Butch Jones

Butch has already turned down Illinois, Tennessee, and UCLA........and you think he's waiting for UK? .......NOT!

Where did you see this? I Don't remember his name ever coming up for those schools? I could be wrong?

  • How many people on this board knows enough about Jones that makes them think he would be good for UK. I watch a lot of football on tv and I don't see them on much. I don't think you can just go by their record because they sure don't play in a good conference.
I'm just asking. I don't understand why people are so high on him.

Don't know if I know enough really but have seen UC play on TV some. His teams seems to play hard and he runs a balanced offense maybe even a little favored toward the run which is a good thing in the SEC. If you can't run the ball you just don't win in this league. He's won at both his stops CMU and UC. Only 44 years old. What's not to like?

Now is he my first choice no. Petrino would be, but Jones would damn sure get a call.

  • He looks cool the way he wears that headset.. He has a nice, confident strut on the sidelines.. He sure talks a good game at halftime.. I like the way he covers his mouth with his clipboard so the other team can't read his lips.. That fist pump of his is Tigeresque..

LOL... That's about all any of us know about alot of these guys, is how they look and act...Most have no clue if they can coach or not or if it's there coordinators making all the calls and the reason for success, or maybe, it's just they have better players than most the teams they play...All I know is we've had coach after coach walk thru the doors and none of them have been very successful... Maybe they all were just bad coaches or maybe, just maybe, it's tough as hell to win in the SEC, especially at UK...

Wow. Thanks for the attempted joke. Not really. What a waste of time. Ignore button is on.

The big east won't be a bcs conference in two years.

and Jones won't be coaching in it either.

Hope you're right on the funding and the prospects of Jones - to - UK - that would be flat out awesome IMO pray

I have a serious question. Why would he leave UC and come to UK?

If the Big Least loses that auto bid, why would he stay?

  • I think Mitch needs to be talking with Jones' people now and trying to get this guy to move 85 miles south. It would be great to have a young innovative guy that has won at two different stops.

I think we could get Butch Jones for 2.5 mil/yr. That is an $800,000 increase from Joker's salary, but still well below other SEC coaches. I personally would love to see a contract that pays $400,000 per win for our coach with a minimum of 1.5 mil/yr guaranteed. You win 12 games, you get paid more than Saban.

I would say 50k per SEC win would be more realistic. Not just any win.

In terms of taking beat downs for 2/3 years. That's an awful take. Whoever coaches UK next year will inherit a roster that is pretty darn good in terms of the players in their first 3 years in the program. We'll have 2 or 3 very good qb's, a deep receiving corps, etc...

If David Williams takes the judgeship he is rumored to be eyeing then the prospects of having a renovated CWS and recruiting room goes up greatly.

I think Jones would love the opportunity to coach in lexington, especially when you consider the young talent on the roster.

I wouldn't count the BE out just yet! Currently outshining Big10 and ACC on the field. TV deal is imminent. I believe in 2 years, another "adjustment" in the CFB landscape will happen and all the conferences will be re-orged again. Don't take this the wrong way but, Butch won't cheat enough to be successful in the SEC. Y'all don't need a coach with character and morals...you need a snake. (re: Saban/Meyer/Petrino et al.)

I should have said it differently. No one who knows football would want Leach. His system would get killed in the SEC. Hell it's getting killed in the Pac 12 right now.

In all fairness his system worked well in a very strong Big 12. The Big 12 was very close to the SEC back then.

BUT, I don't want Leach. He reminds me of our last basketball coach. A headcase that we just don't need.

Leach had notable accomplishments at Kentucky and at Texas Tech.

    Kentucky

Four NCAA, 42 SEC, and 116 school records broken as Kentucky's offensive coordinator

    Texas Tech

    10 consecutive winning seasons
8 consecutive seasons with at least 8 wins
4 seasons with at least 9 wins
    1 season with 11 wins
    9 consecutive bowl appearances
5 bowl wins (most by any individual coach in the history of the program)
4 seasons completed with team ranked in the Top 25
19–11 record against in-state conference rivals Baylor, Texas, and Texas A&M
    53–11 record at home
2008 AP Big 12 Coach of the Year
2008 Big 12 Coach of the Year
Coached 1 Fred Biletnikoff Award (Best Wide Receiver) winner: Michael Crabtree (two-time winner)
Coached 1 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (Best Senior Quarterback) winner: Graham Harrell
Coached 1 Mosi Tatupu Award (Best Kick Returner) winner: Wes Welker
Coached 3 Sammy Baugh Trophy (Outstanding Quarterback) winners: Kliff Kingsbury, B.J. Symons, and Graham Harrell
More than 150 NCAA, Big 12 and school records broken as Texas Tech's head coach

Performance on the field has nothing to do with this. It's all about TV. And watching 2 Big East teams play doesn't get anybody in the country excited

Isn't that the truth. Rutgers vs USF or UL vs Cincy = who cares. Comparing the Big East to the Big 10 is a joke. Big 10 has a huge fanbase. Big East has nothing.

  • UC-L'Ville will dwarf the ratings of UK-UL. UK draws for hoops...FB, not so much. Fla, Bama, GA, LSU, SC...maybe TN the rest of the SEC is a middle of the pack team in ANY conference. Not trying to be nasty, just sayin'..........

I like Jones and Leavitt. In fact, I think Leavitt has probably learned a TON from jim harbaugh. Frankly, any of the guys from the Harbaugh tree are good options to me, either at Stanford or San Fran. If you guys recall, when brooks was under fire I was beating the drum to hire Harbaugh from San Diego University.

I also can't help but think that if Cutcliffe continues to win at Duke that he'll be on the list. He was rumored to be Barnhart's leading candidate when he had to hire brooks. Look at Ole Miss's record before and after Cutcliffe. Look at what he's done at Duke. He's not a high energy guy but he's a winner. He'd have a better environment and more resources at UK than he had at Ole miss or Duke.

Not so fast on Cutcliff and resourses. Duke just comitted $250 million to athletic improvement with a large chunk going to football. But I understand what you are talking about. Cutcliff isn't exciting but pretty effective. I'd still much rather have any the guys I mentioned above.

I'm talking about what he has worked with, not what he is going to get. His record this year and in the past has nothing to do with the $250 million upgrade to athletic facilities that is going to happen over the next few years at Duke.

Cutliffe? No way! He's 20-34 overall and 8-26 inn the ACC with this being his fifth year. They started good this season but really haven't played anyone that's any good except for Stanford who beat them 50-13. If your going to hire him I'd much rather keep Joker.

In his defense. He took over a non-existent program. Duke's tradition is worse than Vandy's. The savior, James Franklin, is getting his head beat in at vandy right now.

But Franklin is in his second year not 5th. And has play a hell of a lot tougher schedule. I do understand what your sayng about Duke being a terrible program though.

  • Whoever is hired has to move the needle on the excitement meter. It goes without saying that this is Barnhart's biggest hire. I don't think Cutcliffe would excite the fanbase. Maybe people don't know a lot about Jones but the fact he is at Cincy his name is a lot more recognizeable than someone at LA Tech or a coordinator at another SEC school. Barnhart has to hit this hire out of the park; this program is heading downhill fast and he needs someone who can change the momentum. I just hope he's smart enough to realize that the season ticket holders won't accept another year of Joker.
