Bubble Update - Friday, March 15th

  • Yesterday was a good day for UK on the Bubble ... as 11 of 22 Bubble teams lost before UK even started tournament play in the SEC Tournament. Bubble teams that lost yesterday in conference tournaments:

    Arizona State (21-12)
    Arkansas (19-13)
    Baylor (18-14)
    California (20-11)
    Cincinnati (22-11)
    Colorado (21-11)
    Louisiana Tech (21-8)
    Minnesota (20-12)
    Oklahoma (20-11)
    Pittsburgh (24-8)
    Villanova (20-13)

There's already been one 'bid-stealer' win their conference tournament ... Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt. With many people considering Middle Tennessee a potential at-large team, Western's upset tournament championship could mean that the Sun Belt may get two bids to the NCAA ... 'stealing' a bid from the other Bubble teams.

Conference tournaments where we need to watch for potential bid-stealers:

    ** Atlantic 10 **
Bubble teams remaining > Temple, La Salle
    Bid-stealers remaining > UMass, Charlotte, St. Joseph's

    ** ACC **
Bubble teams remaining > Virginia, Maryland
Bid-stealers remaining > Florida State, Boston College

    ** Big 12 **
Bubble teams remaining > Iowa State

    ** Big Ten **
Bubble teams remaining > Iowa, Illinois
    Bid-stealers remaining > Nebraska

    ** Conference USA **
Bubble teams remaining > Southern Miss
    Bid-stealers remaining > UTEP, Tulsa

    ** Mid American **
    Bubble teams remaining > Akron
Bid-stealers remaining > Ohio, Western Michigan, Kent State

    ** Pac 12 **
    Bid-stealers remaining > Utah

    ** SEC **
Bubble teams remaining > Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Ole Miss
    Bid-stealers remaining > LSU, Vanderbilt

    ** WAC **
Bid-stealers remaining > New Mexico State, Texas-Arlington, Texas State, UTSA
NOTE: With Louisiana Tech's upset loss, one of the bid-stealers remaining is going to get the WAC automatic bid. So, the WAC will only steal a bid if Louisiana Tech makes it in as an at-large team. Otherwise, the WAC will still only get one bid.

  • Thanks for the update. I still believe that as long as we beat Vandy tonight we should be in the tourney solidly.

Yeah, just realized that. Even more reason we should beat Arky then....

  • Bubble dwellers LaSalle and Virginia both trail with about 7 minutes left in their games.

  • Virginia down 17 to N.C. State with two minutes left. That one's over. LaSalle trails Butler by 9 with three minutes left.

  • If Kentucky beats Vandy I think we're pretty safe at this point.

You just never know with this team.

  • Butler closes out LaSalle. Virginia about to lose. Those are two very good results if you're Kentucky.

  • Virginia (21-11) and Illinois (22-12) also both lost big today. And UT is not looking good at all against Bama late into the 2nd half with Jordan McRae in foul trouble.

Ain't that the truth. Every time I think we might be going to turn the corner, we lay a rotten, stinking egg.

  • Alabama's win definitely helps Kentucky...so long as the Cats do their part tonight.

  • Legit question: How is Minnesota a projected #9 seed having gone 5-11 last 16 with loss to Nebraska, Purdue, N-Western, Iowa in there?

  • agree with you. Their resume isn't much different than ours, although, facing teams like Indiana, Mich State, Michigan and ohio State regularly (and wisconsin) and getting wins agains some of them, gives them a little more solidity than facing teams like Tennessee, Arkansas and Alabama. It's just a lot of tougher games. Ky hasn't got bad losses (other than Georgia) but the wins are just ok, and the losses other than Duke, Louisville and Florida aren't even as impressive.

Yeah, I mean Minnesota should be in I just don't know how it is in so safely.

  • I think Minnesota should be an 11 or a 12, frankly, possibly in the first play-in round

  • Lunardi's updated Bracketology just moved Middle Tennessee in to the tournament to replace Tennessee ... which is bad news for Kentucky. The upset win of the Sun Belt tournament by Western Kentucky gave them the automatic bid for the Sun Belt. Otherwise, Middle Tennessee would likely have had the automatic bid meaning the Sun Belt would have only had one team instead of two ... and one more spot would have been available for bubble teams like UK.

I just can't fathom MTSU getting in over power conference bubble teams. It has one win that's any good - a home win over Ole Miss. Has played only three Top 50 teams. Sure, it's won 27 games but none of those teams are very good.

  • I will agree that a win tonight and we are in, regardless of anything else happening. Any bets on how the committee will set up a possible UK vs Tubby game? Of course, they don't really do that.......................
