2006 all over again? The optimist in me

  • I remeber leaving the game at Louisville in 06 talking about who our next coach would be. We lost 56-28 and were down 49-7 at one point. Our defense looked beyond miserable. Our offense really didn't sustain a drive, we hit a couple of big plays but our running game was non existent.

Fast forward to yesterday. I'm reality, we were in the game through 3 quarters and could have made it competitive had we not shot ourselves in the foot.

Our schedule likely sets up a bit better than 06, if isn't what they were in 06 and uscjr doesn't look to be world beaters either. Mizzou is a "winnable game" along with vandy.

If our defense somehow becomes "serviceable" we could see an 06 situation setup again. Maxwell smith is just a soph but he looked better than mike Hartland or Woodson did in their junior years and our o-line was pretty solid protecting and in run blocking. The Louisville d-line looked like they were on roller skates at times yesterday.

I still have major doubts about the defense but I also don't think we'll see a qb as good as bridge water til the uga game. However, we will see better defenses.

Please don't flame with hyperbole in this thread. I want serious feedback. As of right now im predicting 4/5 wins if the defense doesn't improve. But if they at least become serviceable I can see 6 as a long shot possibility.

  • 6 wins is a possibility, but it just became a lot harder. In 2006, we beat Ole Miss, Miss State, Georgia, and Vandy to go to 4-4 in the SEC. We also played USC and Tennessee very close, and should've won one of those two. We do not have the luxury of Ole Miss this season. Miss State, Georgia, and even Vandy are all significantly better than they were in 2006. It would be quite a challenge to win those games. Tennessee is right about the same, perhaps a little worse, as they finished 9-3 in 06.

Our offense was improved yesterday, no doubt about it. But, I do think it will be difficult to run the ball as well as we did yesterday against the SEC when we were exclusively out of the gun. Woodson became one of the best QB's in the country that year with a 31:7 ratio, 63% completion, and 3000+ yards. We had several NFL weapons in Burton, Tamme, Little, and Lyons. While it is possible, I don't think this years offense can match 2006 quite yet. The good news is, surely this defense can do better than the defense that year, which was ranked 117th IIRC.

Sure Wins (I don't care what smart ass remarks people have, we will win these games):
    Kent
    WKU
    Samford

    Possible:
    Miss State
    Vandy
    Missouri
    Tennessee
Arkansas (losing Petrino will make a BIG difference, IMO)

    Unlikely:
    Florida
    Georgia
    USC

So, yes, it is doable. But we gotta get better in a hurry defensively.

  • Sure hope you're right, hop. Although I have to question whether UK's talent level on defense is anywhere close to the 2006 team. That 2006 team had some talented young DL, a great LB in Woodyard, a good CB in Lindley, and a solid safety in McClinton. I'm afraid that UK just hasn't been able to sign the same caliber of talent on that side of the ball. That said, a lot of our current defensive players are very young, so maybe we will see more talent shine through as the season progresses.

Also, to the poster above counting WKU as a sure win, it won't be if UK's defense plays like it did yesterday. Not a smart ass comment, but I follow both teams pretty closely. UK should win, but the talent level on the rosters is closer than you might think, and WKU features an offense similar to what UofL ran yesterday (big difference being no Bridgewater for WKU).

  • If you think UK was still in that game yesterday after 3 quarters you need to watch the tape. UL was averaging about 10 yrds a pop and pulled their starters before the third quarter was over. UK did pass the ball around but when we tried to run the ball up the gut with our small backs we coughed it up twice near the goal line. We were done early in the 3rd quarter and frankly if they hadn't let up it would have been 50-7. Now we can possibly play much better but outside of Smith and Collins I didn't see anything positive in yesterday's game. Kent state will go down but I am worried about WKU.

Na. As usual you are taking a worse case scenario look. Uofl played nearly flawlessly. If the officials make the correct call ad say Williams was down (he was) we score there and it's a game. Again, we wouldn't have won but it could have been much closer.

Our defense was as bad as it could be and Louisville played perfect yet we were
Still on the game in the 3rd quarter even though we had a missed field goal that we make 8-10 times and going In for another score.

  • Is it going to continue to be common to have VIP posts listed in general discussion threads?

There's a known issue with future posts being unnecessarily flagged as VIP when a VIP post is made, yet nearly every thread on the front page has Fisher or the new guy inserting a VIP post into a thread discussing opinions on (for example) whether this season could turn out like 2006 or not.

I don't see how any opinion of staff on this topic could possibly warrant a VIP-only response. Recruiting threads, sure. Coaching staff interviews, ok. Threads on what Dy'shawn Mobely tweeted or wanting to discuss thoughts on the season outcome is getting out there, in my opinion.

Yeah. I deleted my VIP account, and honestly, if this continues, I'll fully delete my account. What's the point if even threads about the weather get turned into VIP threads?

  • Yeah, I'm not trying to complain either, but it does seem a little strange to have all those gaps in regular topic discussions... Oh well, not a huge deal, just sayin

  • I agree with these guys. It's obvious that the staff is trying to make it so that one has to be premium to get any information at all. I don't like that.

No offense, but the end score is not very indicative of how far apart we were. And I say that because it could've been a heck of a lot worse had Strong left Bridgewater in. We started making up ground about the time Stein came in because it allowed our offense to get back on the field.

Williams fumbled with eleven minutes to go in the fourth; Bridgewater was already taking an ice bath at the time.

The fumble on the 19 yard line happened with 18 seconds left in the 3rd. Bridgewater was out.

More specifically look at UofL's drive chart:

    LOU 1st L01 11:32 Punt K00 03:11 * TOUCHDOWN 15-99 8:21
    LOU 2nd L15 13:42 Kickoff K00 11:03 * TOUCHDOWN 6-85 2:39
    LOU 2nd L07 10:12 Punt K00 04:17 * TOUCHDOWN 10-93 5:55
    LOU 2nd L22 03:15 Fumble K44 00:27 Punt 6-34 2:48
    LOU 3rd L24 12:38 Missed FG K05 08:19 * FIELD GOAL 11-71 4:19
    LOU 3rd K38 06:30 Downs K00 04:37 * TOUCHDOWN 6-38 1:53
    LOU 3rd L25 02:43 Kickoff L40 00:18 Punt 6-15 2:25
    LOU 4th L03 11:44 Fumble L08 09:45 Punt 3-5 1:59
    LOU 4th L12 07:41 Downs L41 03:03 Punt 8-29 4:38
    LOU 4th K41 01:24 Downs L48 00:00 End of half 2--11 1:24

The scoring slowed significantly when Will Stein came in, allowing us to make up ground. Otherwise, even without the late turnovers we would have just been trading scores at the most. You all can down vote my post all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that Strong could've put his foot on the gas and made it much worse had Bridgewater not been pulled. We flat out didn't have an answer for him.

Belle, not arguing that this game was over when Bridgewater was taken out, but you are wrong about the fumble at the 19. That occured with 3:15 left in the 1st half. We were driving to cut it to 1 score. I just checked it on the replay. Had we gotten in before the half, there was a chance to keep making a game of it. If we had, I doubt TB comes out and we probably lose anyway, but just wanted to clarify that.

  • I think Joker is going to have to pull out all of the stops starting next week..that means play Mobley a lot, play Demarius Rancifer at linebacker..He could not be worse than
what we saw sunday..Throw some crossing routes and lets see a bit more play action..Put the freshmen wide receivers in and throw the damn ball to them..Joker's job is
on the line..I hope he wakes up before its too late..

    wildcatdon

  • 1. I mean really if Demarius Rancifer was as good as Brause or McDuffen he'd be playing. If anything we might have to throw Henderson in the mix. Rancifer has been here long enough to make an impression on the coaches. If Brause has good instincts like I've heard but isn't a great athlete then we need to put him in a position to use those instincts not chasing the QB.

    2. How does the timing of the fumble have anything to do with whether or not Bridgewater was in the game? Last I checked he plays QB. The point is we made some mental mistakes. Take those out and we score 10-17 more points.

    3. You say this could be a repeat of 2006 yet you predict 6 wins. We won 7 that year and Louisville was an Orange Bowl team in 2006 in at least a respectable Big East. Plus the SEC schedule looks a little tougher than we faced that year. Clearly Miss St. and Vandy are better. UGA looks like a tough win at this point and UT is lots better than last year.

    4. I still think we can improve quite a bit. We just don't have time to wait. Its gotta be immediate and all the coaches need to put their heads together to come up with a plan that might help this defense. That or Max and Co. need to get it going really fast. We've gotta be more aggressive on O. I'm not complaining about the playcalling or trying to say we were vanilla but we've got to be more aggressive and at the same time not commit turnovers.

Vandy was decent that year (and played a tougher OOC schedule) and I think they'll be on par with their team this year. They beat a Top 20 UGA team on the road, lost by a touchdown to UF, lost by a FG to 'Bama and Arkansas.
