Calipari talks Ryan Harrow situation after Morehead St. game

  • Here is transcript of what John Calipari had to say about Ryan Harrow's situation after tonight's game:

    Q. Can you update a little on Ryan Harrow?
COACH CALIPARI: Yeah, he practiced for two days. I say, "practiced" in the facility with us. He called yesterday and said, "Coach I've got an issue I've got to deal with, and my mom is here, and I've got to deal with it."
If I knew more, I would keep it from you, but I don't know more.

    Q. Question regarding when Ryan Harrow would return to the team …
COACH CALIPARI: Yes, it should be this weekend. It may be Friday but I don't know. We all love the kid, we want him to do well, we're trying to walk him through this. Mom is a little concerned; he's a great kid. We need him, but it's bigger than basketball for me.
You want the kid to be right, and you want to make sure in his mind he's right.

    Q. You've said that Kentucky is not for everyone. Is Ryan struggling with the adjustment of this?
COACH CALIPARI: I don't think so. No, I don't think it's that. Might be some of it, but I don't believe that. He was getting better; that's the sad thing about it. He had ‑‑ I was all over him.

  • You knew the point would come when a guard didn't take to Cal right. Feel for the kid, seems like a nice young man, hopes and prayers that he gets whatever is ailing him straightened out.

My sentiments exactly. I feel for the guy and hope what ever is going on with him gets straightened out. It is a different situation this year than last in that he was the "MAN" at PG this year and a lot of pressure goes with that. Although he was on the team and practiced he didnt play on game day so expectations from Cal and the fans just wasnt there. I really hope he comes back and gets turned around because KY could use him a lot. With him playing that releases Goodwin to concentrate on the SG position where he is at his best and playing a couple of minutes in relief at the point. Get well soon Ryan and come back strong.

  • Not that he or anyone that he knows will see this, but it should be reiterated by all UK fans. WE NEED RYAN! We need him to run this team. If he's having trouble with the pressure then call Marquis. He should be able to give him a few pointers.

There is a large section of the fanbase who likes to think the know basketball and that portion is extra loud. That is part of what puts pressure on this kid. Hopefully he can tune that out and get his mind right. I think Goodwin would be fine at the point, but this team needs him to reach it's full potential.

  • Harrow is such an explosive, electrifying type player..It has shown in spurts this year, but, he's just not been consistent enough yet.. Teague was the same way early in the year last year, then about February, the lights came on and he became the player we all thought he could be.. Hopefully, Ryan can do the same.. The talent's there, without question, but, at the same time, Cal is the type coach that is very demanding on his point guards, as he expects perfection because everything in the dribble drive goes thru the PG 1st and foremost.. It seems that Ryan is a little quiet for Cals liking and is trying to get him out of his shell and he's not responding too well to it right now..If he'll just listen to him and tone out the constructive criticism, like Marquis did, he'll be fine and get where he needs to be.. Alot of times, high rated kids like this get pampered so much coming up thru the ranks, it's a culture shock when the pampering stops and reality sets in, but, Cal knows what it takes to get to that next level and he's not going to coddle anyone.. Ask Orton, Liggins, Cousins and just about everyone else who's ever played for him, but, I guarantee you, when all's said and done, they look back and thank him for it..

  • Do you all think he is suffering from an anxiety issue just trying to deal with the stress that comes with his position?

  • I find it very strange that nothing has really been said about his situation. I assume we will find out all the answers if/when he returns to the team next week. If he misses another game after Friday, I will assume he will not be an effective part of this team, and could end up being a distraction unfortunately. If he is back, I guess it just gets chalked up as minor bump in the road, and we move forward. I hope everything works out for him!

I agree 100%. No way we can go where we want to go without him at the point....even if off the bench in a sixth man role.

Hope he can work through this and become the player we all know he can be.

No doubt thats part of the problem, like was said in an earlier post Cal demands a lot from his PGs and Ryan seems like he isnt grasping what Cal is trying to get through to him. I think he has the potential to be a good point guard for this team, but Im concerned he may not have the toughness to realize that potential. Get well soon Ryan.

Im not surprised we havent heard that much detail about whats wrong and we probably wont unless Ryan or his family releases the info, because Cal wont go into detail about his players when it concerns issues like this. We all just need to trust Cal to handle it the right way like he has in the past and pray that Ryan comes back soon and in better spirits.

  • Alot of people have a big problem with the big light on them. They are not able to deal with it.

I don't know this young mans problems but that could be it.

I wish him all the best. either here at UK or where ever life takes him.

  • At this point his health is far more important than basketball. Sometimes we all lose sight of that.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were something like that. Some kind of anxiety/depression issue. Maybe performance anxiety. Clearly just guessing and I hate to do that but we're not left with much to go on here. Ryan would probably be better off just coming out and letting everyone know what he's dealing with. He'd probably be surprised by the amount of support that he'd get. But then again he probably just wants to deal with this with family. Maybe he's not having fun playing the game of basketball anymore. This certainly reeks of a situation where the kid says sorry I just don't want to play anymore. Or else you'd think he'd be working through this with the team. I hope I'm wrong on that though. I guess on that front its encouraging that he did practice some the last week. I truly hope he gets it together. GOOD LUCK RYAN!! PRAYERS FOR YA!

I thought the way you have all along, since a couple of days after the Maryland game and put it in some threads also like you have done. The guy is having some problems and will have to work through them and that may mean he comes back strong or it may mean he wont return. Im making this perfectly clear that Im not saying he wont be back just saying its a possibility, thats all. Hang in there Ryan and come back as soon as you feel that you are ready.

  • The only way to get past this kind of thing, if that's what it is and it sure sounds like it is, is to get out there and face your fear. After the Baylor game we have a 4 game run with lesser competition before we meet UL. Bring him off the bench and let him ease his way back into form the next 2 games and then put him out there as the starting PG for the 4 game run and see if he can work through it before the UL game. That's what makes sense to me.
