Are Ky football fans ready for a defensive minded team?

  • As a fan base Ky fans really seem to like their offense much better than their defense. Maybe we haven't had great defensive teams in the past. The elite sec teams have elite defenses and that is why they win. In the NFL defense wins campionships and I think it does in college too. This defense coach will move this team to be a defensive force. Will the fans base reconignize the change and embrace it or complain about not scoring 42 a game,. I personnally can handle all the 17-14 wins this team could get. One last point, the last time KY beat Tenn it was 7 to 0. Please reply

p.s. Thrusday night was hard to watch, but I loved the defense.

  • I'm still very optimistic about our defense, but before we get too carried away... people seem to be forgetting the missed opportunities their QB misfired on. Our DB's left guys wide open on a few plays... two of which, could have easily been TD's. What would we be saying about our "D" if we had given up those easy points... and lost the game? There would not be a love fest like we are witnessing now... I guarantee that. Now, having said that... I'm sure they will (or can) improve on that. I'm thrilled about having a better run defense, but that won't help if we're getting burned on the long pass plays.

  • I've been ready for years. As aggravated as I was with the entire offense Thursday, I was equally pleased with the D.

  • I disagree. I think the casual UK football fans are the ones who miss Mumme going for it every other 4th down, no regard for defense and dealing with a loss a lot easier as ling as we scored 42 points. I believe the true n true fans know and realize what Defense means and how AWESOME it would be to have a dominating D.

I also have to somewhat disagree with you just a little about having great defenses winning NC's. In college we have seen teams win with tremendous Offenses and average D. Aubrun last year gave up a ton of points yet found a away (scam newton) to outscore opponents.

But to answer your question, yes. I think the real fans are foaming at the mouth for a great defense but as the Prof stated, it's gonna take both.

  • To be really successful in the SEC you have to have a mixture of both. As a ex, UK's defense did a great job Thursday night putting the O in position to get points and they didn't take advantage of it. This won't last, Joker and Randy are too good and there is enough talent on the Offense for this to be corrected.

The defense also did a great job of protecting their end of the field, The entire first Half UK's d played football on the wrong end of the field. Regardless of the talent of the opposition, to only give up 3 pt's after continuous 3 and outs is pretty impressive. In years past, we would've had to overcome a 14+ deficit to win the game.

This year, the D will be responsible for keeping us in the game. Atleast in the beginning. I would wager, that against CMU and U of L, we capitalize on these chances and win big in both games,

  • If UK wins, I do not care which unit leads the way.

  • I am perfectly fine with a Defensive team. Prefer it actually. But this basketball fanbase won't stand for it. Go to any other stadium in the SEC, and fans are loud as hell for their Defense, and you can here a pin drop for their offense. Go to Commonwealth, and we cheer for our first downs, and get loud when WE get in the red zone, then we sit on our hands for our defense. It's got to be the worst home field advantage in the SEC.

Their defense might not have been great statistically but there is no doubt their D won the national championship last year.

  • I don't care what the score is as long as the Cats win. The frustrating thing for me is that when one unit is real good the other is horrible. To get to the level of winning 8 plus game a year we must be solid in all three areas offense, defense, and special teams. I thought that against Western we were at least solid on defense and excellent on special teams. Hopefully the offense can still become the solid unit we expected and we can have a solid year.

  • I think what you'll find as the season moves along is that the offense will get better and the defense will come down to earth a bit.

People are making sweeping assumptions on the rest of the season based on one game, as if nobody ever practices or executes better than they do on Day 1.

  • I second this. I will take a win defensive or offensive. A win is a win!

  • Given the option, I'l take a lot of D over a lot of O any day.

  • I just don't know if this team can have "a lot of D." Very encouraged by that first game, but still need to see how DL stacks up against bigger SEC teams.

That isn't correct. The last time UK beat UT was in 1984 and the score was 17-12

  • Agree completely, Jeff.

I have no idea what what type of team we will have, period. It is confusing at this moment and perplexing. I'm hoping that next week will shed some light and if we get a repeat performance well then I will start asking questions.

I, for one, would love to have a strong defense but I honestly prefer to not have to make a choice - I would like to have a good 3-way team (yes, I said 3-way - sorry!) with solid O, D, and ST.
