Any idea if Dy'Shawn Mobley is still being looked at?

  • If I can skip out of work on time Thursday, I may check him out against a decent Oak Ridge team.

    JDHoss

  • Yes. They were supposed to be watching him during his first 3-4 games (wanted to see his film and go see him in person) before taking the next step with a possible offer.

  • Good deal.....Oak Ridge should be the toughest test until they get deep into the playoffs.

  • While Oak Ridge should be their toughest test, the Wildcats seen to be a bit overrated this season (although God help you if you say that around any of their fans. They spend most of their day flooding the Knoxville Sports Talk radio show asking Jimmy and John to investigate the TSSAA and their continuing crusade against Oak Ridge football).

I actually graduated from Powell the year after Coach Lowe did in '96, and I've not seen the town more excited about football and one particular player since we lost to Cherokee in the State Quarters back in 1994 and Matt himself was recruited by MTSU. I was able to see a couple games last year and hope to make it down for the Hardin Valley game at the end of the month. Mobley reminds me a bit of Rafael Little with his slight hesitation at the line while he reads the defense and makes his explosive first cut-step to the hole. He just gets down and you almost lose sight of him and then BLAM, he's in the secondary and your mind is blown.

Yeah, I'm as biased as they come, but I would LOVE to see this kid in Kentucky Blue. El Gato Azul Drummond, I am requesting you personally use all your connections and powers of persuasion to get him to Lexington.

I'll agree about OR being a little overrated this year, but IMO it will be Powell's last test until the playoffs.

  • Guess Matt Lowe is glad I wasn't giving the speech tonight or Powell would've lost....never take a win for granted! But seriously, the Panthers shouldn't have another game within two touchdowns for the rest of the regular season.

And WOW, Mobley gets better and better! I know there's another thread about him, too, but I wanted to bring this one back as well. It'd be great to steal another potential gem right out of UT's backyard and Coach Lowe deserves all the attention and praise for the revival job he's done with Powell the last few years.

  • Just got back from the game (it's close to a 2 hr. drive for me), and here are a few impressions/observations:

*According to a Powell fan, there was a UK coach there tonight, and an early newspaper article said Steve Pardue was in attendance.

*Mobley isn't quite as thick as what I thought looking at him on the tv highlights and Youtube. Listed at 6'0 215, I'd put him at maybe 5'10 and 195-200. I could be wrong though. I'm guessing he could hold 210-215 after a couple of years with Rock.

    *Good vision.....good cutback instincts....good pad level.....runs downhill....good burst & acceleration.

*I had him with 251 yards on 21 carries, but the Knoxville paper had him with 255, and 3 TD

*Much better top end speed than I thought he'd have. He flat ran away from the secondary on his TD runs, and Oak Ridge had some nice looking athletes back there.

*When Powell went out of the spread and into the power I, Mobley took the game over, and had a huge sack off a blitz late in the game from his LB spot.

All in all, I was very impressed with him, and wouldn't mind one bit seeing him with a UK offer. He's a guy who puts you on the edge of your seat every time he touches the football.

Thanks for the report, WoK. Good to see you again! cheers

Good stuff, JDHoss... He may have lost a little weight since training camp getting ready for the season, but I saw him up here at UK's camp, and he looked every bit of 210 or so. The kid is really cut.

I know scholarships are limited, but I think it would lead to a quick commitment if UK went ahead and pulled the trigger.

And I could be wrong about his weight. I was trying to compare him with the Powell QB, who is listed at 6'2 225, and indeed looks every bit that. As you said, Mobley is really cut.

  • Powell High School exacted revenge tonight on an Anderson County team that unexpectedly knocked them out of the playoffs last year.

Final Score: Powell 53, Anderson Co 16

And Mobley just keeps on truckin'. My brother (who lives one block away from the stadium) reports Deshawn had SIX (6) rushing touchdowns in the FIRST HALF. I didn't even know that was possible.

  • Just offer the kid. He sounds like a winner. How does he compare to Shadrach Thornton? Jeff, could you give us some insight on this?

  • Finally got a look at his stats this morning. Powell had the game wrapped up by halftime, so Mobley only played two quarters.

In two quarters he only had 10 carries....10 carries for 192 yards and six touchdowns!

  • Imagine getting that stat line in fantasy, thats merely 55.2 points. Wow.

  • It's clear to me that we're only taking one RB in this class and are slow-playing him b/c we want someone else more and are "afraid" Mobley might just up and commit if we offer, thus screwing things up with the other kid. Hope it doesn't bite us in the ass, b/c Mobley is a STUD.

  • We might end up having to take 2 RB this year with Sanders getting injured multiple times. Caffey may also be moved to DB, so the depth may not be as great as it seems.

Great points, and I damn near guarantee we sign a full class of 25 again.

  • I think we'll take 2 RBs in this class. 1 smaller "scat back" like Ace Wales, and 1 "power back" like Thornton or or Mobley.

  • Why not take them all 3? We need playmakers, and all 3 seem to be very good. How are Wales hands? I think he could be a pretty good utility player for us.

I understand slow playing Mobley for Thorton, but it is looking like if we don't act soon, the big boys are going to come calling, then what if Thorton decides to go elsewhere? Could definitely come back to bite us, as Dotson said.

Could also be that there are other playmakers out there that the staff feels like they have a chance with that maybe aren't really being reported. As some of these SEC school's classes get full, some of their offers maybe get pulled and that puts us in contention with some guys we wouldn't normally expect to have a chance with.

Whatever the case may be, we are in a serious need of dependable playmakers. I wish we could take all three of the previous mentioned players, plus sign one more stud receiver, if the numbers allow it.
