Cal on Julius Mays

  • First comments I've seen from Cal on Mays:

“He’s a veteran guard who started at N.C. State. You understand that he is a major college player. He went to Wright State and was their leading scorer. He knows how to play, a great flow to the game, he can play the one or two. That’s exactly what we needed.

“He’s a great kid, no sidebar issues. The thing about playing at Kentucky, those things are absolutely highlighted. Stuff that happens in another program is not that big a deal. If it happens at Kentucky, it’s on “First Take,” it’s on the ticker, they’re doing a “30 for 30” movie on it. That’s just how it is. So when you’re talking (about) a kid like him, he’s an A/B student, he graduated, he’s going to graduate school.

“Say we start three freshmen and two sophomores, that’s what we did this year; we have a senior and a freshman off the bench, that’s what we did this year. So you talk about us being young again, yeah, we’re about as young as we were this year.”

  • The only thing I can criticize the Cal regime for can be summed-up in my reaction to title of thread by me thinking...."Who the hell is Julius Mays?"

I need a scorecard sent to me as to who I should be loving this fraction of a second.

Where have you gone, Darius Miller?

  • Mays scored 20+ 10 times last season.

I think you are immensely underestimating the importance of Mays on this team. This kid can play.
He can shoot, attack the rim, and more importantly brings senior leadership. One thing i love alot this kid other than the before mentioned is that his isbt a Wright St. kid whos never played real teams. He spent a year in the ACC before going to Wright St. and while at Wright St. he played against some of the best teams in the country. Being at KY or playing against the best teams will not phase him imo.

I don't believe he is the best addition to this incoming group but could easily be the most important.

  • IMO having a senior guard to help steady this young group of players could be big.

I don't think he was underestimating Mays, per se, I think it just took him a moment to remember who Mays was (it took me half a second as well) and his comment was directed at the mass turnover of players that we've seen under Cal.

Now with Darius gone, it may be a while before we have another guy come in and contribute as a freshmen yet stay and graduate in 4 years.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining and wouldn't want Cal to change anything, but I do really enjoy watching players develop and grow, and ultimately graduate from my alma mater.

  • Don't let anyone tell you Mays wasn't a very important addition to this team. The fact that he played at Wright State means next to nothing.

Norris Cole played at Cleveland State. Damian Lilliard at Weber State.

    ^ this exactly.

No doubt this Mays guy is awesome.

I just appreciated the players and fellow students who metriculated through school with me as opposed to uber-talented mercenaries.
