Are the Duke Blue Devils flop artists? Ask John Calipari.

ATLANTA - Have Duke basketball players have mastered the art of the flop? John Calipari didn't mind ruffling a few feathers to make that point when on national television.

  • I thought some of the charging calls really were flops and I have to admit that Duke is good at flopping and Cal had a perfect right to say something about it. I bet other coaches were applauding him privately because KY isnt the only school that has been a victim of the Duke flop, but also Coach K. has a right also to take up for his team like any coach would no matter how wrong he is about the statement Cal made.

  • Calipari just said in a VERY PUBLIC way what many have been saying for years. The block/charge call in college basketball is a joke thanks mainly to teams like Duke who use it to their advantage and have for MANY years. Nobody wants to see games decided by players constantly hitting the deck at the slightest contact because it really does cheapen a GOOD defensive play where a help side defender does establish position and takes a legitimate charge. Refs then are reduced to going 50/50 or worse due to players always hitting the floor and they feel compelled to make a call. And with the type of offense Cal stresses, is it any wonder he points out the BS regarding the block/charge debacle that exists in college basketball?? Just play ball man!

  • Simple solution. When the ref sees s player fall that he feels is a no call, the ncaa should have the refs call blocking instead

    truecatfan4life

  • I think this comes off as whining. Flopping wouldn't work if our players weren't out of control all the time. Flopping has always happened. Don't blame the team doing it. Blame the refs for not seeing it and blame your own players for making it very easy to make charging calls.

  • NBA got this right. CBB should follow suit. Maybe not suspend the players, but a flop could be an automatic two shot technical with possession. Simple.

Matt, I went back and watched the 1st half and there were flimsy charging calls that were flops by the Duke players and 1 that looked legit. So I think they have spent plenty of time learning the fine art of the flop and thats what it is acting and the Oscar goes to.............Duke.

  • I think the guys played exceptionally well considering there age and the venue. I think they would get a lot more out of a game like this compared to EASY U. I would not want to play them in January to march. Also I think the national press recognizes how good KY WILL BE COME TOURNAMENT TIME. Sit tight and ENJOY.

  • Coach K's definition of flop is actually wrong. LOL

“I mean, he has a right to say whatever he wants. I thought we took some amazing charges and probably – I thought we had taken a couple more. There’s a difference between a charge and a flop. A flop means you don’t take any contact. I would hope that anybody that watches the game would say our kids really played outstanding defense and were there to take charges.”

NBA actually did a video of explaining flop. Someone should send it to Coach K.

IMHO you missed the point. It's about Coach K teaching it as a defensive strategy to ALL of his teams (except the national team). So it is now an official top notch (sarcasm) defense much like the 2-3 zone, 1-3-1 zone, full and half court press, and ... the K FLOP.

  • Of course, we can't praise Cal for using the one-and-done rule to his advantage and not give that other coach credit for taking advantage of the way NCAA refs call charging.

    ukcat15

  • In case anyone wants to see the game again and doesnt know , you can go to ESPN3 and watch the replay in case you want to and didnt DVR it. I really paid close attention to the charging calls they called on UK and it was educational.

  • I watched the game also and there were a few really bad flops and a few charges. But for K to complain or cry because a coach calls his team out on things is no different than him complaining all throughout the game for ref's to give his team calls. He is running his mouth from start to finish to the ref's and they tend to listen, I really see the beginning of the end of coach K. He used to never say anything about what other coaches have said throughout the years but now he seems to be getting rattled a lot easier. I really think he has maybe two three years tops and I for one can't wait to watch the Dookies struggle when he leaves just like UK and UNC did when they lost two great coaches. I think Duke will hire Dawkins from Stanford and I think he will fold under the pressure then after a few years of losing they will hire the homerun hire kind of like what we did. Just like I've told some of the Duke guys on the national board he can't coach forever can he lol...

  • We can't forget how "great", our player were at taking a charge during the Sutton years. He taught those guys how to take a charge. There will be teams watching tape of the game and know how to get charges and fouls out of our Cats. Cal, he will teach our young players how to avoid this. He is a great coach and teacher. It is, what it is. We all just need to be patient. These guys will explode, it's just a matter of time.

He's nowhere near done sad to say. He was close to being done. Then he started coaching team USA and got a resurgence in recruiting that saved his ass. College coaches should not be allowed to coach Olympic teams. That includes Cal. It gives an unfair recruiting advantage and I can't believe other coaches aren't up in arms about it. Anyway, thanks to the team USA olympic exposure he'll be around another 10 years. At least. He'll be coaching Duke long after Coach Cal leaves Kentucky. I'd bet the house on that and with the way my luck is going lately I wouldn't bet against me. I need to book a flight to Vegas stat!

  • Not going to happen he won't be coaching in ten years I will give you four maybe five but not ten. Hell the man is what 70 years old he won't be coaching ten years from now he will be receiving in home care lol. I understand what you are saying but his recruiting hasn't been all that great and I think Parker will end up at State. He may possible land Okafor and Jones maybe but even then he doesn't coach one and done guy's very well. He's more of an upper classmen coach and the guy's he's after are one and done guy's. Just look at what he did with Rivers nothing can't say that about Irving because he didn't play but a few games but as you can see he's pitching Okafor right now with forcing the ball to Plumblee. I really believe if we play Duke again our bigs will shut him down. But Cal will be at UK years after K retires he will also have as many titles as well.

    wildcatfan440

  • Fact is that we were beaten by a well coached and pretty veteran team. Forget this flop stuff and watch the Cats get better. Down the road, with a healthy and experienced team in 3 months we beat that bunch. But, let's not look like excuse makers. JMO.

I wish I knew you personally so I could literally bet you. He may be 70 but you're only as old as you feel. Does he look 70? Act 70? Nate is right. He's a damn vampire. Cal will only be at UK another 5 years max.

That is the FIBA rule. It should be the case for all levels; there's no excuse for it.

too bad Coach Cal didn't say this at the end of the game.

He said it at half time, with nice little smirk.
