Besides UK your favorite b-ball team+year(s)

  • My 3 alltime favorite NCAA b-ball teams were the Loyola Marymount teams of 1987-88 and 1988-89. Both of these teams had Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble on them and Paul Westhead was the HC. The 1987-88 team averaged 104 pts per game and had 23 games of 100+ pts. That team had 3 games of 140+ pts. They played at an incredible pace and scored an incredible # of points but also gave up a lot of points. This team went 28-4 that year. Then in 1988-89 they had 22 games of 100+ pts with a high point total of 181 pts in 1 of their games. This team averaged 112.5 pts per game and scored 160+pts in 4 games. This team finished 21-11. Both of these teams were so much fun to watch and the speed/pace of every game was lightening fast for all 40 minutes of each game. The last season Gathers and Kimble played was the 1989-90 season and averaged 122 pts per game and had 29 games of 100+ pts and 12 games of 130+ pts and finished 26-6 that season. These 3 years at LM were the most exciting time I ever had watching a particular school play and with the exception of the tragedy of Hank Gathers dying that season it was an exhilarating time in college b-ball.

  • UK has a basketball team? LoL. J/K. Great topic. I too loved Hank..man was a BEAST. Really thought he could become a top 10 all time NBA'er. Sad..sad story. Lets see..lately..the scrappy Butler teams. Going back..loved michigan with Glen Rice and Rumeal Robinson. Then again with the fab 5..i was 16 I think..and got thier autographs at the mall..Michigan..Ohio ST with J.Jackson, Okla ST with big country..and Indiana with Calbert Cheaney..and Funderburke..god..Lawrence Funderburke was a beast too. Watching Funder and CWEBB dunk after dunk.Only to get home to see Cats fall to Latteners shot. Ouch. I always liked the athletic Bama teams..no reason why they shouldnt have won it all with Sprewell and Robert Horry.

  • Would the lady Cats count? They are my second fav team.

I may catch hell for this....I really loved watching Vince Carter and Antwan Jameson pkay together at UNC. I was always satisfied and happy when they failed to make it past the final four (was either 3 or 4 consecutive years) but damn if that wasnt one of the most dominant duos ive seen in college hoops. That team only lacked a consistent shooter. Their PG (name elludes me) killed them in the tourney year after year with poor decisions and taking waay too many 3's. I remember the ACC championship when Jameson was really sick with the flu...he ended with like 22 pts and 21 rbs and could barely sit up straight on the bench...very Jordanesque.

Also enjoyed watching that George Washinton team that nade the final four run, the UNLV team with Larry Johnson (LOVED watching UNLV run Puke off the court), and Mich St. team with Cleeves was tough as nails. I hated the Fab 5 and wasnt a fan nor did i appreciate their impact in sports overall till i got older.

I love college sports. College sports are the only sports i have fav teams (wait...forgot ATL Braves...hardcore fan) as im mostly completely objective in the NFL, NBA, NHL etc...there are several teams ive enjoyed watching but honestly i simply dont have a second fav college basketball team...its UK or nothin.

  • This is how I feel. I will say during the BCG era I watched a lot of Coach Cal's Memphis teams. Those two years were pretty depressing for me, as I'm sure they were for us all, college basketball-wise.

  • My local school, the ETSU Bucs. Some fine teams in the early 90's led by Mister Jennings, deadly pg. Also Greg Dennis and Calvin Talford, who won the NCAA dunk contest. Came from nowhere, ranked as high as 8th or 9th at one point. Went to Cincinnati and beat both Xavier and UC, beat NC State 3 times, beat UT twice in Knoxville, beat Arizona in NCAA. Fun to watch, press/high pressure D, made lots of 3s.

I am Blue all the way but if you love college b-ball then you can appreciate what other teams have done. The team of Loyola Marymount from the late 80s was fun to watch and remember we were coming towards the end of the Sutton era and most people werent too happy then. If you only watch and appreciate KY b-ball then fine no problem but you have and will continue to miss some really good b-ball that is being played other than here at UK. Thanks for replying

  • This thread wasnt meant to diminish anyones love for the Cats because I too love the Cats . The only thing I am trying to do is to see if in the past short or long term if there were team(s) that you may have enjoyed watching. Just a quick mention of 1 other team and that was the LSU Tigers when Pistol Pete Marivich played and no one could stop him although LSU didnt win too many games he was just so fun to watch but those Loyola Marymount teams were the best IMO to watch. Thanks to all who reply.

  • Tubby turned me against kentucky basketball. I loved the best of Kentucky teams, Conley, Kron, Riley, Damper, Jaras. Rupps teams, Joe, B's teams, Issel was the best to evr wear the blue, Prat was a favorite.

I know there will be a ton of people who will disagree with both of us but Issel was IMO the greatest UK player ever to wear the Blue. Some will argue A. Davis or Wall or whoever but who has ever averaged 30+ pts here at KY, oh I think its Issel and he could rebound and shoot from the perimeter(not 3pts) but he wasnt a shot blocker of course but he did have 1 every now and then. I remember when freshman couldnt play with the varsity but played other teams freshman team and I would listen to that game and enjoy it as much as the varsity. I loved Tubbys rapport with his players but I just didnt like the pace he had his teams play at and Sutton wasnt any better with his 7 pass rule before a shot rule. I know and like Joe B. Hall and he really came through considering who he had to follow.
