Basketball? Why

  • We are play LSU today, but everything you see on the front page of Catspause is about basketball. It is no wonder that people say UK is a basketball school. I support all the sports programs at UK, but I support them in their season.

Because we cover BOTH sports equally. And because the embargo for preseason interviews/stories/etc. ended at midnight last night. There has, is, and will be plenty of football coverage.

Didn't we just have this conversation last week? People had the same complaint, while the fact was there was literally twice as manu football related stories/articles as basketball.

I am a football guy 1st and foremost. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge round ball fan (as big a fan as any) but I live and die UK football. That being said, I want to know what's going on with all sports, regardless of the time of year.

  • I woke this morning and saw these and said to myself, "Someone is going to complain with these stories about basketball on the frontpage the day we play LSU." Well guess what? I was right! headslap

  • I think the problem in this particular case is that a number of basketball stories were posted after the football stories related to the game but before the game occurred. Thus, when viewing the home page, all the magic eight ball articles have moved from the top of the page to the headlines section.

The "headlines section" of the home page has two bball articles and six football articles.
The "featured" of the home page has three football articles.
The Top of the page section, where the pic switches back and forth between four listed articles (I believe they are chosen in order of "newness") contains four bball articles.

Point being made by 1DHenry is that as game time approaches, the TotP stories (which are held in the eyes of many people to be the most important at the moment) are all basketball which make it appear as if bball is upstaging football in importance as the game approaches. That is where people's eyes are drawn andin every news source I have ever seen that is the intention.

So, if one (an editor of a news source) doesn't want the readers to think that one topic is being treated as more important than another, one shouldn't let articles regarding that topic be upstaged as the topic is reaching an important point.

Note: Not saying the staff here thinks less of football but rather that when the staff puts things together this way, don't be surprised to find people draw conclusions from it as such things are typically put together in order to define relative importance. Just sayin'.

  • It could have something to do with the fact that our basketball program actually has some promise for the future. As opposed to our football team that is regressing badly...I personally cant wait for Madness. moon

  • How about the Kentucky Farm Bureau commercial? "The game is basketball". Guys the football program is not generating much excitement at this point.

I don't disagree Matt - the point about the embargo is paramount to why there are additional stories, however you seem pretty quick to engage in these sorts of conversations.

  • why shouldn't he defend it? It's a stupid accusation that is merit less. The guys here do an outstanding job of covering football. maybe the LOD can complain about how the UKAA ended the embargo on the day we play a football game this week.

Fair point, but my point was generic about engaging in these sorts of fruitless conversations.

  • Yeah I'd much much rather hear about a football team that gets clobbered every week than our national title contender basketball team.

  • Get the f#%k over it dude! UK will never ever ever ever be a power house football program! You see basketball because it's the only positive thing to look forward to.. Have you not watched the last 4 games? Why in the hell would anybody want to come here for football? they keep putting stuff on here about LB'S and WR'S that have UK on the list and they never come.. You guys get mad! We aren't known for football and that's that! You need to be on a 24/7 bitch and complain hotline ! There isn't a program out there that's awesome at every sport ! We aren't either .. SO SUCK IT UP !!!!!!!

Let me clue you in on a little secret........people say UK is a basketball school because WE'VE WON 7 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND ARE THE WINNINGEST COLLEGE BASKETBALL PROGRAM OF ALL-TIME.

I'm so sick of the whining and complaining of some of our insecure football fans. Trust me, we'd all like to be reading about how successful our football program has become, or even having a fighters chance at covering the point spread vs LSU, but that ain't happening anytime soon.

  • UK football is AWFUL. Sorry, but it is what it is.

  • 1. When I watch UK football this year I see a team that is lacking in talent, poorly-inspired and often with a deer in the headlights look.

2, I'm willing to watch for signs of improvement the rest of the season, but not holding my breath

    3. If there is not significant improvement by the end of this season, I'm not sure another season will make much difference or be enough to save Joker's job

    4. Giving Joker another year may be a waste of a year this program cannot afford.

    5. Mitch will give Joker another season, so moot point.

    6. I don't believe UK can attract a top HC away from a big school so the next HC should be a top coordinator from a big school, preferrably one who has experience recruiting the south. If he is from the defensive side, his OC should be topnoth and the assoc HC (or vice versa)

    7. Whoever the next HC is, they should be very driven and proven motivators

    8. the next expenditure on football should be a HC and top staff - all the money in the world thrown at CWS means nothing until the staff is right

9 despite some fans rantings, there has been a decent amount of money spent on the football program facilities in the past decade - the coal lodge and craft center in basketball weren't slights to football because they were based on earmarked dollars for those facilities. The next phase of CWS improvements are on the board and will proceed as soon as the money is there and fits the overall campus scheme

    10. Basketball is not at fault for the current state of football.

I have made these points in various posts since this debacle of a season started. Repeating them here is enough. I don't enjoy rehashing the nnegative over and over (ditto after a basketball loss), I watched yesterday's game in its entirety and that is enough for me for the week. As a result, I would much rather post about something positive regarding UK sports and right now that is basketball (which, BTW, is in season). If there is a significant change in the football situation, I'll discuss it. Until then though, I'm in no mood for the whiney drivel about it being football season, don't post articles oir threads about basketball.

On a humorous (but morbid) note, when I read this:

I pictured some guy trying to run over his wife.
