  • Sorry to read that. Kendrick arrived at UK possessing a whole lot of potential as a pass-catching TE. When he signed with UK, many expected him to eventually put up big numbers catching passes for a few years from Newton and/or Mossakowski. But his playing time and production has been rather limited.

    Hope for his sake he gets is grades in order and eventually gets his degree.

  • Two academically ineligible players this season? The last I can remember was Cobble, and Paul Warford before him.

    With all of the negativity surrounding the program, the news about Caffey and Kendrick just stinks. I know that it's on the players to take advantage of the academic support provided by the program, but I (personally) can't remember the last time UK had two players ineligible in the same season.

    Coach Rock or Coach Jarmon or someone needs to get these kids under a thumb and keep this from happening.

  • I suspect we can find another TE to catch three passes per year. (Total stats-- 6 catches, 45 yards, 0 TD, long of 14 yards in two seasons).

  • Kendrick had not practice much at all and has not been a part of their plans because they had an idea as camp started that this would be the outcome. While you never want to see kids fail on the academic side of things, it's not a major blow on the field. Kendrick has not shown much to suggest he was going to be a big part of their offense.

    As for academic casualties, I don't know, there are 100 guys in that locker room. Things happen. You can do everything in your power as a program to make sure the parts are in place to not have it happen but if a kid either can't or won't do what's necessary, that's on them, IMHO.

    Agree Matt. They have every bit of help UK can give them, tutors for every class, planned study time, but you can only help them so much. At some point they have to take it upon themselves to do the work necessary to stay eligible.

  • Sorry to hear and hopefully he stays in school and gets his academics in order. As to the effect on Ws and Ls this yr. Probably none, unless the injury epidemic hits the TE position.

  • It's a shame because he probably has the most talent of all the TEs. I was pretty impressed with him in the spring game.

    Damn good post, Matt. I agree 100% with your 2nd paragraph. You can't take exams for college kids, you can't hold their hand to help 'em go to the bathroom, etc. Just compare the number of 2 to the % of students in the general student body population. Sure the general population doesn't have the CATS center, etc., but they also don't have the time commitment these guys have for practice, film study, travel, game day, etc.

    I don't find 2 academic casualties to rise to a level for alarm. Caffey is still in school and practicing from what I know, so he hasn't been made to sit out the academic semester by the University. I can remember many a student, including myself, who had to sit out a semester from class and petition our way back-in because our performance was so lacking our freshman year. Some of us came back, performed well and received our degree (me included), many others never made it back, at least not at the same university or soon thereafter.

    He's #23 in the group picture of the DB's on the home page. He along with 15 Harmon and 3 Tiller are really good looking athletes. Long and stout.

  • I mean we could seriously being do more for these kids. Have we come up with any FAKE classes they could take yet? Yeah, we could still be doing more. I heard the academic advisor at UNC might be looking for a change of scenery.

    I mean if you ain't cheating you ain't trying.....

    I can respect that.

    Plus, not that it's an excuse, but a full course load and being a D-I athlete, I'm not sure some realize what kind of workload that entails. Those are some long days.

    Two percent of the team having trouble academically isn't a bad rate.

    I doubt we see him stick around. I fully expect him to transfer and for us to add another ship for next year. Best of luck to the young man.
