Anatomy of a football play

  • As these two pictures show, the game of football is not much different than most team sports. It is all about wining matchups. Picture one shows UK LB being defeated by UofL FB on a simple isolation play.

    Picture two shows UK DE/OLB losing matchup between the pulling guard and fullback. Lose those matchups on plays you learn to defend on day one of camp, and you are in for a long afternoon.

    it was poor technique on both plays. Miles Simpson was likely told on day one of practice that he can NEVER get "reach" blocked as he did on that play. Take the play on with your inside shoulder keeping your outside shoulder free to force the play back inside. Football 101.

    Yep. As the outside guy on a play, you have to maintain that outside leverage in order to force the ball back to your teammates, who should closing to the ball. By the way, that definitely wasn't the only time Simpson got reached.

    Simpson was miserable. If Forrest was have to bet he'd be playing more.

  • Those pictures seem to show that the Cards put more blockers a the point of attack than we could handle. Where were the safeties? Where was the corner in the second play? 5 guys blocking 3 usually works. Part of this is alignment. I am not defending any of these guys' individual performances but we were in the wrong place at the wrong time much of the game.

    That is what is so frustrating. Not once, but all day long our 2nd level was abused

  • It's all about technique and fundamentals deeper than the deepest daylight to dark contain etc. we didn't do any of this except for a few dlineman back to the basics simplify everything and we will be fine the defense can't be lacerated again like it was sunday if so its gonna be a long year for everyone

  • God its so simple too looking at those diagrams. A guy who knows nothing about football could tell you what you need to do. Football is a very simple game. People make it way to hard. And mostly yes its about winning one on one matchups. But you don't have to have unbelievable talent to do it. Its mostly instincts and fundamentals. Obviously you have to be big and strong enough to play but once you are big and strong enough its all about instincts and fundamentals. Those things come with experience but some of it is natural. Really hope we look better fundamentally for the rest of the year. Luckily the UofL game gives us a lot of tape to get better from. I bet guys are kicking themselves over simple mistakes. I just wonder if guys didn't get caught up in the atmosphere and lost focus.

  • By the way where the hell does Ukwu disappear to in that play. He looks to be in perfect position in the first picture and then in the second and third he's nowhere to be found. I was hoping to see a different guy this year in Ukwu. I was hoping that year could be chalked up to injury for him.

    I've never understood the hype of Ukwu with some of you guys. Yes, he looks the part of an SEC DE because of his size. However, his production at that spot has been abysmal thus far in his career. He dealt with some injuries last year, but by and large, he's been a non-factor for UK. Hopefully he makes some big improvements down the stretch.

  • Good catch goldenbear. I was noticing the same thing. It was like he vanished. I think he wasn't even in the play in the latter pictures. I am still hoping for better things from him. I know UL killed us on the edge especially. I didn't tape the game so I don't know if he was in on those plays or not but it definitely needs to be shored up.

    correct. The 1st picture was an isolation play which gained +8 and the second set (2 pics) was a power sweep with fullback and guard leading out on OLB/DE. Both are plays you rep the very first day in camp, beginning in at least 5th grade.

    Pic #1 it's clear that Avery's eyes are in the backfield. They were all game. The Cards don't run alot of Playaction with Teddy. It was a nice wrinkle by their OC as Avery and Brause were frozen all day.

    Pic #2 A closer look shows the fullback as the lead blocker. The second slide shows the pulling guard pinning Simpson inside. Simple defensive logic would tell you that Simpson made the (5th grade) technique hit on the fullback but was turned by the pulling guard while engaged with the fullback..... Question is. Where is the scrape from the ILB? Oh yea. It was play action.

    You guys are too upset to be disecting film. Just enjoy the game.

  • UK was outnumbered at the point of attack most of the game because UK was not compensating for their shift of personel which was allowing them to have more blockers than UK had defenders at the point of attack.

    IMO this was caused by UK having green LBs and a coaching staff that had not prepared their team for such a move. Kudos for the UofL coaching staff they outcoached the UK coaching staff.

  • This shift problem should have been corrected after the first series. It was inexcusable to let this continue the whole game.

    Exactly. We should just enjoy paying thousands of dollars to uk for tickets to see our team get their teeth kicked in by a bunch of sophmores playing for our in-state rival. Just have fun and enjoy the games, folks. Enjoy it. That's what all the other SEC fans do when their teams get humiliated on national tv. Enjoy it.

    Minter's right. What is really needed is more message-board vitriol.

    Every SEC fan knows that the path to progress runs through message-board posts. Watching games is for suckers.
