I have mixed feelings about this. I agree with what he meant to say, at the same time he could've just been greatful and said thanks and moved on. I mostly agree with Jeff on this one.
The one thing that kind of gets on my nerves about Cal is he just talks and talks and talks. It's like listening to a 16 year old girl. If you don't know what I'm talking about listen to the post game show next game with Leach. He will ask one question, maybe two, and Cal will go on a tangent the rest of the show. Every single time.

That's his fault. Like others have noted nobody is perfect. Cal just rambles on most of the time not thinking about the reprecussions untile after the fact. That's why he took to his website to clarify. We are all guilty of this, just maybe not as much as him.
I can't defend him in this situation, but he does have to deal with a rather large section of the fanbase who doesn't understand some of the things he talks about, e.g. the greatest night of UK bball history comment.

I posted this on another site.......
Next year will probably be a down year for UK(probably a top 10-20 team) considering all the players we will be losing. Cal is just looking out for the team next season. We cant be playing Duke, Maryland, Louisville, UNC, Indiana and whoever we play in the big east/SEC challenge. That is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. Im sure the following year(2013) when UK is one of the best teams in the country Cal will schedule accordingly. People need to get over it. Our team next season will not be ready to play potentially SIX top 25 teams(non conference) only one of which will be at home. I don't care who you are, it is absolutely unfair to put that kind of pressure on a bunch of newcomers. The 2012 class is not the strongest class( pretty weak compared to 2009 or 2011 and even 2010), this is more about protecting this specific class, it wont be something that happens every year. Smart fans should realize this. Consider if UK doesnt get Muhammad and loses Teague, Davis, Gilchrist, Miller, Jones and Lamb, which is a real possibility....you guys really want to put that team through that kind of a grueling non-conference schedule? Come on now. I believe this is what Cal was alluding to on the radio.
What happens if we go 2-4 or 1-5 in those games? The fans will lose it. So yes I agree with Cal when he says this is about the players. It's the smart/fair thing to do for our team NEXT season. You dont want to take away their confidence in the 1st month or 2 of the season. The team that we will have next season will NOT be able to have success with that kind of a schedule(mentioned above). We cant afford to lose 4-5 games before we even get into January. Its about putting the program and PLAYERS in the best position to succeed.

I disagree with the notion that every games counts the same. They clearly don't, as the tournament committee looks at quality wins and losses. Beating UNC, Kansas, UL, etc. goes a lot further than beating the week conference opponents and SEC foes such ad Ole Miss and Georgia. He and the team deserve extra congrats for the big wins, and he needs to accept that instead of lecturing the fans.

Agree 100% with that. They're getting good guys in Goodwin, Poythress and Cauley, but there's not sure-fire NBA Lottery guy yet, and that means UK has to come down to earth a little bit if Shabazz doesn't jump on board. Even if he does jump on board, it's going to drop off a bit from what we've seen the last two years.

One point this brings up is what will Cal do when he does not have a Patterson, a Harrelson & Liggins, and a Miller to step in and give stability to the young line up? His inability to keep anyone of his own recruits beyond a few years may cause problems in the future. UK needs to get some of these guys to commit to them and to stay committed to them over a 3-4 year period. People dismiss this but just think about what each of these 4 guys have meant to us over the last 3 years.
I think he believed Poole might be that type of guy. However, no one will simply sit on the bench without any playing time. You have to throw those guys 5 minutes or so per game especially during these 20-50 point blow outs. Unless they are Kentucky kids ala Jon Hood it won't happen.
These guys will be very important when you play the UNC's, Ul's and IU's of the world.

So Tubby didn't bring in enough 5 star players and now Cal is being questioned for bringing in too many? Cal does not recruit one n done players...he simply recruits the best HS players in the country. When you have so much talent on the floor at once it makes everyone look like a first rounder regardless if they are ready or not, then the $$$ and the pro game starts taking a peek at these players and its buh bye now.
Orton wasn't supposed to be a 1 n done (although he did say he wanted to be all along) Bledsoe was thought by most to be at least a 2 year guy, as well as Knight.
The BBN simply cannot have it both ways. We cannot pull #1 recruiting classes every year then get upset over having to reload. College hoops is not the same as it used to be. The landscape has changed, and Cal has adapted and evolved with it better than anyone. In today's game I will gladly take talent over experience any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

If you read the entire post you would understand that comparing Cal to Tubby or disliking 5 star recrutis etc is not the issue. By no means am I attacking Cal.
The bigger issue is that experience makes a difference. We will need people like Patterson, Liggins, Harrelson, and Miller in the future but I don't know where they will come from. We're about to run out of them. I think UK needs to invest in some projects or some players that develop slower than others. I hope we bring in the best class every year but finding room for role players will be important. UNC, Duke, Uconn, etc does it and the last time I looked they win a lot of titles.
Cal complained about having to re-load every year and missing on some recruiting targets and or having a down class as far as talent (not having the superstars like Wall or Cousins etc) and this would cause him to lose to the UNC's the Dukes, the Kansas'.
If we had a solid group of Millers and Liggins etc it would help in the down years and the good years. Again, ask yourself. Where would we be without the 4 guys I've mentioned earlier?

I understand your point but what is Cal supposed to do? Turn away a 5 star prospect ranked in the top 3 at his position in favor of a project player? No way! Right now, UK is the IT school. The top players want to play here and play for Cal. You can't turn those kids away, especially for a project. Like I said, I get your point, but if I have to choose then ill take more talent versus less experience every time. IMO Cal has brought in one or two players each year that were not supposed to jump after 1 year, but IR just didn't work out that way. What about Wiljer? Hood? Vargas? Beckem? Harrow? These are all guys who more than likely will be here 2-4 years.
