Big 12 Vs. SEC New Year's Bowl Game

  • So it looks as if the SEC and Big 12 have thrown in their hats together to form a new Rose Bowl by having the winners of each conference play each other in a New Years day bowl. This is a very significant move as it will essentially force the BCS (or whatever it becomes) to look at the four conferences involved in these type bowl games with preferential treatment. This author is suggesting that it may be the death knell for the ACC, and I tend to agree. There has been an awful lot of smoke around Florida State and a possible move to the Big 12 lately, and I wonder if the Florida State president wasn't given a little "heads up" as to the fact that this may be going down. It was clear in his earlier memo that he wasn't a big fan of moving to the Big 12, but it may have to happen if they want to remain a relevant football entity.

The Big 12 and SEC are starting their version of the Rose Bowl. And that's bad news for the ACC and Big East.

  • Interesting! I like the idea and maybe this will be the beginning of the end of the corrupt NCAA as we know it.

Keep thinking that, lol. I'm not sure dissolution of the NCAA would end it's corrupt ways. biggrin

  • Could be the start of the 4 Super conferences. IF that happens I think we should grab UNC and Duke from the ACC and call it a day. The football side of things is already going to be the best in the land year in and year out no matter what happens. The SEC needs to shore up it's basketball side so adding UNC and Duke would be perfect as it would give us 3 Blue Blood programs to dominate the national scene.

or we could go for UNC and Maryland. Duke would likely get left out cause the only thing they bring to the table is academics, men's & women's basketball, and lacross. Let them go and join the Ivy League who they have often thought they compare too anyway. Their football program--and let's be honest this is all about football and $$$--will never be anything.

  • To be fair to Duke, they do compare very favorably to the Ivy League. They'll never get in though (too much of an old boys' club) and I think they value their basketball too much to make the jump. I don't think Ivy league schools offer athletic scholarships, but I may be wrong on that.

I think that people see the idea of 4 superconferences as a good thing because of "conference pride". People seem to like that the SEC beats up on everyone and that we are part of it. To be honest, I really hate all SEC schools except for Kentucky, LSU and Georgia. I only like LSU somewhat because of the Hat and Georgia just because it's a damned good school. Otherwise, they can all burn in a pit, as far as I'm concerned. I don't like the four superconference idea at all. I think we can see a taste of what that will be like with the superconference Big East. It's clear that Syracuse and Pitt weren't too keen on that either, and they bailed. I know it's about the football, but the end product of the super powered Big East was a Big Yawn. I would prefer to go back to having nice 8-10 sized conferences where everyone plays everyone every year.

I'd smack someone silly if I heard them say they liked UF or UT. UK fan I mean.

  • Granted I haven't read anything about this new bowl but from my understanding it will be the SEC Champ vs. the Big XII Champ as long as they aren't in the 4 team playoff. What I don't understand is how in the world will it ever occurr that both of those conference champions won't be part of the 4 team playoff? Seems to me it would be a rare thing that at least one of those wouldn't be included. Also if thoose teams aren't available, who plays in that game?

    I'm corn-fused. confused

The next available team from said conference. Now, not sure if that is based on conf record, div champ, or polls. This yr it would have been one of the following setups: OKLA (champ but not one of top 3 conf champs) vs Ark(polls); OU vs GA(other Div champ) and (also best conf record). This takes into account also that Bama wasn't available due to that they would have been in playoff as wildcard.
If I'm not mistaken, this yrs playoff (using top 3 champs and wildcard) would have been:
    LSU (SEC)
    Oregon (PAC-12)
    Wisconsin (B1G)
    Alabama (wildcard)

Not sure what the scenario would be if you only have 2 conf champs ranked in say top 5. Would they take 2 champs and 2 wildcards or top 3 champs regardless.

So what happens with the Sugar Bowl? They already had an agreement to take the top SEC not playing in the MNC game.

I think that this is the SEC and Big 12 positioning themselves to force a 4 team playoff with the "Big 4" conferences being the big players.

If the ACC goes under, the BIG would make a huge play for UNC and UVA, and I think they would go there unless those state legislatures forced Va. Tech and NC State to go along with them, similar to what OK and TX did last year to the PAC. The BIG is too prideful to take those non AAU schools. If the choice become the Big 12 or SEC for those 4 schools, I think they would choose SEC and we would have 18 teams. You absolutely have to take that package if you are the SEC. I think Maryland is a shoe-in for the BIG if realignment occurs. They are also rumored to want Ga. Tech. What the VA and NC legislatures decide to allow their 4 ACC schools to do will determine much of what happens for the SEC and the BIG. It is looking more and more like FSU and Clemson to the Big 12 is all but done. I love this stuff!
