Butch Jones to UT

  • Being reported here in Knoxville It will be announced this morning he has accepted job.

    KBerg54285

  • He may not be their first choice, but he's a good coach. It likely will take a little time to clean up the mess down there though.

    BlueRaider22

  • He has a meeting with UC players this a.m. early.

  • I think that pretty much sums it up to UK may have got the best hire out of all of the SEC openings. Arkansas had a big hire but we still dont know how he will do in the SEC. I know we dont know about Stoops either, but I picture Stoops being able to recruit the south better than Bielema.

    JCHS02

  • Stoops is a much better fit for UK than Bielema is for Arky. I'd take our hire over all the others and Louisville's extension personally. It just feels right. Seems like the perfect fit.

Agreed that Stoops is a good hire. Also, Malzahn was a good hire for Auburn. Most of the players already know his offensive system from 2011 and Ellis Johnson is a very good DC. Very smooth transition for Auburn.

Malzahn has proven one thing. He can win with cam Newton. Anybody can win with scam. WHat Malzahn hasn't proven is that he can win without cam.

I think it is poetic that UT hired our 3rd choice.

The UofL situation is also interesting. Charlie strong better pray that bridgewater doesn't get hurt next year.

I don't think Jones was UK's 3Rd choice. That was the first fire burning besides the Petrino want. I would say that Jones was first choice.

He most certainly was not our first choice.

Ok that's a pretty definitive statement. You must know more than 'I think'.

  • Even though it was reported I don't think Jones got offered the job. There was a lot of smoke but no fire. It was more his agent trying to get bigger jobs to bite which really didn't work. If Mitch had offered it would have been reported. From what I remember it wasn't reported by reputable sources.

Jones was 3rd behind stoops and McIntyre

Don't agree. Did you watch Arkansas State this past year? They had a really nice team, really hard to stop them on offense. Auburn's offense for the 3 years that Malzahn was there was really good.

He just won at Arkansas State without Cam, went 9-3 and won conference, only losing to Nebraska, Oregon, and WKU. Don't know what else he needs to prove.
Auburn won 8 games in 2009 with Chris Todd at Qb, wow, point made.
In 2011, they won 8 games also with Trotter at QB, wow another average QB, beat South Carolina and Florida.

Did you know that there is a thing in football called defense?

    hoptownukfan

  • Actually Smart was the first choice/feeler...along with Dungy...they both had feelers but neither were interested in UK...so Stoops would have been 3rd then Mcintyre and Jones...

No I didn't, that is new on me, lol. Although I did play QB in college. Ted Roof is an average DC, and that is why he got the boot from Auburn. He is doing better at PSU however. Recruiting and changing systems is why Chizik lost his job, period. Offense was the problem this year because they had the wrong personnel for the offense they were running after running Malzahn's system for 3 years.

Nope, Jones was UKs 1st offer, he accepted, then retracted.. McIntyre was still thought to be in contention for the job till the very end, so, he never turned the job down, or, if he did, it was way later than the Jones offer and before the Stoops offer.. Stoops was probably 2nd choice behind Jones and that's okay, he may have been higher initially had Mitch known he was interested..Remember, he reached out to UK about the position and got an interview early, but, Jones was offered before Stoops.. I'm glad we got Stoops and think he'll be great, but, I'd have been okay with Jones, as well..

  • Of all the SEC jobs, we were the only school to sign a coach who had no HC experience, which would lead me to believe that Jones was not our 3rd choice. I like our hire, but I think you cannot ignore that fact.

As i said, "you know more than 'I think'." I've no sources. Just how it smoked up the board.

I didn't even count Smart or Dungy they so quickly declined interest. Petrino was dismissed because dvp1 was gonna with draw his money. =)
Then as i remember it went Jones smoke, MacIntyre smoke, Stoops got hired. Like i said this board is my only source tho. Obviously not a very reliable source.

  • Great hire for UT. He will have them turned around within two years.
