Calipari's latest scheduling idea

  • The latest scheduling gimmick John Calipari threw at me was to get what he perceived as the top Kentucky nonconference opponents -- Indiana, North Carolina, Kansas and Louisville -- to agree to a scheduling rotation in which each team would play two home and two road games against the group each season so that all four teams were on each team's schedule. It sounds great, but it would be almost impossible to pull off with those other schools having other high-profile commitments with tournaments, neutral-site agreements and conference-mandated challenge games. UK is playing only Louisville on that list of teams next season.

  • Begs the question: If that's what Calipari wants to do why did he dig his heels in so much on not wanting to go back to Bloomington? Under this idea he'd have to do that at some point, probably every third or fourth year.

  • wonder if that would be the first step though towards a Cal-version of the Champions Classic: once that commitment has run its course, this mini-conference of blue bloods takes its place as a premier neutral-site "tournament" (obviously not an actual tourney crowning a champ, but you get the idea...)

I'd say it's because he doesn't just want a "traditional" home and home and doesn't want to be tied in. If they did this it's likely a flexible deal and not a 4 year contract.

Probably. More than likely though he's doing what he's the master at: throwing out an idea that looks great on paper, will excite fans of all the schools but is highly unlikely to work in actuality. That way, he can then say later that he tried to put this thing together and thus have a comeback when he's criticized for scheduling. Not that there's anything wrong with that approach, but he's mastered it unlike any of his contemporaries.

Just like throwing out the triple-header idea with football and the women's bball team?
