Cal's wound up on tonight's radio show...

  • I think the reaction to Cal's comments are the very reason most coaches in this day and time can't stay at a place like Kentucky for the remainder of their career. It wears on a person to constantly have to be holding the hand of such a demanding fanbase. Yeah we have every reason in the world to be demanding but we need to pick and choose our fights a little better than how Cal responded to a caller on a radio show.

Look at Rush Limbaugh, love him or hate him, he'll respond in a nasty way sometimes to a republican caller who asks a question about something that is irrelevant in the big picture. His intentions are not to degrade the caller but to enlighten those who are listening. To say hey why are you so hung up on this when you should be focusing on such and such.

In my opinion, Cal has earned the right to lay out his own agenda regarding this program and we can either fight him on these little irrelevant issues or we can can give him some latitude and trust that he has this university and program in his best interest, he just may have a different way of getting where we all want to go. Recruits are the lifeblood of this program and without them he doesn't have a job and our team isn't in the position we want it to be in year in and year out. Therefore Cal gears a lot of his comments on securing his premise that this is a players first program while at the same time expecting the fanbase to understand what his intentions are. Players first program on a national stage equals more talent coming in which increases the chances of us competing for championships which keeps the fanbase happy. We, the fans, just need to let go of Cal's hand and trust that he has our best interest at heart and let him use both hands to continue bringing in the talent we've grown accustomed to and to develope that talent in the best way he sees fit.

Cal understands your chances of getting to the final four and a possible championship increase dramatically when you're a 1 or 2 seed in the tournament. History proves this overwhelmingly. With the addition of A&M and Missouri our conference schedule has become much tougher. They are both currently ranked in the top 25. We more than likely will get Missouri twice and A&M once each year, maybe just one game against each, but those are potential loses, especially on the road. So eliminating one of the "three-headed monster" makes sense if you're primary objective for the regular season is to get a #1 or #2 seed year in and year out.

Let's give Cal some space in hopes that we prolong his time on our bench.

  • I think Cal and the fans will just have to disagree on this. He's not taking a position that our last several coaches haven't taken--and in fact probably every coach in the country takes with the exception of Tom Izzo and (if we include former coaches) Denny Crum.

Cal is making the argument because of SEC expansion, but the timing isn't great coming off a great Saturday afternoon when the stars lined up ( #1 vs. former #1, NBA lockout, a ton of talent on both sides) to where the entire sports world was interested in a college basketball game. That doesn't happen too often before we get to March and we could go years without seeing a matchup like that in the SEC.

  • wow. talk about a big misunderstanding. Calipari is the best. I dont listen to the show but talked to someone who does and everyone needs to calm down. enjoy the path

This is some very loose paraphrasing, but one of the first callers of the night offered him congratulations on beating UNC and said something to the effect of "the first of the three-headed monster" games that he wanted to see the Cats win -- the other two being IU and UofL.

Cal seemed to take offense to that comment and gave the "all games are the same" response. He came back later in the show and went on another rant about it, this time saying that the fans really don't understand and how it's not about what the fans want, it's about the players... yada yada yada.

It was just awkward and, like I said, a little off-putting.

I think Cal's tremendous for the UK program, but he needs to come to terms that the fans are what makes this program special. They're the reason he has a job here making $4M. You can say you're a players-first program (which is great) without belittling the importance of the fan. The program needs both to be special.

Cal says every chance he gets that the fans are what make the program special. His point was that he nor the team are looking at these three games as the "be all/end all". He's right. The focus is on the title not winning three games in December.

Cal knows its about the fans. But he is always recruiting and saying what he says is all about getting players.

I'm sorry, but that logic is absurd.

I'm sorry bit I agree with everything he said. I also agreed about the comments he made during the draft. I know its not popular but that how I feel. Cal understands how to handle this job more than anyone. The UK fanbase is like a smoking hot super model...(bare with me...) most are intimidated by the pressure that comes with it. Then, most who get a chance do nothing but kiss her ass and let her have her way. Well...that will never work. Sometimes you have to tell her to shut up n go make me a sammich! Point being, Cal knows that he has to stroke this fanbase more so than any other in all off sports (maybe Alabama ) but knows there are times he must check the fans. He is the master at this. Everything he does of says is calculated, but IMO he's just flat out honest. He will tell you how he sees it if you ask him.

Agreed. I was not offended by what he said (nor have ever been personally offended by anything he has said). Some of the comments here were totally uncalled for. Attacking the man's personality and his veracity in response to this radio interview is beyond the pale. I suspect Jeff wanted to start something in a slow day and obviously with some of us that is rather easy to do. Chill out guys.peace

Did you hear the original segment? That guy didn't need "checked." He called in and said congrats on beating one of the big three rivals. Cal turned it into his own agenda rant, not just once but again later in the show. Along the way he implied you, as fans, don't know jack. You don't know jack because you didn't play the game (his words) and you don't matter. The only thing that matters are the players.

You don't see why that would ruffle a few feathers?

Again, I understand and support his message about being a players-first program. It IS about them and their future. But the PROGRAM as a whole is also about the special fans who have helped make it what it is today. He doesn't have to belittle them in order to make his worthy point about the players.

Yes and no. Cal's point about all games being important is valid (teams must approach it that way) but that wasn't what the caller was saying or the spirit in which it was said. And it certainly didn't merit demeaning comments about fans and their significance. Cal realized that afterwards, and that's why he clarified it on his website. I think that was a wise thing to do.

You know, Cal's pushed almost all the right buttons since getting here. He's been WONDERFUL for the UK program, on and off the court. But that doesn't make him infallible, and the recent events at some other schools should serve as cautionary tales about deifying coaches based on big-time winning results. There's a *hint* of that in some of these comments about Cal. He delivers, so he can do no wrong. I recall much of the same being said about Pitino when he was here, and people completely changed their tune as soon as he was gone.

Just be careful. It's OK to say someone's great, but not perfect. None of us are.

I never said that specific person needed "checked" I said the fanbase and I still believe that. I love Cal's honesty and the way he communicates. Wrong or right. Did he go a bit strong? Maybe, but of all fanbases, the BBN should be the very dead last to get all sensitive over something their coach (winning coach) says. He loses his first game this year and I bet a large portion lose their sh*t. Watch n see. Last week on his show he ripped the dans that were booing at the UT game...GOOD FOR HIM! This fanbase is nuts and he has earned the right to say so IMO.

I thought it was simply silly the way so many got all dusted up over his draft day comments and I think getting riled up over this is as well.

He isn't perfect and I never said he was. I agreed with what he said last night. The caller specifically mentioned that we needed to get the next of the three headed monster. Was cal right for going on a rant? Maybe not. But he was right in his actual message that the three games we have here, UNC, UofL, and IU can NOT be played up within the program as any more important. That's part of the reason why Cal is considering dropping one. Frankly, I'd like to know another program with 3 regular home and away non-conference series? Does UNC have another one? Does KU have one? Does Louisville have one?

We now have the sec/big east challenge and possibly another road game in conference. Duke never plays an away non-conference game. Most MAJOR programs only play one. Every other year we play two... he's got a point...

    hoptownukfan

  • So, your going to rip an entire fan base because a few jokers are acting stupid? What's Cal trying to be premptive? The guy on the radio call in show was just trying to be complimentary and Cal should have just said, "thank you."

As long as he wins he's fine but he should not treat folks that way. If the guy was being a jerk and he needed to be straightened out then fine but that's not the case. I think he feels like he's got enough "change in his pocket" he can say whatever he wants. I love having Cal as UK's coach but I will never excuse anyone being a jerk. Also, I love UK basketball more than I love Cal. That's true of any coach.

If Cal leaves this alone it won't add up to anything.

  • I have mixed feelings about this. I agree with what he meant to say, at the same time he could've just been greatful and said thanks and moved on. I mostly agree with Jeff on this one.

The one thing that kind of gets on my nerves about Cal is he just talks and talks and talks. It's like listening to a 16 year old girl. If you don't know what I'm talking about listen to the post game show next game with Leach. He will ask one question, maybe two, and Cal will go on a tangent the rest of the show. Every single time.

I was on the front lines defending Cal and the team when we couldn't buy a road win last season, I also had the same comments when he made the infamous comments on draft night when we cornered the market on thee first round as well.

Although, I do agree had we lost to UNC alone last week I believe this thread would be a slight bit different. LOL.

And I'm not debating the schedule thing. He's got some good points. Just don't take it out on a fan who didn't intend to do anything but congratulate your ass on a nice win. lol

Cal turned it into a rant because he didn't like what Larry Ivy said in the LHL story about dropping potential rivals.
