Best Options for next football HC.

  • No Biker Boy Bobby Petrino talk here..guy is a joke..period..end of THAT discussion.
    This post is my opinions.

#1: Kirby Smart: why? hes 36, a defensive mastermind..with some offensive knowledge(coached rb's at Ga.) Hes eager for a HC gig, especially an SEC one. Elite recruiter. Would bring a nasty D to Lexington, and a tough, never back down attitiude we are sorely lacking.

#2 Charlie Strong: why? For many of the smae reasons as Smart, proven he can come in at a downtrodden program and instantly land 4 star talent from Fla and Ga.

#3: Phil Fulmer: Proven track record in SEC, BCS Title winner..clean program, respected. Brings Ron Zook in as DC..a great recruiter with ties all over. Would likely keep Pat Washington as WR's coach..mabye even Randy Sanders as QB coach..OC. Less transition for our offense. Defense would be better..

Some ideas.. HIre Dermontii Dawson to come in, coach centers..recruit OL...what young Offensive Lineman wouldnt listen to the NFL's greatest Center? The 1st pulling Center? Superbowl rings, Pro-Bowl rings, HOF...pay DD about 750k per year..I think our OL talent and play would only get lots better.

What I dont want..a HC that brings in a gimmick offense..a pass 60 times a game guy..ala Mumme, Dykes..this will never work in the SEC. Do you see Bama, LSU, Fla, Ga running a gimmicky offense? No..they establish the run..mix in a balanced number of passing plays..and hit you deep when you put 8 in the box. I want a coach that fields a confident, cock sure team that is mentally and physically TOUGH..a team that hits you whistle to whistle..all game long. Please ...no Cutcliffe..no tuberville...Give us Smart
Mitch..make the SMART choice!! pun intended!

  • of that group I'd take the Fullmer / Zook combo...that would be my back-up plan and I would be happy with that outcome.

I can't see Strong leaving Louisville to re-build Kentucky when he'll likely have better options like Arkansas, Auburn, etc. If those don't materialize he'll stay put and have a roster full of Jr's and Sr's next year and see what opens then.

I know there's a lot of talk about Smart, and I am sure he's an outstanding coach or he wouldn't be working for Saban, but realistically we have no idea how good of a head coach he might be...that's a risk I don't think we need to take. I've pointed this out several times at this point, but you have to consider that Smart has had some of the best defensive talent in the history of college football in his 5 years as DC...that tends to make coaches look really good, and sometimes better than they actually are - just ask Tubby Smith.

  • Why do people get on here wanting Strong? UL is smoke and mirrors. They've struggled to beat mediocre teams all year and would likely be be below .500 in the SEC. We should aim higher than 70 miles up the road.

  • All this silence has me thinking that a decision has been made and the hire made has been a safe hire. I sense a Fulmer hire. Nothing to go on other than a feeling. It could be gas. Go Cats!!

  • I have heard from people close to several large donors to the football program that is almost a done deal with the new head coach. I don't want to reveal info, but I will say one thing, his name rhymes with Smutch Clones......... That's all, I've already said too muchpray

Not to be curt, but I honestly just hope we do that well lol... Much less better.. I am keeping my own personal expectations low to ensure that I am pleasantly surprised

  • There are more worst candidates than him, at least his offense can be physical if needed. Regards to Strong, better strike while his name is hot. Coaches that sometimes wait to long tend to have something bad happen that screws there resume

    Why so serious?

  • ^^ One would imagine that w/ the BCS pimp-slapping the New Big Least down w/ the likes of CUSA, MWC, WAC, MAC & SunBelt...& Only insuring the 1 team from those conferences get a BCS invite...Not a single coach w/ championship aspirations will remain past 2013, unless they have no other options!

Pretty much my point unless he believes South Carolina is going to open next year. His best chance for the SEC is probably this year, if he wants to be a coach with NC hopes

Then why not sink a little lower (like most fans) and root for BP... think of how much more pleasantly surprised you could be. cheers

DD was in finacial trouble last year..youd think we could offer one of our greatest alum some cash to come help us out. I think Summers has done a great job..but Im only saying DD as a centers/OL recruiter..not full OL coach.
Me..I cant stand the thought of Bobby P here..dont want the guy..period.
In order..and yes..I know some of these arent gonna happen..but 4 the sake of argument..

Only way to be...funny how some posters think you believe everything you post will happen. I dont think we'll hire Dermontii..but I think it would be a Great thing to consider..bring back an alum that has reped Uk as a HOF, Pro Bowl, and Super bowl center for the great Steeler teams of the 80's. I always though the great Art Still coulda helped this program by recruiting and coaching up our De's...its to the point we must consider any option that could even possiblly help our football program gain some measure of respect in the SEC.

I'm cool with Fulmer and keeping Pat Washington and bringing in Ron Zook. But in no way am I cool with Randy Sanders staying as Offensive Coordinator. I can stomach him staying as the QB Coach but that's it. Randy Sanders is terrible as an OC. He's got a problem with being able to teach his players the system, he's got a problem with practicing the plays that he'll actually run in the game, and he's got a problem of being stubborn with not changing things after its apparent that your QB can't run the system that you are asking him to.

  • If Bobby Petrino is not number one on your list for the next Head Coach for UK football coach then you shouldn't even post or talk about it. That's blantant stupidity period! IMO!!type_angry

  • Doesn't get any more "blantantly" stupid than pulling out the old "agree with me or don't speak" line.

  • Bobby is fine by me, he would do a good job. I just don't think it's a good move to bring in anyone with less than 4 years head coaching experience. No coordinators should be on the list IMO. The program is in need of someone who can stabilize first, that may be too much for someone inexperienced.

I for dont think Chizik is a very good coach at all, he got hammered before going to TheBarn, had ScamNewton fall in his lap road him and a pretty good D to that National Championship. Then Cam, that D, and most importantly Gus left and hes getting hammered again.

Key word.. "respect". You're exactly right... that may be the most important factor to consider in this whole process (coaching search).
Until others in the SEC finally respect the product we put on the field... how can we? shrug
