It hurts, no doubt. But let's be honest. He'd be a RS Frosh with zero experience this year. Neloms is a Sr. I think we'll be fine at Safety even with Neloms moving over. I really really like Neloms at CB.

Very good points. Caffey had only done it in practice, Neloms can hold his own there. Faulkner and Lowery are both talented and are very capable of filling in at S.

Do these keep tabs on each others academic progress? From my experience in the fraternity this does wonders when your peers are making sure you are staying on track and also bringing underperformers along of need be.

But they have CATS. These players have all the academic support they could possibly need.

*Joker: 'I want to make a decision at QB as fast as we can. I wish it was already made, but it's not b/c of competition. Towles figures in.'

But CATS isn't collectively working towards having a successful football team in all phases.

But the depth ... always comes into play during the SEC season. Guys are going to get banged up.

Depth at CB, or safety? I agree that it hurts depth at CB for sure - let'sjust hope we have an incoming Frosh this fall step up to the plate. That's about the only way to slice it.....guess I'm just trying to find the silver lining here. lol

I'm just saying, with all the support and tutoring in place from CATS, there is absolutely no excuse to fail in the classroom. There's just not.

Oh I agree, I'm just saying that if you also have 84 guys letting you know it's not acceptable would do wonders as well.

Yeah, but half of us expected Neloms to move to CB anyway to start opposite of Caffey. I agree we don't know what we have in Caffey, but it hurts. He would be in the Top Ten worst guys to lose if you ranked them. Just off the top of my head....

    1. Smith
    2. Williamson
    3. Cobble
    4. Rumph
    5. King
    6. Another RB
    7. Smith
    8. Miller
    9. Dupree
    10. Warford..

OK, maybe not top ten, but top 15.

  • **Joker says he has better understanding of everything that is involved in being a head coach now that he's been through it a few times. It's stuff you just have to experience to understand. Said he's more prepared for all facets of it now.

**That will wrap up Joker's time at the podium. Players are in about 30-45 minutes. I'll be back later with more.

  • And the beat goes on,
Lets see some Simmons step up and make some plays with those wheels.
Mike B at one safety / Blaylock backing Mike up
    Lowery/Falkner at the other

Neloms at one corner Cartier Rice at the other?
Simmons and Dixon back them up playing the 3 & 4 corner?

    Farmy75

  • I think Faulkner and Lowery will be on the field together. If I remember correctly, they are listed on the depth chart at FS and SS, respectively.

    JDHLaw11

  • This is blow no doubt. In reality it puts safety in the same position corner back was in for this year. We'll be more "experienced" in the secondary but likely have less depth now at safety and corner. Faulkner and Lowery will now be playing safety...

Don't forget about Brown, he's going to be a pretty important piece of our defensive backfield this year.

Still can't get over Caffey letting his teamates down like this.

Is it just me or does media day always start out with some really bad news?

I know there was the Curtis Pulley deal a couple years ago, Mister Cobble and I'm probably forgetting some others...

It's that way for every program in nation. We just know the names of our guys and don't know the name of the random guy at Tennessee who is inelgibile

I hope so. with all due respect to Benton, and I love stories about scrappy walkons who earn PT through dedication and hard work in practices, we've got to get our best athletes on the field for defense.

Seriously? Of course they keep tabs. The 'dropout" rate amongst the football team is MUCH less than of the general student body.

You say "would do wonders". 1/85 scholarship guys is not elligible. That's a hell of an accomplishment IMO. Compared to the general student body that's outstanding. Compared to the rest of the sec it's outstanding.

You're right. That's definitely the silver lining here. This one just stings a little more because we were expecting so much from him this fall.

Benton is no scrub athletically, don't think he's a rudy.
Lowery and Faulkner will both get plenty of PT this year. As has been mentioned it takes DEPTH to compete in the SEC.

I just hope one of the Blaylocks can get it going this fall.

    Farmy75

  • I wonder if this is a problem with the kids capacity to learn or a Cobble thing where he just let the academics go to chase the ladies. The chase the ladies thing is a common cause of new college students academic woes.

    Cll80

  • I think you'll likely see Z. Blaylock and J. Harris play this season as true freshman. I think Phillips mentioned Harris in the presser.

Benton made some plays last season.

Great points. Couple that with all of our recruits making it and really outside of Ridge Wilson no off field stuff this summer to boot. Overall, bad news but we have much worse offseasons and media days in our recent past.
