After watching the Louisville game again

  • replay for well,,,,,,,hell I've lost count. Several things stick out to me but I will only point out hte ones that really confuse me.

    1. The delay blitz wasn't working at all! Yet we keep doing it? Bridgewater is a stud and picked up on this the first series as did the UL staff.

    2. As much as I like Williams and Sanders they are NOT and I repeat big time college backs. Both went down and fumbled in plays where any SEC back would have fought through.

    3. Brause and Simpson were like deer in head lights. Niether were as aggressive as I thought. They thought way to much instead of just playing the game.

    4. Ashley Lowery actually played a pretty good game as he had to cover for the above mentioned LB's.

    5. Lastly like I said before I have many thoughts on the game but this one kind of sticks out. The missed calls by the refs were unreal. Is this an excuse? Hell no! Once you see how they are going to call the game you adjust IMO. But to be honest they were terrible, from off-sides, face-mask, Holding, and the miss field goal which was easy to see was good. There were also times when Smith took head shots that weren't called.

In saying that, this is SEC football and that's what refs we had. So adjust, get dirty and kick their ass from now on!

  • IMO UKs defense playing confused and without enough toughness not calls by the officials was the cause of the Cats disaster on defense. It is true there were some strange calls but IMO they pretty much evened out. The truth is neither the UK team or coaching staff were able to figure out what UofL was doing on offense that was confusing them until after the game was out of hand.

Heck I would have welcomed a few unnecessary roughness penaltys against the Cats that showed they at least cared about the outcome of the game and had some pride.

Never said the refs were the cause of the defeat. What I said is you have to adjust to the way they are calling the game. Big Difference.

  • Did u catch the fumbles I was talking about?
Nothing to do with football but go to the beginning of the 4th quater when they are showing the fans before the start of the 4th. They show 2 UK fans with a ul fan setting to thier right (facing the tv)
Watch the ul fans face, we are still laughing at him

  • Our backs played very well sans the fumbles. The first man never took them down and they averaged 8 yards+ a carry collectivelly.

The first fumble is how most fumbles happen. Sanders was fighting for more yards. Sanders looked damn good. He was faster and much quicker.

Williams looked good too catching the ball and running. His fumble actually wasn't a fumble. I slowed it down and his knee was down for at least 3 slow mo frames before the ball came out.

In terms of the defense it boils down to three issues.

    A. The reason uofl ran the ball so well in the first half is simple. They had us outflanked on every play due to is being lost in terms of how to adjust when they changed the strength of their formation. We were lost. In the second half we adjusted and that helped.

    B. our play at will linebacker was awful. This hurt us in the run game and pass game. No more needs to be said

    C. Lastly, uofl passed the ball so well because we were terrible in our Pass
Rush and our young db's. You can't ask young db's to play coverage for 5 seconds.

I am most worried about #3. We have to generate a Padd rush.

  • Uk really hasn't had any type of a pass rush (especially in conference play) since Jarmon's final season. They've had a very tough time recruiting pass rushers for a while now.

  • Wrong.... In 2009 DeQuin Evans finished 7th in the SEC in sacks.

Yeah then in 2010 he did nothing all year.

I agree with Hop on Sanders. I though he looked great. Quicker and faster than I've ever seen him. I think he'll eventually do some damage catching the ball out of the backfield. Maybe the weight he lost helps and the fact that he's healthy. I hope we can keep him healthy. If we can get Sander and Mobley workin as a 1-2 punch our running game will be legit. obviously Coshik can help as well.

  • I thought sanders looked good as well. Great bursts of speed.

Honestly, I think the 2 fumbles came more from great plays by the Louisville defense, putting their nose on the ball, then really anything wrong the rbs did. But yes they still HAVE to protect the ball.

Cobble got PISSED in the second half and really started making some plays, I
Hope that rolls over into the rest of the season.

Defense, face palm. Need lbers to scrape and play downhill and the corners to wake the heck up.

  • I hate to break it to you but their is no good back that fumbles, period. The quickest way for a back to be forgotten on the bench, no matter how good he thinks he is, if he fumbles during a game in critical situations. UK does not run an option offense were fumbles are part of the game. No excuses for fumbling. The going for more yards BS is just that BS. You do not fumble.

This is not pee wee league.

In regards to your B. post - this is what happens when the coaching staff puts a player at that position 2 weeks prior to first game when the player didn't practice or play that position prior to that. Kid went out and did the best he could with that kind of preparation, yet everyone wants to chew him up and spit him out! And some are voting to put the player he was trying to replace back in there. No doubt the kid struggled there. What do you think his comfort zone was with that kind of preparation. At this level you have not time to think. You gotta read the offense and react. Looked like at times he got caught thinking. So is that really his fault with 2 weeks of prep? Others want to say he played soft. It's hard to play aggressive when you are not comfortable with the position. On top of that, there was so much confusion on the plays being called by the ML that were incorrect plays. Go out and read/listen to our ML himself this week. He took it on him and stepped up and said he struggled making the reads and calls.. if the other LB's are getting wrong calls (which some of them knew were wrong) or delayed calls would that not impact your speed, reaction and aggressiveness?! I am not making excuses for either of our WIL LB's. I am just saying I think (IMO) that many are being to rough on them. And do they deserve a chance to redeem themselves. I would say yes, but unfortunately may never get it. And now with a "simplified" defense we plan to go to this week, that would be the time to give them a chance at redemption. Coaches would know early if they can do it. If not, don't go the whole game. Sub in and move on. Doesn't matter my opinion or anyone else other than the coaches. We will see what the young guys can do.

  • And I end with this
"We take a lot of pride in being a team around here and supporting each other," Brause said. "When I was named the starter, (McDuffen) was there for me. It's my turn to be there for him."

Although neither will be the starter today, at least these guys have each other backs and don't sell out on each other out. This says a lot about the type of player these two are. My hope is they both at some point get a chance to redeem themselves because I believe they both would play much improved, more aggressive. It was a first for both of them. And I believe I read where Danny T. didn't start till he was a junior. These two are young.

  • Those two fumbles and the missed field goal made about half of the yardage that UKs offense gained worthless. Ball security is of paramount importance. Turn overs are game killers.

I doubt UK could have won the game because of the way their defense stunk up the field but they IMO should have put 30 plus points on the board if they had maintained ball security and hit that easy FG chance.

Fumbling seems to be a relative problem with the coaching staff. Guys like Gainer and Russell were sent to RB purgatory for fumbling but Williams and Sanders both fumbled at critical times in the game and kept playing. In fact, Sanders is starting this week.

Production in games is more difficult than in practice.

Williams and Sanders have performed well in practice with respect to fumbling. Every back is going to fumble in a game from time to time. Williams and Sanders fumbles in this game are not indicative of something bad.

Gainer and Russell didn't produce in practice, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say they produced fumbles in practice. There is no reason to expect BETTER in a game.

I just don't see any evidence to support the claim that some how Sanders and Williams are getting a better deal than Gainer and Russell.

Interesting.......Adrian Peterson has had trouble fumbling. I guess he's not a good back. Not excusing the fumbles that happened but sometimes people say the darndest things.

  • Louisville had one Or two fumbles. Difference? They recovered their's because they happened close to the Los. Our's Happened way down field and that's why we couldn't recover. I might add, after watching coshik's it actually wasn't a fumble. His knee was down for 3 Frames in my slow mo before the ball came out.

Hoptown you could be right, but I've watched it over and over again and he doesn't look down to me. Either way if the ball never comes out has it shouldn't have we wouldn't be having this conversation.
