** Why NBA will never match college basketball **

  • Driving through downtown Miami on Sunday taking in sights before a flight and was at stop light next to American Airlines Arena. NBA playoffs: Heat vs. Celtics Game 1. It was about three hours before tipoff and the big, flashing sign told the story: TICKETS AVAILABLE.

  • You got that right Darrell.

  • Miami is currently and has always been just a god awful sports town period....and that sign pretty much proves the point.

No professional or college sport in that town draws anything. Think the Dolphins had 10-15,000 unsold tickets at their last home playoff game.

When the Marlins won their last World Series in 03 they did a survey of people at the opening game and the vast majority had NEVER been to a single game previous to that.

Of course if the Heat make the Finals then the South Beach bandwagoners will try to glom on at the last minute....just as the did for the Marlins and the Panthers when they got to the championship.

And when its over....there gone, never to be seen again.

  • How much were the tickets ? The economy is going to drive down everything the way things are going................Whats not to like about the NBA? All the players have skills, most have athleticism . It is a better basketball game than a college game where clucks and weird officiating are consistent. Many college basketball games look like glorified high school games sometimes----slapping , pushing , 17 straight trips without a score. When teams have players that have NBA talent , then they sure are a lot more fun to watch, which is why the NBA is fun to watch. Good play and extremely good skill make for a better product to be spectated...............and the Kentucky Colonels were a frickin blast !

That's amazing. As big as that series is, just nuts. I guess Miami offers other distractions. biggrin

I'll say this for the actual games, though, the level of play has been tremendous. You watch these guys play, then think back to the NCAA tournament, and you can see how bad the college game is hurting for developed talent.

  • This is definitely a Miami thing and not an NBA thing. Heck, the Marlins have one of the best records in baseball right now and I think there are more people in the dugouts than there are in the stands.

Watch one of the upcoming games in Oklahoma City. It feels like you're watching a game at one of the loudest, most raucous college arenas.

  • This OKC team reminds me a little of those Portland (the ones with Rasheed Wallace) teams a few years back. (neither an beat the Lakers in the pkayoffs lol) that team was really fun to watch but what makes OKC remind of them are the crowds. Back then, those crowds in Portland were C R A Z Y!!
That OKC team is fun fun fun to watch. I don't remember Westbrook being nearly this good in college. That kid litaerallu tries to dunk on everybody. Durant is just smooth. And now they are putting some real pieces together with Hardin, perk, and so on. If the front offices can hold it together, the people of OK City with hbe something to cheer about for some time.

    agreed

Go to an Auburn, Ole Miss, etc, for a basketball game that does not involve UK and you will see a lot of empty seats. I remember how Florida was back to back champs and the year after that they could not sell out their small but nice arena. They averaged something like 90% capacity if I can remember correctly, the numbers were in the Cats Pause. I wonder what they average now? Or, what it looks like when they are playing Fla. A&M on a Tuesday?

You would not see that sign in Boston, Chicago, LA, or many of the cities you all just mentioned. As Jeff said, "Too many distractions."

Even when "the U" are national contenders in fooball they cannot sell out games. Who'd a thunk, "the U" would be outsold by UK in football? Well... we would, but not anyone else you'd ask. Great true and false trivia question. Now if we could only have thier talent base. Sorry got distracted.
