About that talk we had about Vandy the other day...

  • Commitments are one thing; signings are another.

  • I had been wondering for a long time how Vandy got that kid in the first place. Ideally you'd want a slightly taller LB, but that kid is literally built like a brick ish house.

No Jeff that just can't be right because Vandy has completely surpassed us in every faucet of the game...because they beat us last year...just ask the LOD, they will tell ya

  • In college football rankings mean nothing until after everybody is signed and even then if guys don't qualify they can be meaningless, if teams don't get wins they can be meaningless. I won't hype Strong or Franklin until they prove it on the field which neither has done at this point.

  • what? but how could the almighty Franklin lose a commitment? Does this kid not realize Franklin = the next Saban? rofl.

  • Since Franklin doesn't hire coaches unless he meets their wifes, maybe he doesn't sign kids unless the mother qualifies as a hottie. lol

  • The funniest thing about this Franklin business is that his career path is almost exactly like Joker Phillips with the exception he got paid to "go away" instead of getting the Maryland job (as he was contractually designated the HCIW) so they could hire the proverbial "big name"

I feel sorry for Phillips in a way. He should have jumped after 07 and gotten a job somewhere else. I'm afraid the graveyard is going to claim another one soon.

  • [I was listening to Larry Glover live and they were saying the head coach stuck his foot in his mouth about who he hires is dependent on the coaches wife who has to be hot, or he will not hire him. sick]

He definitely said that. Could hurt him on the recruiting trail. "Sir your recruiting my kid, is my wife or his mother hot enough for ya."

  • Franklin may be a doofus for all I know but everyone outside of Kentucky feels he is a building at Vandy and there is no question they embarrassed UK last year on the field. As to commitments switching programs, that is clearly not good but it at least shows that high quality prospects respect your program enough to make a public commitment to it even if they later change their minds. I think the lack of commitments to UKFB is starting to look bad even if they are being more selective and have a limited number of rides to offer.

  • the kids that are considering Vandy today are a higher caliber of prospect that has EVER considered or signed with Vandy. Vandy has offered "a great education" for 50+ years, yet none of the kids in the South wanted anything to do with them. Now, one coach and one staff has changed all of that. Simply can't be denied.

  • I agree with JDrum, but Vandy is very unique to the SEC. . not only do they have the top tier education, but they have Nashville. Nashville is much different than traditional SEC towns.

I am completely digressing, but I think Lexington could make a move up nationally (but do we really want it to though?) Austin used to be a sleepy town in TX. . now look at it. Nashville was the same way a few years ago. I could see Lexington becoming a trendy choice at some point. Heaven help us all! :-)

  • Maybe Nigel's girlfriend wasn't hot enough for Franklin to keep the commitment.

Lexington is trying. There have been forces at work for years who have tried to keep it from happening, but the city finally has some forward-thinking leadership. I've heard they see Austin as a nice model of what can be done.

  • Horrible take. Joker doesn't take commitments unless the kid is positive he wants to come here and they have a good relationship. You'd prefer to take any commitment even if it isn't sincere? Too each their own. I have no problem with our lack of commitments at this point.

It's funny if joker had 5 right now fans would complain he has too many and isn't selective enough. SMH!

This is incorrect. No-one is "defending our program to the likes of Vandy."

Numerous posters have pointed to the "success" of Vanderbilt and Franklin recently. JDrum (and other posters) are merely presenting the other side of the equation.

Nobody is defending anything, merely pointing out the other side of a one-sided narrative. If you meant "comparing" our program to Vanderbilt, that comparison is in response to the assertion by some that Vanderbilt has shot past us based upon last year's win and recent recruiting.

  • Just to throw in a few numbers from rivals. There are 167 commitments to 14 SEC football programs so the average number is just at 12 as of today. UK is not alone by being in single digits. MSU has 2, Ark has 6, UT has 8, and Vandy has 9. The numbers don't mean UK won't have a great class by the time it is all over in February but I also don't believe they are insignificant.

Step one would be to make sure the next Michael Dell is born in the vicinity.

Nashville has always been a great town--lots of culture, lots of money, plus one of the epicenters of black culture in America. But after that particular city, I don't see one SEC town having anything over any other. Lex and Knoxville are the semi-urban areas. Oxford, Athens, and Baton Rouge are within striking distance of cultural centers, but most of the SEC is in Podunk. I just don't think it's a relevant factor in recruiting.

I don't think it's crucial to all programs, but I think it's important to UK. This program, like Vandy needs extra advantages to close the tradition gap that those SEC powers playing in otherwise small towns own.

Increasingly, I've heard kids mention that they were surprised that Lexington was a "nice city," stuff like that. They envision Lexington as one of those "Podunk" places before they get here.

  • Supposedly the 4 star linebacker, recommitted to Vandy today.

    TNCatfanforever

  • Franklin, who cares about Vandy, but the fact his name is even mentioned on a UK board really says everything about the overall UK football program. We are now worried who "Vandy" signs and their commitment list but UK has (1) commitment and that is a Kentucky kid.

Everyone reads on here that this recruit has an offer from UK, that this one "likes" UK, and this one is going to camp at UK. All that is good but unless it translates into signings it is as Yogi said, "just deja vu all over again".

The best recruiting news any UK fan has gotten really is that UK is now recruiting in Big 10 country(Ohio) so I will take Jokers word that they (UK) is being selective with its free rides but eventually the rubber hits the road and you have to win football games with the kids you have and not the one's you hope to sign.
