CALIPARI MEDIA DAY thread

  • Cal says, to be a really good team, you need 3 pros on your team in all likelihood. Says "that's just how it is."

  • Cal says having the NBA guys around town late this summer has really helped the team from the standpoint of seeing first-hand how much work goes into being a pro.

Said Rondo's work ethic is unbelievable to watch and predicts a huge year for Rajon when the lockout ends. Also said that having Kevin Durant, maybe the best player in the game, working so hard pushes all of his guys to work harder.

  • Cal: System doesn't matter. What wins is good players who play together.

  • Reiterates that Teague is a "pitbull" on the ball defensively. Second or third time he's used that phrase to describe him.

  • Cal's session is now over... We're going to talk to the players.

We'll post notes from those interviews either here or in a new thread when we're done with those.

Cal: Teague has been the best in the weight room of any kid they've ever had. Calls him a pitbull. Says when he coaches him, he stares at him like he's hanging on every word.

Love hearing him referred to as a pitbull. He's going to be a monster on both ends IMO.

  • Of all the freshmen, Teague definitely carries himself with the most "swagger" right now. Oozes with confidence, which you like to see at the point.

Wiltjer is surprisingly confident. I think he's played against a lot of good people this summer and proven to himself that he belongs.

Davis is a quiet kid, but you can tell he knows he's pretty good.

Kidd-Gilchrist could be the most interesting. He's a dynamo on the court, but is still adjusting to the magnitude of UK basketball. You could tell he was a little in awe today. He's still a very young guy by comparison to most incoming freshmen, and his mom was careful to keep him sheltered during most of the recruiting process. This was his first real exposure to being surrounded by a dozen mics and cameras at the same time.

  • Quote of the day may have come from Doron Lamb ...

Q: You letting your hair grow out this year?

    A: Yea. I don't care no more.

  • Who is getting chill bumps already, just thinking about how fun this team is going to be?

I wonder if Gilchrist's career path will mirror that of Ron Mercer. Be the sixth man on one of the most talented teams in UK history and help win a championship, then come back as a sophomore and be a POY candidate. Hmmm...

Seriously, though, someone slap me in the face. It's way too early to even talk about this kind of stuff. headslap

With the things he does on both ends of the floor, I think it's going to be a monumental challenge to keep him out of the starting lineup. If nothing else, he pushes both Miller and Davis to play their butts off if they want to hear their names announced in pregame intros.

Ah the Honey Badger. How funny is it that Tyrann Mathieu's nickname is the Honey Badger. Go Cats!

Going to be quite nice to watch. I think Gilchrist will be very, very good by the time he's finished at UK. Hopefully he stays for a Sophomore year, that would be nice.

    Keep Calm & Stoops On..

To that end, what does everyone think is the most likely starting lineup? I know it can and will change from time to time, but I'm just talking about the most typical lineup for us this year. I'll go with:

    Teague
    Lamb
    Miller
    Jones
    Davis

With Gilchrist rotating in early and often? Wiltjer right behind him. But I can see Gilchrist making a push if Miller goes back to his Jeckyl & Hyde ways.
