***BREAKING: MITCH BARNHART'S THOUGHTS ON COACHING SEARCH**

The following is a transcript of Barnhart's comments in full:

    OPENING STATEMENT:
"We continue to work through the process," Barnhart said. "The goal is to continue to build up the foundation that Joker has put in place. The young talent that we've got, the respect and the accountability that he's gained in the locker room, the way we conduct our business, those are the things we want to build upon. We've working at it and we'll work our way through that process. We won't short-circuit that. I don't think there's any reason to do that. We'll let you know when we get done.

"It's a good job. People are excited about the opportunity to coach in our league, to coach at the University of Kentucky and we'll continue to work at that. That's sort of where we are. That's the update we have."

DO YOU HAVE A TIMETABLE IN MIND?
"We don't have a timetable," Barnhart said. "Like I said, we 'll respect the process and continue to work our way through it. We've been working at it since we made the change a couple of weeks ago. The players have been great through the whole process. The coaching staff has been wonderful through the process. Joker has been as class as class can be. He's been an amazing guy, which hasn't changed at all. Just exactly what you would expect. He expected our players to conduct themselves a certain way and he's been an absolute example of how to do that. I respect him very, very much. On a day when we close our season down that's about where I'll leave it with you today."

HAVE POTENTIAL CANDIDATES BEEN MORE RESPONSIVE THIS TIME THAN BEFORE RICH BROOKS WAS HIRED?
"No one has been offered the job," Barnhart said. "People have been responsive to talk about the job. It was much different last time, we were on probation looking at 19 scholarships and there wasn't a lot of folks thinking it was a really great opportunity. Coach Brooks came in here, took it by the horns and fought through some really, really difficult times.

"The opportunity we have ahead of us, as you saw today, we put up more than 400 yards of offense, we've got some young guys still trying to figure out what to do and how to get it in the end zone and finish those pieces. That will come. The person that walks in will have the opportunity to inherit some of that young talent. There are obviously some things we need to get better (at) and we all know that, that's why we're in this position but we do have some young players in this locker room that do care about this program and have a chance to move it forward. We'll just continue to work through it."

DO YOU HAVE ANYONE HELPING YOU WITH THE SEARCH?
"We're working our way through the process," Barnhart said. "That's for me to know and at the end of the deal we'll work our way through all that. I've got a good staff and we've got good folks."

ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC QUALITIES YOU'RE LOOKING FOR? OFFENSIVE COACH? DEFENSIVE?
"I'm not going to get into specifics really," Barnhart said. "I want a person that...we always talk about you'll know when you see it and you'll know when you feel it and talk about fit. We'll work our way through that. There is no blueprint for these things. I've seen them work a lot of different ways at a lot of different places, schools that have a lot more tradition, a lot less tradition, mid-majors, big-time places, there's blueprint for these types of things. We're looking for the right fit. We'll continue to work our way through that.

"I appreciate it. Everybody's been patient. Misinformation flies around and I get all that, so I won't respond to that noise, we'll just keep working our way as we always have here for the last 10 or so years. I appreciate the way you all have respected our team and coaches and hopefully we'll get to you sooner rather than later."

  • Thanks for transcribing, Matt. No real breaking news there, about what I would expect Barnhart to say at this point. And thankfully, in quickly reading through those comments, Barnhart did not say anything too goofy or likely to incite. But with the season having mercifully come to an end, and a limited window of time to recruit, the clock is now ticking for Barnhart.

  • How many times did he say "we will continue to work through that"? It sounds like he's having a hard time selling the program.

  • Basically, "I'll speak to you guys, but won't really talk to you."

Are we going to be the first program in the SEC to have a coaching vacancy... but the last program to fill it?

Geez Mitch... if you can't run the ball, hand it off to someone who can.

  • Sounds like someone will be in place around Spring Practice time,or maybe the start of practice next fall.In the meantime,no talking Petrino,Jones,or any other legitimate coach we fans may wish for.Maybe there's a coach in waiting on the flag football intramural fields, and Mitch will make his pitch.

  • I've got no problems with Mitch's statement and he's making it clear that's he's in charge and he'll make the decision when he feels he's got the right guy. Basically, he's saying "I'm in charge" and I respect that. The other edge to this sword is that his credibility, and very likely his job, depends on getting the right guy to take the reigns and make UK a winner. Mitch knows this and I think the UK fandom should give him a little maneuver space to get the next Head Coach.

  • I really appreciate that Barnhart has improved and upgraded the non revenue sports, which is important. As for an AD who is good for the alumni, fans, boosters and football in general, my wife would have taken the job for much less.

    Katonic

  • Just showed my wife this, her statement was "You really don't like me do you..." Thought that was funny

I understand that there can be some valid reasons for being vague on key details. However, if you are going to have a short "news conference" it would be encouraging to hear Mitch talk generally about timeframe, e.g., a goal of hiring someone before 2013; we or he is working through a short list, some list, or no list; and that he understands that fans want someone sooner rather than later; and also he hopes that regardless of who is hired he hopes that the fans will match the new hire's intensity with all out support. It's one thing to read a prepared statement and then another to take questions and answer same in a way that makes fans wonder if the process is going as expected--better than expected-or not so well. I am sure Mitch is optimistic and even if the process is bogged down (for reasons beyond his control) please give us some reasons to be hopeful.

    Go Blue.

  • I personally cannot stand Mitch Barnhart. There I have said it. He can change my mind about his ability by making a good hire but I can't stand what he says in public. What coach is out there who wants to build on "the foundation Joker has put in place"?. What an arrogant and stupid thing to say. No one wants to build on a guy who demolished a mid level SEC program in a year. If you are focused primarily on "the respect and the accountability that he's gained in the locker room, the way we conduct our business" instead of playing winning football you are completely lost. What competent coach would want to work in this nut house. If you have a bad program and want it to be better you don't start out telling prospective hires how to do their job.

Point taken. I don't have the general disdain for Mitch that many have but I am a long suffering and frustrated fan who just wants to see a team that every once in a while competes for and SEC crown. I was 13 years old the last time UK won the SEC (1977) and that was with an * due to probation. Can this program ever overcome the lack of a solid recruiting base coupled w/competing in THE TOUGHEST conference in America???

  • Saw this:

Uk met w Jones people last night but didn't know outcome. Saying deal is off and UK changed deal.

Sources close to the situation tell us the meeting between Butch Jones and Kentucky administration did not go as expected by the parties. Said "the deal was changed". Also said that Butch is no longer a candidate for the UK position.

    Mods, any truth?

Realistically, Arkansas has had their job open since April when Petrino's dumbassery unraveled on them.

Saw that one too. While I realized it is only 1 game, watching his defense collapse in the 4th quarter today doesn't exactly excite me about him.

  • I really just don't get why people think Mitch should be handling this whole coaching search out in the open. Any of the coaches that we may be talking to that are currently employed don't want their names associated with a search, for obvious reasons. I don't know, maybe it is just todays culture of instant gratification and people thinking they have a right to any and all information. Now with that said I wish Mitch had acknowledged that he knows we need someone in place to secure the recruits we have and hopefully either steal some from somebody else or get in on some who are still wavering. I am sure he knows this, but even statements like that could appease some of the masses. I thought his statement was much like one from some coaches, lots of ambiguity, doesn't want to show his cards (good or bad), but feels the heat so gives a statement. My gut feel is we have somebody in place by shortly after the SEC Championship game. And if Mark Stoops is on the list, as suggested above, that would be another name I could get behind.

Surely you aren't going to base your total opinion on one quarter of football? Which was against the #4 team in the country? If that was the case you would probably have to be against every coach in America. Gotta look at the whole body of work.

No that was just my initial thought to his name being thrown in the mix. I looked at the win/loss record of Arizona when he was DC there and it is 33-34. His defense at Florida State this year is ranked #1, I think, in total yards allowed. I tend to put more weight on what he did at Arizona as the school is more similar to UK than FSU. I like many others am frustrated with UK football right now and want to get in someone who will turn the program around and win games.

  • Wow, what is up with the Mitch Barnhart hate? You realize MB is the AD responsible for Coach Cal, Matthew Mitchell, Gary Henderson, and Rich Brooks?
Both mens and womens hoops are playing at an elite level on a yearly basis as we speak..as is the baseball team. Brooks took Uk out of probation doldrums into a team that went to 5 straight bowls, beat LSU the 2007 BCS champs, beat Florida St, Clemson, UofL,
I say let Mitch B.....B. Hes done quite fine hiring coaches thusfar. Rich Brooks was a success imo. Its not though UK is an appealing job, other than being in the SEC..

Blah, Blah, Blah... I'm so damn tired of hearing how freaking great our AD is. Fact is that when Mitch Barnyard came here he was said to be a "Football AD" with all this experience with winning football programs that he was going to turn us around. He has not done didley squat for the football team. However, our rifle team and out tiddley wink team have won national championships. Personally, I don't give a damn about the olympic sports. When Mitch couldn't (or wouldn't) get it done for Brooks he should have been gone. I'm so tired of hearing the multitude of excuses for all these years of how we can't or why we don't win. I don't believe for one minute that a coach can't come here and get the job done. Someone has to have the vision and fortitude to make the RIGHT hire. I don't think that person is our current AD.
