**** Mini Update - Apollo OL Hunter Bivin ****

  • Spoke with Hunter briefly tonight just to check and see if he still hears from anyone a lot since his commitment to Notre Dame, and he told me he does, but he's always been one of the guys who has made it clear that once he made a decision, he didn't want to do the commit/de-commit thing. Don't expect him to change his mind, although he says that, after watching what his brother went through, things can always change in recruiting. Hunter says Kentucky's staff stays in touch with him to let him know they respect his decision, but wants to let him know he'll always have the opportunity to be a Wildcat if he changes his mind.

  • Also... Bivin has accepted invitations to play in the 2013 Under Armor All-American Game and the Team USA vs. The World all-star game in Austin, Texas.

  • There is a lot more to this story. I don't know that he will change his mind but it is not completely out of the question.

  • Would love to get Hunter to switch, but the only thing I know about the situation is that Jacob Hyde owned him at one of the camps they both attended.

  • Bivins seemed to really blow up after the combine around the national championship (IIRC) ky fans knew who he was already but after that was when the big boy dominos started to fall.
I think the only way uk gets back in the mix is if Norte Dame changes coaches from a bad year AND UK has a good season.

  • Perhaps it would be like pissing in the wind, but with the state producing so many(6?) invitees to the Army All American game this year we need to have coaches camped out at these kids houses & schools. It would be huge to lure these kids in to the fold and it sucks that they are UL fans or looking to go out of state with so little consideration for UK.

It is very unfortunate that of these kids, not one has been on record as being a UK fan. I pray that the perception of UK football begins to change over the next decade and these 4-5* young men take pride in wanting to play for the Commonwealth's Real Team! UofL is a great college, but they are a far cry from UK. GO BIG BLUE!!!

No sh*t. How frustrating is it that the state FINALLY has a year where it produces so many nationally-recognized stud recruits, yet hardly a one will even remotely consider UK? This is the biggest thing that has to change about UK football, i.e. its perception among the kids growing up to where it is viewed as an honor to go play there instead of wanting to take the first train out of the state or to Louisville.

Yes and no. When half of those five or six kids come from Trinity, it really doesn't matter who the coach at UK is. They're not coming here.

But you hate to miss on a guy like Bivin and not be mentioned in glowing terms by Timmons. That only compounds matters.

This is a huge season for the Cats and Joker. Football recruiting traction is at a disconcerting low level right now.

Agreed. I'm pulling like crazy for Joker & Co. to get the program back on an upward trajectory. That said, the state of recruiting would be another indicator for the powers that be to consider when evaluating whether they need to make a change after this season. Winning at this level is all about having talent, so in addition to the play on the field, you've got to keep a constant eye on how recruiting is going.

Spot on about Trinity. It simply ain't happenin when it comes to Trinity kids. As far as Hunter goes, the minute ND offered that was it for everyone else. Had the not offered I think (from what I heard anyway) it would have been LSU in the lead and UK would have had a shot. I don't know what kind of a shot but a shot none the less.

  • Bivins evidentially didn't want to commit at that point on an unofficial visit without his mom. He never made an official visit anywhere. He was pressured to commit by some folks who had another agenda. Apollo was going through a coaching change when this happened. I still think this one could turn around if UK has a big season.

At this point UK is unlikely to get many (or any) commitments until kids see if this version of the Cats looks like a football team. If they end up so so and even if Mitch wants to stick with Joker for another year Barnhart will have to consider problems with recruiting which may ultimately be insurmountable. The negative press piling up on Joker has become a huge problem and continues to grow with every publication.

with joker going all-in on Newton i knew jokers fate would be tied to morgan. i'm not sure but i might have posted that last year/last bowl game. joker needs a big year. not having a solid backup plan to morgan might have sealed jokers fate.

  • Recruiting under Joker has improved over the 2 years prior to his taking over the HC duties and he has brought in coaches that can recruit so that's a positive.

We don't need to stress about recruiting this year just yet, I still think this will be a superb year in recruiting and am hopeful that the product on the field is infinitely better than last year.
