2013 Football Expectations.

  • The whirlwind that has been UK football recruiting rages on. I cant remember a more exciting time surrounding our football program in my lifetime. No question..Mark Stoops and the staff he and Mitch B has assembeld can flat out recruit. At long last everyone associated with Uk football and athletics have made a strong commitment to having a competitive, successfull football program.
In a little over a month Stoops, Eliot,Brown,Marrow, Scott, Brumbaugh, Schlarman have taken Uk's football class from the 70's into the 40's. It is only going to get better. I think its safe to say Mark Stoops 1st class at UK will be the best in memory..mabye ever.

NO doubt in my mind, come next August, UK football will be much more talented than the squad we watched in 2012. NO doubt Uk will be better coached, better prepared, playing with more fire and emotion than the passive, meek-ish squads Joker fielded.(No offense to Joker..he was just too mild for a HC.) And, sadly..No doubt that the schedule Uk faces in 2013 will be by far a much tougher one than we played in 2012. Our 2013 slate is horribly, terribly, (all those ively's) tough. Louisville throttled Florida in the Gators backyard...wasnt even competitive..and the Cards will be better next year. WKU thinks they are better than UK, beat us last year..and Petrino will pull no stops in an attempt to throw dirt in our eyes. Then comes the hard part..Gators,Bama,SCjr, Ga. Vandy is better, Mizzou, Miss ST is a team on the rise.

With all the excitment surrounding our football team right now..it will be easy to expect too much of our young team in terms of wins and losses next year. WE, the BBN..the fans..have to get 100% behind this staff..and STAY behind them. WE will be young again. With arguably the nation's toughest schedule..IF Stoops somehow finds a way to get 6 wins and a bowl berth..we should be estatic!! 6 wins from our 2013 slate of games would be huge. That said..we shouldnt get upset if we come up short of a bowl berth..4 or 5 wins. AS long as we play inspired, dont quit, battle on every snap, we should be happy with our 2013 squad. If we show up in force and fill Commonwealth next fall..give our young team the support and home field advantage..all will be well. If we give up on our team and have crowds of 30,000..then we the fans will have let down our team.

THis staff has proven they can recruit..they will bring in better talent. WE the fans need to be patient..temper our expectations (me more than most..being the overly optimitic one!). If we stay behind our coaches and team..I truly think big things are on the horizon for UK football. 2014 and especially 2015 could be historic years for UK football. WE will be getting better, more experienced, while the rest of the SEC will be reloading. If Stoops and company continue to kill it on the recruiting trail..the teams we see on the field in 2014 and 2015 wont even resemble the squads of the past 2 years at all. When Stoops recruits get to be sophomores and juniors..Uk will be lightyears ahead of our past teams in terms of talent.
It will be so nice to see College Gameday in Lexington, going to SEC Championship games occasionally, and BCS bowls. IM glad that I could be here and share in all the fun and excitment with you all..The BBN..my extended family. Love all of yas..even the ones that hate on me..LoL..Cant wait for Kickoff under the Stoops era!!

  • Good post. I don't know what kind a record to expect that would be fair to stoops right off the bat, but I expect something more than whimpering and whining this year.

Agreed Tacos!! No way to put a over/under on next year thats fair. As long as we play hard..and dont back down. I see us losing a game we shouldnt, and winning a couple we shouldnt. Im going out on a limb and saying Stoops and the improved defense will get 6 wins..7 if we beat UofL and win all 4 non-SEC games. I think we win 3 SEC games..a big upset and Mizzou, UT. I think this would be HUGE..and would keep the momentum Stoops has built going on and he nets a huge 2014 recruiting class..thanks for the up vote btw..will return the favor when my votes get refreshed!!

Let me start by saying good post. With that said lets temper expectations of record years in '14 and '15. I really hope I eat crow there, but let's remember building a football team takes more time than other sports. We need to build quality depth at all positions. That takes time.

Look at how long it took South Carolina with Holtz and Spurrier. Don't be surprised if it takes us a little longer than 3 years. I would be ecstatic with being competive next year and bowling the next two. That would be a major win for 3 seasons IMO. In the SEC I would be happy with going to a New Year's day bowl in year 5-6. After that we might see more.

I love the way this staff is starting off on the trail. If they continue that and produce on the field then this is the staff to FINALLY turn things around!

Yep. If UK gets to 5 wins this year, that would be great. This upcoming senior class for UK is not very talented (had the least amount of total games played this past season). Only Avery Williamson has a chance to make it in the NFL and he'll probably go undrafted. However, the current freshmen and sophomore classes got a lot of playing time, so we will see in a couple years, some winning football.

  • Wins and losses are going to be a very hard metric to demonstrate progress BUT I do think that the Cats have a shot for as many as 6 wins but 4-5 are more likely. Not to get geeky, here is what I think we'll see. An offense that has been mired at near the very BOTTOM of the NCAA (Avg about 15 -17 pts a game each year) will move at least to the middle of the pack putting up somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-27 pts a game. Similarly, I'd expect the D to come off an abysmal year of allowing over 31 pts a game to somewhere around the mid 20's (something they've done in the recent past). I base this improvement on the track records of Brown as an OC at TTech and Stoops tenure as Florida St. DC.

I think one intangible the 2013 Cats have is that they will not have a lot of pressure or high expectations on them as everyone sees this for what it is, a progam that is in flux w/a new staff in its 1st year of rebuilding. However, there is a ton of excitement and enthusiasm for the program which should generate some additional buzz at home games which is a huge plus. Unfortunately for Stoops, UK has one of the toughest slates in the country this year w/the addition of Bama and the Dirty Birds being a legit top 20 club as one of the OOC games. Bottom line is I think we'll see a much more competitive squad w/significant improvement on both sides of the ball and an upset or two very likely!

  • UK has a killer schedule...

    Who will the QB be...?

Zero expectations for 2013. Anything more would be very unfair.

They are really the only metric. Aren't losses what got Joker fired? I'm not expecting anything this coming season, but after that there needs to be an upward trend till beyond 500.

For 2013 I disagree. Now if they go 0-12 that may be some cause for concern (don't really think that will happen) but short of that, I don't think that wins/losses are going to be the measuring stick for progress. Being competitive, improving offensively and defensively in tangible ways are more of what should be looked at (from my perspective). I agree that AFTER 2013, there needs to be signs of progression in the W/L column.

  • Wins and losses are the only metric if you don't know anything about football.

    TacosMcGee

  • I may be overly optimistic but I can UK really turning some heads next year with a 5-6 win season. With that number of wins we will have to upset someone maybe even two teams next year. I can see us beating those who we are "supposed" to beat (including WKU) and maybe upsetting Vandy, Miss State, and possibly Mizzou. Either way all I want to see next year is some sort of improvement from the coaching staff. If someone is throttling us in the first half then I want to see some sort of adjustment being made instead of desperation moves.

I think Stoops and Co. will bring some needed excitement to the program and with the renovation to CWS I think that momentum will transfer into wins on the football field. We fans need to stay behind these players next year, like OP said, and if we continue to show our support to these players then other big time recruits will follow suite. I cannot wait till the Spring Game because I am going to do whatever I can to get myself there.

A down vote for this? C'mon guys..ups for everyone that responded. I have a hater out there. I got no less than 18 up votes..yesterday..and im going backwards by a point. Hate to whine about it guys..but wth? I never bash or put anyone down. Never. To whomever i have unknowingly offended..I apologize..I should have the right to be optimistic about my football team. If you call yourself a Uk football fan and are not giddy right now you should check your pulse. I love every single member of the BBN..you guys and gals are my extended family. Please overlook my over zealousness fromtime to time. I spend every single up vote Im allowed daily..and id bet ive given less than 10 down votes in the 13 months ive been a 247 subscriber.

  • I never pay any attention to up or down votes on any post. Don't even really know why they're there. Is it a self esteem thing or what?

  • my expectations are not to be 4 TD underdogs at home or road. That spread is in the pure no respect category and you might as well be fielding a Jamaican bobsled team.

Heard that adolph!! Im happy as long as we fight..tooth and nail..from whistle to whistle. I think we can safely say those days are behind us. Lets hope for good!!

  • I realistically only see 3 to 5 wins for next season. I can live with that given the circumstances that the new staff has inherited.

Thats what I thought until Stoops started flexing his muscles on the recruiting trail. Now I see possibly a bowl game. We're gonna bring in some serious ballers before all is said and done and this staff is for real.

  • If we get Kemp timmons and and Gibson to go with Yancey Blue Robinson Sweat Legree Collins and say a kid like Badet. I can see this offense being good enough to win 3 games in conference and 3 ooc.
