Athletic spending

  • Read an article earlier that said UK was spending 7 million dollars fixing up soccer fields etc..Unbelievable really..Those sports should come after football and basketball have everything they need..Seven million would go a long way in football right now..What a joke..

Don, while you and I may have the same over-arching opinions on spending, I think this is old news and was reported (and whined about by many people, including me) several months ago.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the same spending we've already beaten to death.

  • It is a finalized plan from before but they made an announcement about it the other day. It's unclear as to whether or not the money is from private UKAA funds or if they are saying that someone donated the $7M for the project.

IF it's from UKAA funds then I agree that the money could have been better spent for FB.

    from the article below:
On December 13, 2011, the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees approved UK Athletics’ initial scope proposal to renovate and upgrade the UK Softball Complex. Tuesday’s meeting increased that initial scope by approximately $2 million.

  • Maybe everything else will be renovated and caught up now. So it will be time to start upgrading football facilities and build a recruiting room.

Know the facts before complaining. According to the article that cobbycobb posted, the $7 million dollars for the soccer complex came from private donors, not from the UKAA.

The only sports that really need some upgrades are:
    - football: mostly aestethic issues at stadium, plus new pressbox and luxury suites
    - tennis: indoor facility (it's ok, but definitely could use some work)
    - rifle: haven't had a facility upgrade since 1995 sans the new electronic scoring system installed in 2006-07

I believe all other sports are in pretty good shape now or are in the process of getting upgraded.

allegedly that is a done deal and will be announced after the first of 2013 (minus 30 mil or so for a new baseball field)

  • If it were up to me we'd remove the soccer field and build a recruiting room for the football the size of a soccer field. lol. Kidding kinda.

  • Rumor on the street is that the legislature is going to approve around 500 million in new bonding for uk of which a portion will r used by the athletic department.

    hoptownukfan

  • That would be incredible and almost unprecedented. I am waiting on pins and needles.

Okay, so are you willing to name your source? Probably not.

    rob65

  • 1. Nobody ever names a source and it's ridiculous to think they would.
    2. Let's wait and see what comes of it and allow others to come to their own conclusion about other posters.

I sure hope that is true. I am actually one of the few people that do not mind the minor sports getting upgrades in facilities. Both softball, track, and soccer were long over due as our facilites looked high schoolish. BUT football needs some improvements to Commenwealth Stadium. There is no doubt about that.

  • I hope it is true as well but in this economy and with the Commonwealth staring at over 30 billion unfunded mandate for state and county employees and teachers pensions I will believe it when it happens. Kentucky is looking at floating a 4.3 billion dollar bond just to stabilize the pension debt.

As of now, UK Football is scheduled to get approximately $70 million. That will be used towards updating Commonwealth Stadium.

  • One of the main reasons the soccer/softball complex is getting its first major renovations is because Kentucky is hosting the 2013 SEC Softball Tournament.

  • Does anyone know where we are as far as being TitleIX compliant, how this has affected money going to other sports, and exactly what it requires to be compliant? Please facts only, no opinions or speculation and if you can condense the info instead of pasting some gobbly goop written rules by attys that really don't want you to understand what your reading, I would appreciate it greatly! It would really be nice to know how much this affects spending budgets.

  • I know Title IX exists and that it exists for very good reasons, BUT there are A LOT of schools that are not compliant with Title IX. The NCAA is not too critical of it unless there is some huge discrepancies. It's a lot like accounting too. The numbers for co-ed teams are fudged to make it look better than it typically is.

  • A lot of men's sports have been dropped at other schools in order to balance the books for title 9. It is interesting that UK has a more sports than a lot of SEC schools. We are expanding secondary non-revenue sports while man other Universities are going in the other direction. Of course if you are tight with football it allows you to revenue shift a lot more to non-revenue sports. Capital One baby.

  • I for one am very happy to see all these facility upgrades to other sports. So in the past ten years we will have a new Track and Field Stadium, new softball stadium, new soccer stadium, renovation of nutter field house and practice fields, new basketball practice facility, new wildcat lodge, renovation of the shively sports center (baseball and track and field/cross country team locker rooms, coaches offices, lounges, and weight room), and countless other locker room/team lounge renovations of other sports. I guess things down the road are a new baseball stadium, indoor tennis center renovations, Commonwealth stadium renovations, new rifle facility, and new golf facility. If Mitch Barnhart were to tackle all these facility issues by the time he's done He would probably go down as the best athletic director we've ever had (Yes even though football struggles, it has always struggled). Also here are the renderings and plans for the new softball facility and the preliminary drawings for the new soccer stadium.
