1996 UK championship team talks 2012 squad, who would win

The 1996 and 2012 Kentucky basketball teams each won NCAA championships in dominant fashion, but who would win if they played in their prime? The 1996 squad has an idea.

  • Which team do you think would win, Matt? What about everyone else?

I think 96 would win personally. While I believe Anthony Davis and MKG are better than anyone 96 had individually, the 96 squad was still a better team. They didn't just beat you back then, they undressed you and left you with nothing positive to talk about after the game in the locker room. I think 1st half would be close but 96 wears down Teague and Lamb in second half with constant pressure via the press. I don't think Anthony Davis has enough offensive versatility yet to be a big factor offensively, I mean they shut down Tim Duncan for goodness sake. MKG and T Jones would have to have monster games I think but it would be so hard with 96 team sending wave after wave of fresh legs at them. If they played 10 times I think 96 wins 7, 2012 Cats wins 3 games. My take on it.

  • Hard to disagree with Sham. But the thing is, the 2012 stars were FRESHMEN!

I think the '96 guys were pretty much spot on with their assessment. The one thing this year's team didn't have much of was depth. But there would have been some fascinating matchups: Walker/Jones, MKG/Mercer/Anderson, Delk/Lamb, etc.

Great point. If we could have seen 2012 group as upperclassmen that's the best team potentially in college basketball history. Senior Jones and Lamb with Junior Teague, MKG, Davis, and Wiltjer would be unstoppable.

  • I pretty much have to agree with everyone else and say the 96 team would win because of their depth. I can remember that year that several teams that year were still in the game till about the 8 minute mark of the second half then the game long pressure coupled with fresher legs because of the great bench you could see the other teams gas tank hit empty then the lead would balloon out to 20+ points. As great as the 2012 team was their lack of a bench would have been their undoing.

  • PS. I hate to say this but if in 97 Anderson had been healthy Pitino and KY would have had 2 in a row. Sorry but I had to get that off my chest, I have been holding off saying that since the game.

  • 96 wins going away. They are just as talented at every position (minus Ant) and go deeper, way deeper. the 96 team was on a mission every game to embarras folks and it showed (Remember the 86 pts they hung on a good LSU team in the first half?). Not to mention the experience that 96 would bring to the table with all the major contributors being upperclassmen (Minus Mercer who was a frosh).
2012 is a GREAT team, but not quite ready for 96 level, if 2012 had a few years together, they would challenge if not outright beat 96 but not yet. GBB!!!

  • '96 team would have made sure that 2012's lack of depth came back to bit em because they would have ran them to death. Although at the same time they'd play right in 2012's strengths. Man its a tough call. Still I think '96 would win especially if Delk got hot from the outside.

  • Sounds like a landslide for 96 squad.

  • Similar talent but the depth of the 96 squad would win out IMO.

  • Where Davis was so dominant on the defensive end, I don't think he would have been that much of a factor against the 96 team. The 96 bigs, McCarty and Pope, did most of there damage outside, so, they would have pulled him out on the court. Once they did that, Walker would have been one on one inside with Jones and imo, that would have been a mismatch. I think Epps and Teague basically offset each other, especially when you could put Turner in to spell Epps and keep alot of pressure on Teague, just getting the ball down the court. MKG is bigger and stronger than either Anderson or Mercer, but, both those guys were so athletic that they'd really make him work so hard on the defensive end, it would probably hinder his offensive output. Delk would likely get the better of Lamb. Both are great shooters, but, Delk's a little more athletic and his long arms would make it a little tougher on Lamb to get his shots off. Miller, as a 6th man vs Mercer, as a 6th man, isn't all that close. mercer was a freakish athlete. Miller is a better outside shooter, but, other than that, mercer has the advantage.
