

    DB Jonathan Cook from Alabama

Both told me they'd still be interested in the Cats if communication was re-established, but I think maybe they're down the board a little bit now.

  • Seriously? We've backed off Cook? JD..you know the one spot ondefense that thin in talent evenwith the current 2012 class is at corner...Cook has nice size...what? 6'1 190? Is he slow or what? Seems like we are forgetting about corners. And Higgins...Kid is a stud..would be a perfect H-Back type...play FB..TE...great blocker and has quickness...or he could be a perfect fit at OLB in the 3-4....what gives? I wanted both these guys BAD.
And Timmons...why is Chuck Smith recruiting Timmons? No offense to CS...but he failed on Lamar Dawson...a kid from his own high school in Boyle Co. and let Jon Davis slip off to Illi at the last minute. Am I misktook or didnt Chuck also recruit the 4 star gem that was a huge bust in the cincy TE last year? Alex Smith? Chuck is a good position coach...but Cassity should be recruiting Cook and either Pat Wash or Jker should be all over Ryan Timmons.
Dont get me wrong..I adore Chuck Smith..a good LB in his own right and has coached up some no star kids into NFL backers...but it seems like he isnt turning out to be such a hot recruiter. Do you agree or disagree JD?
Who was recruiting Reon Dawson? Cousin of the best center in NFL history and UK alum Dermontti...I think DD should be hired as a centers coach and recruiter..and paid well..he was in financial trouble...what center or O-Line kid wouldnt listen to Dermontti? With his Super Bowl rings..Pro bowls and Hall of Fame...which very few centers get to? Untill MB starts paying guys and thinking outside the box...Joker will be in figurative "shackles". Off topic I know but Reon was a underrated CB IMO...6'2..sub 4.4 speed..a 40" vert...now we back off Jon Cook?
    Crazy if you ask me.
Am I wrong about Chuck Smith? I also question the Steve Pardue hire...he was sending mass talent our way..now we seem to get less and less kids from his old school..and we really havent gained any real ground in Ga since his hire...I question even more his ability to coach up our backs...Im not hating..I live UK football...IM 36..coached football in Breathitt Co...and one of my top "Bucket List" points is a UK National Title...in Football. I think Joker can get us there..Summers..Turner..Cassity..Minter..Pat Wash...love em all...Chuck Smith no doubt can coach LB's...but we havent had a 1000 yard rusher under Pardue have we?
Why not hire a recruiting specalist?
BTW JD...ID love to get into a job writing for something like 247...how does one go about landing such a job? I live football and B-Ball recruiting and everything UK.?

  • Sometimes other factors could play into where a guy rates on the staff's board beyond the physical tools. If the physical stuff is all equal, they could favor a guy who has a better chance to qualify, for example.

As for Chuck Smith, they recruit by area, so it's not really something that they pick and choose. But I have noticed that they'll "team up" more with this staff than previous ones. You see regional coach and position coach working together on several players.

  • Oh, there are opportunities out there if you're willing to put in the time and sacrifice a lot. Have you ever written anything professionally before? I'd be glad to look it over if you PM or e-mail me, and give you some advice.

  • Dawson was never coming to UK. He wanted to get out and away from home. Can you blame the kid for wanting to go to SoCal? It's an experience of a lifetime.

I beleive Alex Smith was a last minute decision/flip and a gamble at that. There's a reason why he didn't work out. You can't blame that on Chuck.

Davis was scared of competition when he saw Dupree commit because he thought Bud was going to play TE also. Davis would have gotten serious PT last year if he had stayed with UK.

I think Pardue played a large role in some of the GA kids we now have on campus.

are you still harping on Smith "missing" out on Lamar Dawson?? Have you not read some of the stuff written in other threads by people who actually knew Lamar, they have ALL stated that Lamar wanted nothing to do with staying in the state and was all too happy to go to USC. If I hear someone else say that we missed out on Lamar Dawson I'm going to scream.....

My knock on Pardue was his ability to coach backs mostly..if you'll re-read the post...yes..hes landed a couple very good players...but we no longer are getting the pipeline from his former school which sent a ton of underrated talent to UK. Chuck Smith can coach LB's...very well...its just he misses on so many. was saying Lamar was from his former school, Boyle Co...and if im not mistaken had UK in his Top 3 untill signing day when he went USC. I remember on old Catspause site the posts and Q&A's with he and Chuck Smith and how shocked CS was Lamar went elsewhere. Mabye Im wrong...but I am in no way a Chuck Smith hater..I was saying I think his recruiting some top targets should be reigned in and someone like Joker, or anyone of Summers, Turner, or Pat Washington and now Cassity too should take more recruits.

There is so much willful ignorance surrounding this football program. I'm not going to harp on any one thing in particular, but there are so many legitimate gripes to discuss that I'm always at a loss as to why so many myths persist in this fanbase.

Gripe about where we rank in facilities (and/or the lack of construction), gripe about fans booing the team, gripe about our national perception, gripe about any number of things that are there in front of you. BBD, you have a lot of enthusiasm, but you've developed these narratives in your mind that just don't correspond with reality.

And I lied, I am going to harp on one thing in particular. Pardue hasn't had a 1000 yard rusher? He got here in December of 2010! Last season! BBD, you say that as if he's been here 10 years with no results. Same for Pardue's recruiting. He's been a college coach all of one year. Even then, he was lead recruiter on Landon Foster, Pat Graffree, Dyshawn Mobley and Fred Tiller.

I'm not trying to attack you BBD, so don't take it that way. Just think a little about what you are saying before you go typing about this stuff.

  • BBD if you want to be a writer you should do research before spouting off. Chuck Smith has been responsible for recruiting a number of very good prospects to UK. He almost single handly has opened up the Indy area for UK after we signed no one from that state for 20 years. No one will read you if you make mistakes of substance.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on Coach Pardue. Why? Because it's too doggone soon for me to make the conclusions you seem to be implying. Coach Pardue has only been at UK for a year. Also, I believe he was moving on from coaching at LaGrange whether he came to UK or not, so I don't believe us leaving him at the "pipeline" was an option.

On Lamar Dawson, I think we can all conclude that some "family dynamics (dysfunction)" played the major factor in his decision to get "far away" from the home base. Sometimes it is best in life to geographically relocate oneself away from certain environments or certain people. Chuck Smith could have stood on his head for days and performed back flips until the cows came home, regardless of what he did, Dawson was getting away for reasons beyond Coach Smith's control.

  • You guys are right. Its too soon to jump on Steve Pardue and unfair...It was late...I was sleepy..my main point was about Chuck Smith..love him as a position coach ..dont really understand why he is given so much recruiting reponsibility. I can take constructive criticism as well as anyone. Forgive me for a lapse of focus and letting my emotions take over the facts. Facts are..it is too soon to tell what Pardue can do. And to condradict my late nite rant...UK is RB by commity, which makes for having a 1000 yard rusher even harder..and no one could have forseen the injuries to Clemons or Sanders. Clemons is a elite athlete..just hope the injury dont slow him down. SO...IM SORRY BBN..IM SORRY STEVE PARDUE. And tWhit...you know as well as I (IM from Breathitt CO.. ) That Lamar Dawson was gonna come to UK..before whatever happened with USC...he saw USC..who had no decent returning LB's...and UK..who had its best LB corps ever..(Trevathan GUY Sneed) and I guess he wanted the pt as a true frosh and he got it. Im not 100% sure..but didnt Lamar have to tweet or write something ofa statement because all the heckling and hate mail Chuck Smith was getting? I dont know...MY long term memory isnt the best. lol.

I don't know much about Dawson really. Those that know him which have absolutely made it well know time and time again that they know him say it was due to the fact that he wanted out of Kentucky. In my mind Dawson would have started from day 1 showing up on campus and we would have had one hell of a LB core for many years. He would have meant so much to this state and could have brought many basketball only fans to some games.
