A buddy asked me very intersting question

  • yesterday regarding coach Mitchell...

How long does he stay at UK?

I could see a guy like coach Mitchell staying put and building a power program here if he were to continue his success, but would he leave if another school came calling? IMO, there are a few jobs he would leave UK for, maybe Ole Miss or Miss St. given that's his home. There is also that school just a couple of hours south of here that is going to have to look to the future sooner than later. Would UT look at coach Mitchell, and if so, would he leave UK for one if the premier jobs in women's hoops?

    Curious to read your thoughts.

  • We have been wondering the same thing. I would think unless its one of the big programs, I think he stays. Seems to really enjoy being in Lexington.

  • Here are three scenarios in my mind....the last being far fetched, maybe?

    1. He stays and builds a power house at UK.
    2. He goes to UT after Summit retires.

    ......and......

    3. He stays and takes over the men when Cal moves on in 6-8 years!! How's that for out of the box thinking!!!!

He won't get the job at UT straight away that will likely go to Holly Warlick since she's effectively coaching the team right now in games.

  • I could really see coach staying here in Lex Vegas and building a real power. There are several advantages in staying at UK.
1.) He has a great relationship with Cal. There are very few women's programs that also have elite men's programs as well.
2.) Great facilities, which again gets a tremendous boost from the men's program.
3.) The BBN. With the unmatched passion of UK's absolutely CRAZY fan base, I think coach knows (or should) that if he can win at the highest level he could potentially have one of the very best fan bases in women's hoops.

There are also a strong variables in him leaving.
1.) Same reason as #1 on the "pros to staying list" at a school like UT, if he were to maintain the Vol's winning tradition he would be top dawg. At UK mens basketball would always reign supreme. However, the pressure at a school like that would be nuts.
2.) Lets face it, UT is to women's hoops what UK is to men's.
3.) $$$. He could potentially make a lot more money at another school where women's basketball is bigger than the men's program as far as winning.

I think only one thing is certain, if he keeps this up its only a matter of time before he is faced with making this decision.

  • Why would he leave?

Facilities? He has Memorial and he has Rupp if needed, so no...

Money? UK will pay him whatever other schools would and have already demonstrated so.

Chance to win it all? Does anyone really think that can't be done at UK based on what he's building?

So, what's left? Why would he feel the need to go anywhere?

That's not only "out of the box thinking.....it's crazy talk. The distance between coaching Men's and Women's big time basketball is the distance between here and Uranus. If it "Could" be done...and if it were to be done...don't you think someone would have swooped up the UCONN coach by now?

    Twill never happen....and it shouildn't.

  • Oddly enough...I was out one night with the head coach of a top 25 women's program a couple years back (random night I know) and the conversation shifted to how big of a dud hire Matthew Mitchell was at the time.

    How things have changed ...

  • One positive to keeping Mitchell in KY that has not been mentioned is the instate talent for recruitiing.

Unlike men's BB or FB, isn't girls high school hoops fairly strong in KY yielding a strong recruiting base?

Normally KY produces 1-2 top tier girls every single year. The thing is other than Mathies and to a lesser extent Drake UK really hasn't cashed in on it in a while. Becca Greenwell could certainly change that in a HUGE way next year if we can win the dog fight for her.

KY has actually been on an uptick lately in producing talent. Sydney Moss (Randy's daughter) is headed to Florida, Sarah Hammond chose UL over UConn, and then you have Makayla Epps and Kyvin Goodin-Rogers (Anthony and Tics daughters) both heading to UL next year. Greenwell is probably going to be better than all those and may be better than Mathies if she can come back from her knee ok. She is a HUGE recruit that we're going against every major power in the country for.

  • If you have watched any of Tennessee's games lately, you can see that Summitt makes less and less moves/decisions during the game then ever before. She was the Adolph Rupp of women's basketball and with her condition, I am afraid she is not the coach she was. And when did Tennessee ever get beat like 72-44 in her career? I am just saying that replacing this woman will be a HUGE job for any coach and like Mitchell, I wouldn't want to be the first to try it. I hope he makes the right decision and makes his own legendary program for himself here at UK.

I don't know if it was lip service or not but Matthew has said before you don't want to be the one to replace a legendary coach because it rarely works. That would obviously be the case at Tennessee.

Its interesting though that there were a lot of people none too happy when Mitch ponied up to keep Mitchell. He knew it was a pre-emotive strike and effort to show the coach they were serious about being a power here. He may also have to do it again and I wonder if the reaction will be different?

Good points. Following Summit is going to be really tough for anyone to handle.

Plus, he's got great support from the administration for success at UK. I can kind of see him settling in like Billy Donovan did at Florida.

  • UK WILL PAY THIS MAN WHATEVER HE WANTS!!! HE LOVES IT HERE HE CAN MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF HERE, AND HAS VERY LITTLE PRESSURE ON HIM.

HE HAS ALL HE NEEDS TO BUILD A SUPER POWER.
    1)UK'S NAME
    2)MONEY
