Cal on PG situation

  • On the SEC teleconference this morning, John Calipari said the point guard play over the next two days will determine who plays the bulk of the minutes.

UK really gotten nothing from Ryan Harrow the last couple games. Really like what Jarrod Polson has been doing on the other hand.

  • I have said this all year, bad guard play with regards to getting the right people the ball at the right time and getting the offense into a good flow. Not sure Polson is the right guy but he at least gives it his all and seems to care.

This just looks like too big a stage for Harrow doesn't mean he can't play just not strong enough mentally or physically to be PG at KY.

Don't disagree with any of that.

Agree 100%. Harrow has only given us maybe 2-3 good, solid games. As much as people complain about Archie and Alex's play, I find myself the most disappointed with Harrow. Kid played a year at NC State, not great minutes but still got some experience under his belt. And then practiced a whole year with a championship team against a very talented PG in Teague. I could go on, but I won't. I would much rather see Archie at the point because I felt he was starting to develop decently at the 1 spot. I love and appreciate Polson's hustle and effort, but he isn't talented or athletic enough to carry the team far enough as we all want.

  • And didnt they say in practice last year, that harrow was playing better than teague

    John Stewart

  • Yes they did say that. Fast forward to today, and I would kill to have Teague running the point. The amount of easy lobs he'd have thrown up to Noel and WCS would've been stupid.

  • I blame Cal for what is going on right now. He's the coach and he's the one that ran off Lamb and Teague and Jones. Put those boys on this team and we are probably the best team in the country. Jones is getting zero minutes, Lamb is hardly seeing the floor and Teague can't even play with Chicago having two point guards hurt. Cal thought Harrow could handle the load at point and he can't and this team has never found itself because of that one mistake. Just look at the other three teams what they all have in common is great guard play lead by a great point guard and great post play and thats on both ends of the court. Now some other fanbases are looking at us saying see I told you playing with freshman won't work but lets face it this team has no leaders and zero guard play. Tell you what let Alex and WCS and Wiltjer come back next year and see what a difference having a great point guard really makes, we should win it all next year and young or not we are going to be the favorites. With or without Wiggins we are going to be awesome I just want one of the three to come and for me I love Wiggins and wanted him badly but I think we could use Randle more or Gordon. We have plenty of scoring next year and what we need now it someone who can dominate the paint like Big Cuz and that is Julius Randle. It will be like the 2011 team with three point shooting we will be awesome next year.

I seriously doubt that...."Cal ran off Lamb, Teague, and Jones". They all three took the money and ran to the NBA. They may not be seeing the floor much (except in the D-League), but they are certainly well paid! I assume Cal could pull a Coach K move and play head games with them to return....but Cal has too much integrity and trust by the players to play that......

  • From what I read Lamb had one foot out the door after his freshman year and his Dad talked him into staying.

Jones had played like a beast all season. Whether it's for the rockets or their D League team. I don't think he's in the D League because he's struggling. Probably has more to do with the fact that they've drafted 17 forwards the last 3 years and they want to try and get something for one or more of them before contracts expire. Parsons might just be that guy. He's played well but it's clear that Jones is infinitely more talented.

  • Nobody ran off Lamb, Teague and Jones. Good god. Hell Lamb wanted to go pro after his frosh year. Teague was always gonna be one and done and Jones became a great player his soph year and guaranteed himself with that play a nice draft slot. What if one of them would have came back and had what happened to Nerlens happen to them. Then what would you be saying.

All this complaining will go away with the influx of talent and toughness we've got coming in next year. Just relax. Besides we would still be in the hunt had Nerlens not gone down.

  • What has happened with T. Beckham? Hurt?

Borrow money from a pessimist -- they don't expect it back.

That is what most have said about this year's team - already out the door before classes started. Explains the mind set.

Some of you get so upset when others don't always have positive things to say about our coach. Look when I see Florida, UNC, Duke, KU keeping talent for multiple years and UK is reloading or trying to reload everything every year it is tire some. Plus Cal is suppost to be looking out for these young men and he has said several times that the money is in the second contract. Well tell me this is Lamb, Jones or Teague going to get rich off their second contracts? No, and thats because they were not ready to go no matter how much talent they had they were not ready. Now the ones that were are playing major minutes right now like Wall, Cousins, Knight, Gilly, Davis, Patterson. I know Patrick didn't play much at first but look at what he's doing right now. I will say this TJ probably made a good decission but the other two didn't. And for me I think its our coaches job to make these young guy's understantd that they were going to hurt maybe even destroy any career they might have had by leaving too soon. Thats why I say it is Cals fault because other top tier coaches are able to talk their players who are even good enough to come back to school. Plus he didn't go out and make sure he had the players to replace them and left this team with zero upper classmen for leadership I mean he is to blame for that because he's the coach. Some will say but they got drafted in round one and say to you so did Orton and look his career is already over. The average career in that league is like seven years so no neither of Lamb or Teague should be in that league and anybody who thinks coach Cal didn't give them the ok to leave is either nieve or thinks he can't do no wrong. Well look at this years team even before Noel went down we lack one thing and thats guard play. And by the way he's the coach of the University of Kentucky and its his job to do not only whats best for the players but the university as well and last year he didn't look out for this year.

  • I'm sorry, but as much as I wish some guys had come back it is wrong to get upset at cal or them about it. Lamb was always going to be an undersized two guard. His stock wasn't going to rise as far as draft prospects. Teague could have benefited for sure, but he was the one that wanted to go the most.

After they won the title it is understandable that they all left. And no offense to anyone, but you don't know what cal told anyone. I have heard he has told a few guys to stay the last three years that left. We just don't know and he can't force kids to do anything.

  • I always laugh when people make the assumption that getting a college education is something that is valuable to every person in the US. Not only does a large chunk of the population have no business at all going to college, the value of a college education is becoming more and more questionable if you're going just to have something to do. I suspect that these young men would be much more inclined to study and do well if they were to follow their hoop dreams and then, if the mood strikes them and they've "struck out" in the league, come back to school on their own.
