$100,000,000 expansion to Commonwealth set for 2014

  • The McGraw-Hill Construction network is now reporting a $100,000,000 expansion to Commonwealth. To be completed by 2014. It includes a new upper level press box. New lighting. sideline Luxury suites. It also includes a community event area with catering services and 4 additional boxes in the endzone. Project is listed in the pre-panning stage. It states that no architect will be selected until Financing is approved.
    You can take it for what it's worh.

  • Market, market, market, market. That is what UK needs to do in order to get these types of projects from a general concept to something more realistic. They need to get artist renderings (good ones, too, not just some stupid photoshop bullsh*t like they did with the new video boards and ribbon boards last year) out there to the public, start a marketing campaign for private donations to be made directly to fund the project, etc. MARKETING!!! Until then, random companies and groups can tout a "plan" and say it will move forward once funding is approved all they want, but that doesn't move the ball an inch closer to getting it done.

  • I wonder what the bid date is on it. If it is subsequent to Williams' statements about bonding and support, is this Mitch calling Williams' bluff on supporting Commonwealth expansion? Step 1 is obtain a detailed plan; Step 2 is demonstrating the potential revenue stream; Step 3 is holding Williams' feet to the fire re: supporting the bonding request.

  • I hope to get some more info on this potential expansion ASAP, but I don't know if the timing could be any worse to present this to the Legislature.

    With season ticket sales reportedly down, there is a pretty high likelihood that decreased ticket revenue will be used to block any potential funding that we may be counting on from the Legislature or state.

    How utterly ironic it will be if the fans who choose to "support" their team by refusing to attend games after a 5-7 (2-6) season that ended the UT streak end up being used as an example that inhibits this expansion.

  • Fan support is not an argument to limit expansion. If there is a team worth watching UK fans have clearly shown that they will come in droves. You don't rank in the top 25 in attendance for decades and in the face of much below average football without having rabid fans.

    I would argue that ticket revenue is an argument to limit expansion, or renovation, if you prefer that term.

    All we've heard recently is that the revenue streams to service any bonding is what will ultimately drive the Legislature to allow the bonding to happen.

    What happens to your revenue stream when ticket sales decline? Revenue projected for suites and other added amenities has to fill a gap in ticket sales. Meaning that the projected additional revenue has a slice coming off of the top to fill the gap in declining ticket sales, rather than being strictly dedicated to servicing debt. Suddenly, things (read: revenues) look more tenuous and give an excuse (to a body likely looking for any excuse) to nix the deal.

    Of course, UK may not be counting on bonding and may have another plan to finance the expanovation.

    Your point about the top 25 attendance for decades perfectly illustrates my point, if ticket sales drop as precipitously as many are predicting (hoping?) for this season.

    Williams: "Eli, I see your plan here shows a lot of anticipated revenue. What happens when Joker/Leach/Tomlin/Bryant loses too many games in 2019? I see here that a couple of bad seasons caused ticket sales to drop X% and millions in revenue were lost."

    Eli: "..."

    Williams: "Wrap it up boys, can't have my constituency on the hook for all that cash when these fans don't show up."

    Yep. Same ones will also complain about the recruiting when there's daily topics about replacements for the head coach.

  • baby steps are better than no steps. I'll be shocked if it's done by 2014 though. That would be a quick construction job considering the slow moving legislature and redtape.

    To do what is being shown here would not take very long to finish...
    9 to 12 mo tops.

    All things being said. UK has always had a big crowd at CW even in the horrid yrs. ( most yrs )
    So filling CW with teams that could go to bowl games will be easy.

    The thing is I would love to have a stadium that makes you say wow. You don't have to spend a ton of money to make CW like that. Adding a ton of seats will neaver be the ans. Makeing it more fun to attend is the ans. Even if UK looses the game just going to watch them was fun to do. That is the ans.
    Adding the best that we could add to bring in more recruits should be the main thing to do.
    Say recruiting rooms, things like that.

  • Come on Jeff, your right but it's understandable. Maybe if Joker puts exciting football on the field then we can discuss the naysayers. The brand of football Joker puts on the field hurts recruiting, not a fan base or national media that knows its win or else.
