  • Now would be a great time to inquire about a Penn State CB for depth....

**Joker says he has better understanding of everything that is involved in being a head coach now that he's been through it a few times. It's stuff you just have to experience to understand. Said he's more prepared for all facets of it now.

Please tell me how this isn't Joker himself contradicting Barnhart & Brooks saying Joker was ready to be HC. Seems it's amunition for those the opposed Joker being hired. Thanks.

  • Since it's our first game, I'll consider this relevent to the thread...

I've seen Clint Hurtt's name popping up a lot more frequently in the last 24 hours, especially now that Hill is out at UF due to the Miami scandal. Not going to lie, I wouldn't mind a bit if he exits the UL program here soon.

  • Wow...Caffey...wow! A freshman moves positions and is slated as a starter and then loses it in the classroom, unbelievable! The good news is that before Caffey switched positions, I thought Neloms would move back to CB and open up the S position for Faulkner and Lowrey. Hopefully, those two young safeties will get a lot of experience this year.... Anytime you lose a starter it's hard to take, but especially in a must win year for the head man. I really hope Minter can dail up some schemes to lessen this blow.

You think they would hire him since he had issues with the scandal as well? Or popping up as trouble with NCAA?

Nobody is ready to be a head coach until after they have been one for a few years......and that's when you realize you can or can't do it. Sometimes, you realize it very quickly. Then, there are some who don't realize they can't do but still try to but that's mainly on the high school and youth league level.

Not sure him being fired soon really has any effect on them in the short term, or our game with them. He has already worked his magic for UL and gotten them a ton of highly regarded Miami/South Florida recruits who will be hitting the field against us on 9/2.

Only if the NCAA starts poking into why all those South Florida/Miami stud recruits started following Hurtt to UofL like he's the pied piper, yet UofL can't get the kids at the UofL HS (Trinity) 20 minutes from campus to stay at home...

Could you imagine the fallout if Hurtt gets canned, these kids get ruled ineligible and UL's perception takes a hit sending them further down the conference realignment ladder.

  • Faulkner was behind Neloms on the DC. Benton and Lowery are battling for the other spot, with Lowery supposedly being close to taking it coming out of spring practice. With Neloms moving to CB, I assume that puts Faulkner as the starter unless one of the freshmen comes in and takes over. Faulkner and Lowery are not at the same Safety spot.

  • Losing starters always hurts but damn people its football. You are going to lose kids during the year. Get over it. Next man up, Go Cats!

Joker was experienced enough to be given a shot as the head coach. He earned that by his performance on staff for Brooks. If you didn't anticipate that he would have more to learn once he was in the captains seat then you have never been promoted to a higher responsibliity postion before.
There are some things you have to learn by doing.

Why are you trying to attack Brooks/Barnhart? get over it and support this team here and now.

A to the mother-touching MEN! It's time to put the bickering and complaining to bed and support this team. Whether you think Joker is the man for the job or not he's the one that has the job this season and that isn't changing, might as well get onboard.

UF's recruiting coordinator just resigned as a fallout from the Miami mess and rumblings from the NCAA are that penalties are coming for those that were involved. Clint Hurtt is known to be involveved with Shapiro at Miami, the question that remains is if he's still cheating at UL. Personally, I don't think he went to the river city and hit the straight and narrow, especially when you see all the recruits he's pulliing out of South Florida.

Phillips says that he is "more prepared" now than he was. Says that there are "some" things about being HC that have to be experienced to understand.

In your mind, this is a complete and total admission that he was wholly unprepared to be a head coach, and Brooks and Barnhart were literally lying to you.

So not only a nitpicky little argument you've developed here, but based on actual statements that don't say what you believe (or would like to believe) the statements actually say.

VH, I'm more prepared today to do my job than I was two years ago. Does this mean I was absolutely unqualified to perform my job two years ago? If my mentor told you two years ago that I was ready for the job, was he lying?

Are you understanding the concept that you can be "ready" to do something at a certain point and then become "more prepared" and have a "better understanding" of that thing two years later?

I guess it depends on if that QB he had committed to Miami that the Yahoo article indicated as recieving impermissable benefits, who then followed him to UL has anymore skeletons in the closet.

  • I'm sure it won't happen, but I'd like to see Joker open the first Satuday scrimmage to the public as a way to stir fan enthusiam.

You're right, they're not going to do that. If you want to see them make sure you head out to Fan Day tomorrow night.

Yeah, I know. Autographs and fireworks don't do much for me though. Unless you're into them, there's not a lot for you at FAD.

Well, they are staging their first full practice of training camp at Fan Day, so there's that....

I went last year and it was pretty rudimentary. Can't even remember if they wore pads. I'll probably still go, if I can get a ride (I'm temporarily carless), but I'd like to get an eatly look at a scrimmage.

No, but I disagree with you (among others).

Go to anybody who was an assistant coach, then promoted to head coach and ask them if they thought they had it all figured out before becoming a head coach. I'm guessing most of them say they probably didn't and all of the other ones are lying. Joker was ready to become a head coach, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a learning curve. Of course, that learning curve is highlighted even more when the talent level isn't where it needs to be; I've been through that before with my tennis team.

Nice job trying to rain on everyone's parade with your charades, but you're not bringing me down to your level.......and you're not welcome. biggrin

  • The NCAA won't let a team wear pads in its first handful of practices (maybe first two practices...not sure of the exact number). I know they didn't wear pads last year, and I know they won't wear them this year.

I think it's two days in shorts and helmets; two days in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts; then the 5th day is full pads. If memory serves correctly...
