Barnhart takes out ad in Columbia Tribune

  • Welcoming Missouri to the SEC. Nice gesture.

  • Guessing there is a similar ad for aTm in one of their local papers. Also didn't realize that Mizzou's Pres is a UK grad. Dr Capilouto (sp?) tweeted a welcome to the 2 new presidents and mentioned it.

  • I would agree nice gesture, except that every dime spent on things like this is money not spent on our own football program. Call me crazy, but it seems a bit much to me when we can't even advertise/promote our own spring game.

I like the ad, and am all for welcoming Mizzou and A&M... part of what makes the SEC so special (outside of the amazing athletes) is the camaraderie. That said, I hadn't thought about it like this... and I think that's a fair point.

  • Like a cupholder for the locker room? That's about what the ad probably cost....

  • Not a matter of actual monetary figures. But I think you knew that.

It is not a big cost and seeing it will make many people realize that Lexington isn't that far away. They might decide to favor the city with a visit for a men's basketball game, a (future) football game, or any number of other sports if the seed is planted in advance so they can make plans for the trip. or, they might watch on TV an number of events they might not have otherwise.

It isn't just welcoming them to the conference it is advertising to the large sports media market they play in which is one of the most significant reason Missouri was added to the conference.

Indeed I did. It was my way of expressing my sentiment for the idea...

a fair point also, but I think you hit the nail on the head with the: "They might decide to favor the city with a visit for a men's basketball game"

I'm not really against this type of advertising at all, and I will give Mitch, or whoever is in charge props for the football signs around Lex and Louisville. I also know the add couldn't cost too much money, but in light of the lack of advertising we put into things like our own spring game, I still see any money being better spent promoting our own team.

  • It's a good jesture and advertising. Classy move.

Essentially how I feel... it's a great gesture and I'm not unhappy it was done by any means. That said, did we take out space in the LHL or CJ for our own spring game? I live in NOLA and don't get those papers, but from what I remember reading on here, weren't most people underwhelmed by the lack of excitement/promotion? The ad wouldn't buy a chinstrap likely, but it's very telling as to the football team's place on the proverbial totem pole.

I didn't know away fans could buy tickets to UK hoops games. Is that true?

I am quite certain that people show up in Lexington without tickets but hoping to get basketball tickets on a regular basis during the season.

We should fire Mitch. He is so uncreative. He used the same ad twice, and just changed the name. Terrible director of athletics........

    Couple things here:
    1) I see your point, but at the end of the day, its the Spring Game. Why spend money to advertise to our own fans to come watch a scrimmage. I know a lot of conversation/debate revolved around this a few months ago, so let's not beat that horse, its JMHO.

    2) This IS money well spent. This IS invested money in football. Cal doesn't need any help in recruiting, but football does. Anything we can do to leverage these new markets for potential football prospects, I am ALL for. We have all talked for years about how just the in-state talent in Kentucky isn't going to cut it in the SEC, and how crucial the in-roads in Georgia and Florida are and will continue to be. This is an opportunity to begin "marketing" the program. Just like selling Coke or Twinkies, its all about brand recognition, and UK ain't got it right now--this could be a step.

This to me is up there with the tweet from Cal apologizing to recruits when he was busy getting 6 kids drafted.
