Available scholarships and options to fill them- Bball

  • Okay, Jeff, Chris, Matt, James, etc., can one or more of you guys review how many scholarships we have available for basketball and what our realistic options for filling those spots are?

It appears to me that we have the following for next year:
    1. Harrow
    2. Goodwin
    3. Noel
    4. Cauley
    5. Hood
    6. Wiltjer
    7. Poythress
Edited to add: I'm embarrassed, but I really don't even know who else, if anyone, is on scholarship for us.

This looks like a typical 7 man rotation for Calipari, but I'm not sure how much play Hood will get. I'm also not sure how polished Cauley will be in the beginning. Other than Bennett do you see the staff going after anyone else hard? Is there anyone else left on the board that Cal would even consider, including JCs?

Because Hood will have had more than one year to recover, I think he will be ok and can be a 6th/7th man. Beckham is on Scholarship too. I think Twanny can play 5 minutes a game. IMO we need to land another 2/3 and a 4/5 for a "perfect" rotation. But remember, we didn't have a "perfect" rotation this year. So it's likely bennet and done. But the BC transfer intrigues me. Who knows if we're even interested though.

  • Here's the current roster:

    2012-13 KENTUCKY BASKETBALL ROSTER
(Statistics listed are averages for 2011-12 season)

NO. NAME POS. HT. WT. YR. PTS RBS AST
    4 Jon Hood G 6-7 215 Jr. N/A N/A N/A
    5 Jarrod Polson G 6-2 185 Jr. 0.1 0.4 0.1
    10 Twany Beckham G 6-5 205 Sr. 0.0 0.5 0.1
    12 Ryan Harrow G 6-2 175 So. N/A N/A N/A
    13 Sam Malone G 5-11 190 So. 1.0 0.3 0.2
    32 Brian Long G 5-9 150 So. 0.2 0.2 0.0
    33 Kyle Wiltjer F 6-9 239 So. 5.0 1.8 0.4
    Willie Cauley-Stein F/C 7-0 225 Fr.
    Archie Goodwin G 6-5 180 Fr.
    Nerlens Noel F/C 6-11 215 Fr.
    Alex Poythress G/F 6-7 215 Fr.

They have seven guys on scholarship at the moment (4 freshmen, Hood, Wiltjer, Harrow) and likely Polson/Beckham as well (those scholarships are renewable each year and there aren't any promises, but you'd imagine they'll have 2 available). I wouldn't rule out a transfer, even if they have to sit out a year. That leaves probably 2 actual spots left and I think it's pretty obvious they are hoping to land Anthony Bennett for one of those.

  • Do we have a "bail out" option if Bennett chooses to go elsewhere?

This seems to be a pretty weak overall year for recruiting.

Do you mean in general or for UK? We have the consensus #1 class even without Bennett, so our class is solid. If you mean in general, that's debatable. There is a sense that it has been Noel/Muhammed and then everyone else, but that may just be because so many other top 25 players committed to their schools last signing period and didn't get talked about as much. I can't wait to see Poythress and Goodwin. The Jordan game got me excited.

Our class seems pretty solid, although I'm not sure where they will pan out among all the classes so far.

  • if Bennett is actually better than Stokes at UT as rated prior to Stokes early departure then we should be in good shape if Cal can sign him?

    JDHoss

  • Agreed on the Stokes comment. The recent all star games have been a little sloppy as far as skill sets, but there is no doubt that this class is tremendously athletic at least in the top 30 or so. Let's just sit back and watch the Cat's improve and each of the Tar Heels regress the longer they stay with Roy Williams.

You have GOT to be kidding!!! #1 class 4th year IN A ROW!! And you say "weak". How spoiled you are. Would you prefer Billy G's recruits?

He is talking about the entire 2012 class not just UK's. And that has been the opionion of just about everybody that is involved with recruiting.

Is Jon Hood a Jr or a redshirt So?

  • Hood is a redshirt junior. He came in with and played on the Wall/Cousins team and also played on the Knight Final Four team before sitting out this year with an injury.

  • You have to think Amile Jefferson becomes an option at this point. Despite what some have said, I've had multiple people tell me Amile was ready to commit to UK months ago but we asked him to wait (we did the same thing with Trevor Lacy last year.) Now that we've missed on Bazz, lost MKG & everyone else to the NBA, plus looking at a battle to land Bennett, a 5-star combo forward seems like a great option for UK. And, with Leslie returning to NC State, UK should look even better to Amile.

Just think there would be more smoke coming from that direction though and there hasn't been.

  • IMO, if we aren't able to land Bennett, we'll offer Andrew Young, the 6'9 JUCO PF from California.. The kids got a nice offer sheet with Vandy, Tx A&M, NC St, Oregon and a couple others.. I just think Cal will want a more physical guy that can help on the inside that we really don't have now.. If we get Bennett, I don't think we offer him..

I also heard on the local Memphis sports channel a few days ago about a JUCO G that Memphis was looking at and they mentioned that UK was also one of the schools looking at him.. I didn't pay attention to it a whole lot and missed the name and then UK was mentioned and I was like, Who are they talking about? Then they went to something else.. Anyone know who that may be?

    I checked on JUCO Junction and the only 2 kids in the 2012 class that showed Memphis as interested were these 2;

Cameron Golden - 3 star - 6'1 PG from Memphis Ridgeway
Josh Gray - 3 star - 6'1 PG from Memphis Briarcrest Christian

Both of these kids have pretty solid offer sheets and some other good programs showing interest, so, maybe it was one of these that UK may have been checking out.. Neither sound like a typical Cal recruit, but, could likely be solid backups to Harrow and guys we'd have on the roster a couple of years..

    bluecatntn

  • How can you not know Andrew Young already signed with Texas A&M? And we are looking at Torian Graham again for a 2G backup. Use GOOGLE once and a while before you post and you'll be more up to date.

    jimlowe7

  • I wouldn't be shocked if there was still a transfer out there that UK might have interest in.

I think technically that Hood will be listed as just a senior next year. He has not applied for a red-shirt year and apparently he will wait until after next season to determine if he wants to use the red-shirt option to gain another year of eligibility. He will obviously discuss this with Cal.

Wasn't aware Young had committed anywhere. Hadn't seen that. Last I heard, UK was interested. Sorry to get your panties in a wod. Also, it's been pretty apparent for the longest time that Graham is about 99% not going to qualify and have to go the prep route. Can't believe you wouldn't know that and would actually consider him much more than a very, very very small option. I wouldn't call that much of a backup plan..

    bluecatntn

  • In fairness, Chris, there hasn't been a lot of smoke coming from the Jefferson camp for any school. Just a lot of speculation up to this point.

I don't think "weak" is the right word. There are still *really* good players at the top end of this class, but it doesn't appear to have as much depth as the last three did from, say, 20-50.

But when you actually read about last year's recruits, early it was a different story. AD admits to wondering if he would even go D-1, and if you remember people really wanted C.J. Leslie and how upset some were, saying thank god we got MKG. And how good can a white kid be that he signs without even being on campus. There were alot of question marks in last year's class when it first came together but look what they did. I expect no less from this group and whoever else signs with us before this recruitment time is over.
