Breaking: Bennett eliminates UK

  • Down to Oregon and UNLV, according to ZagsBlog.

  • His coaches' comments regarding both Florida and Kentucky seem very generic to me and seem to point to deeper academic issues.

I'm wondering if this involves PT, or the fact the eligibility is still in question, we'll see. You can easily see he's a Runnin' Rebel right now though.

More and more the buzz is that academics are a major issue, hence no Florida, no UK. Plus, UK could ill-afford putting all its eggs in Bennett's basket and him not being eligible.

Very true, so who's the next target? Or who does Calipari turn to next?

Still think UK takes two more: one guard, one forward. I would assume Amile Jefferson, Montrezl Harrell are the forward targets at this point.

Yeah, but looking like Jefferson could be playing for N.C. State, and Harrell possibly even re-committing to Va. Tech. As for the guard, thinking Torian Graham??

Doesn't look good for Graham either. I'd say Mays is número uno.

  • Welp, good luck to him, regardless. Looks like Mays/Jefferson/someone we haven't heard of yet could be coming up soon.

Part of that makes sense, but part doesn't. It's not like Oregon and UNLV are junior colleges.

They have easier standards of admission, though, from what I've heard. Jeff, can I send you a pm?

  • Just because he says he is down to those two doesn't mean he can get into school. He never took an official anywhere unless the across town visit to UNLV was one. I think he is unlikely to qualify and both UF and UK backed out because they still both need help and couldn't take a chance on him.

I gotta ask, if Amile Jefferson is gonna be playing for NC St, what's been stopping him? He was all set to announce for either them or dUKe over a month ago and then UK shoved its way back into the party. It would lead me to believe that he has been waiting to see what Bennett would do as far as UK goes. If that is so, I would expect some movement on Amile in the next week.

I think they'll take another guard. Mays said he will finish school and then take some visits in the next couple of weeks or so, then that timeframe would put a decision about the same time we get a final word on Graham's status.

,A lot of smoke ttonight also that Tony Trocha has decided to reclassify. If true, I'm sure that Cal will pursue him relentlessly no matter what, but that may be a while. I think if Jefferson or Harrell were to want to commit, Cal would take them to be sure of another inside guy and continue to go hard after Trocha.

    Sure. Anytime, Mike.

I don't think Oregon would have easier admissions than UK. Maybe UNLV, but not by a wide margin, I would think. All of these major schools are fairly close. It just doesn't add up.

  • I don't know the validity of it but there was a post on Rivals national board that indicated that UNLV had a lower admission standard for in-state student-athletes. With Bennett being at Findley Prep that may make his ability to attend UNLV easier than any other program can offer.

  • I would love to think that every Div 1 school must have atleast a 2.0 avg and say a 19 or better on the ACT to get in. ???? Or am I wrong. ????????
I am a grad from Centre, and I took the ACT in the 7th grade for practice and had a 21 lol. My lab can get a 17 on his act , !!!!!! lol

  • The reqirements to get into UNLV are as easy as rolling a 7-11 if you get my meaning.

To me that comes across the opposite of the intent.

  • The fact that Bennett never took an official visit is the tell-tale sign in all of this.

  • I'm just glad it's over. This recruitiment was strange from the beginning. I'm also glad this will mean more minutes for Wiltjer who I think will have a monster season next year.

I hope we finish the class with Jefferson and Mays.

Uk and florida's standards for admissions are the sec minimum standards which are the same as the mcas's freshman entrance standards. Jucos and transfers are more strict for the sec.

  • I go back to what Cal said when he first took the job, the program won't be for everybody. If you don't want to sacrifice some personal glory to play on an awesome team that plays for NC's, this place may not be for you.

Don't think it was as much the academic differential between UK/FLA and the other schools but more that the other schools were more willing to wait on Bennett.

UK/FLA both need a little help in the frontcourt and have to make hay while the sunshines. Wouldn't be able to add another player down the road if Bennett didn't qualify.

Oregon and UNLV, if they get Bennett either way, is a huge coup for them regardless.

I think it's moreso that Oregon and UNLV can take the risk rather than they have lesser standards. UK and UF can't go all in on Bennett. If they sign him and he doesn't qualify, that is a huge blow to a title run....whereas UNLV and Oregon have nothing to lose. They sign Bennett and he qualifies, then it's a huge win. If he doesn't qualify, it more than likely doesn't cost them someone else and it becomes a moot point.

    UK/UF have plan B's
Oregon/UNLV have no where else to turn, might as well take the risk.
