Can anyone defend Joker after this disgrace?

  • Poor game plan, no motivation, out classed and badly out talented. Joker has set this program back 5 years from where Rich Brooks left it.

    TNCatfanforever

  • Our offense has looked really good. Running and throwing.

    hoptownukfan

  • UL completely disrespecting UK today. Going for it on 4th down, going for 2 point conversion in the first quarter, and talking tons of smack out on the field.

Seriously? Already, after one half, lol. Wow. We don't fumble on that last drive and it's a one possession game, jeez... Yeah the D looked bad, but it's one half bro...

  • Jokers the man to take us were UK wants football to go. NAIA.

    1) You are not watching the game, or 2) This is your first ever football game. Which is it?

UL has out played UK on offense, out played UK on defense, out coach UK on both sides of the ball, been more aggressive, played with more motivation, taken advantage of opportunities, etc.....

So, what are you "Seriously" talking about cause I am confused? shrug

  • Jesus, this BS already.
    Offense looks good.
D has got to change something up, they should not be running on us like that. Young guys are getting pushed backwards.
But also Bridgewater is the real deal. He's good.

  • Onside kick. Best coaching decision yet.

Yup it was, wish we would have gotten some points out of it. Now lets see if we can stop UL from scoring at all in the second half.

  • Blatant and obvious face mask on the fake punt. Doesn't excuse joker allowing minter to continue coaching the defense.

I hate to say this because I like Joker. But we won with less talent under Brooks because we had guys on staff who could develop those guys. We don't have that here right now. And I don't see it changing.

I expected the defense to not be good. But I didn't expect them to be this bad. It would've been FAR FAR worse if Strong hadn't put in Stein in the 3rd quarter.

The offense is okay but it's still sub par in the bigger scheme of things. And Louisville's defense is not that good. They may make a run through the Big East and get to a BCS bowl but they're going to get raped by whatever team they play there. This offense is going to struggle against SEC defenses. Maybe not as bad as we did last season, but it's still going to be bad.

I'm sorry, but we're the laughing stock of the conference right now. We'll be worse then Ole Miss and Vandy this season. And while a dip is expected there is absolutely no excuse for this kind ineptitude.

  • I truly cannot believe the D was this bad. I've got serious questions of Minter at this point. Pathetic. Without the fumbles on O we would have at least scored 21 probably 28 with a missed field goal. No excuse for the D. I swear that was awful to watch. Our coverage is pathetic. Might as well just bring the house every play because we sure as hell can't cover. When a pass is completed and guys are 10 yards from the receiver you know you are pathetic and have no idea how to coach. You gotta press with Minters style of D. Of course when guys are getting blown off the ball thats hard to do. We were terrible all over on D. Brause is slow as mud, Simpson makes no plays and his position is a position where plays should be made constantly. Dupree was non existent, Rumph and Cobble were getting pushed back 3-4 yards as soon as the ball was snapped. Ashley Lowery and Mikey Benton didn't make a single play on any ball. I don't know what to say for the D other than you better get better.

  • I think we should at least play more than one game before we declare our own team the laughing stock of the conference... Also, if we win the next two, we go to Florida in the exact same scenario as today, and We may play better then...

Joker Phillips was just as responsible for the success Brooks had as Brooks was!

We've turned Rich Brooks into some sort of Bear Bryant...half the people posting here wanted him fired along with Ron Hudson!

I liked Coach Brooks, I really did, and defended him when most were trying to run him out of town. Only after the 49-0 pasting at LSU did I really waiver and I crushed everybody that I could find. The thing is these things are not that simple and you or I don't have any control over the outcomes. They'll rise and fall on their own merits and losing sucks but until we've got no more games to play I've learned as I'm into my 30's that one needs to take a longview on things.

As a Coordinator. In hindsight, he should've never been handed the keys to the program without any HC experience. Even guys like Gus Malzahn have had to go to a smaller program to get the HC experience to move back up. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case here but it is.

And I'm not anointing Brooks as the end all be all. He understandably plateau'd and I think there's absolutely some validity to his comments about the lack of administrative support with the program. And Joker is a fantastic, SEC quality, Offensive Coordinator. He's just not a very good Head Coach right now. And we need a new Head Coach.

  • Defense is terrible. No way around it. Can't hold an edge, can't cover anybody, linebackers that get caught in traffic, and no push from DLINE(I have major questions about this-coaching may be the problem).
Offense well I'll hold judgement on that. Looked better but it could just be ul's defense isn't that good. Still can't throw a ball deep.
Coaching is questionable at best. Some of the play calling is crap. Down 18 you kick it. That puts you down two possessions. Instead you go for it and the game is over. Instead we run screens. Now all game you checked to screens if ul was blitzing. They knew they were coming.

    bigbluerules

  • not sure I can remember the last time a major college football coach goes home from a loss in a game where they did not use any of the 3 timeouts in either half. Amazing, really. not one time today did Joker think his O or D or special teams needed to think things over, or get a breather, or clarify a decision. Never once. Astounding.

Do you think UL is better than UF? Don't get me wrong, I love the Cats and, loath the Cards/Gators, but you can't be serious. UF is faster, bigger, stronger, and more talented than UL. I just hope we don't give up 60, they won't shut it down midway thru the 3rd qtr like UL did.

I'm not sold that UF is much better than UL, and I think we will play better simply because our young team will be three games more experienced, and hopefully have felt the success of winning a couple. I'm not saying we will win, just saying it will be a similar scenario to today as far as the matchup.

    Neither was James Franklin apparently.

At some point a lot of you are going to have to acknowledge a hard truth: It's Kentucky and it's going to take a long, long time, a consistent coaching staff, a demographic shift within the state, major money from donors (which has never existed) and probably a little luck to move up the football food chain.

Brooks, god love him, also drafted Lawrence Phillips and hired Ron Hudson. A lot of his problems with the administration are built around the fact that his "friends" (and Rich is nothing, if he's anything, but fiercely loyal) got swept out the door. Yes, some of them were good teachers of the game, but they were poor talent evaluators and recruiter. I call it (and I'm loathe to use a basketball analogy when discussing football) "the Tubby Smith Syndrome": which when your hubris as a teacher of the game overcomes common sense and rational thought when it comes to talent and recruiting.

I don't have any control over Joker Phillips but I'll still be a fan if he's here or he's not. I do think you give a coach 4 years...especially an alumni who helped bring your program back from where it was after the Mumme/Newton/Ivy era.

  • I'm trying to look at things from a non-bias objective and here's my .02 cents:

    1) UL is a better team, period. All around better team with a few more quality players. So, give there team some credit rather than blaming everything on what UK didn't do.

    2) UKs offense is much improved. They still lack the ability to go deep, but, alot of that is because the OL isn't very good at pass blocking, at least not sustaining blocks. But, the RBs ran hard, They moved the ball thru the air alot better than they did in 2011 and the WRs can actually catch the ball.

    3) I was disappointed in the DL. They got no pressure on the QB and were blown off the ball on running downs. We knew the secondary was going to be questionable already, so, our best shot at being an improved D, was in the trenches. Big letdown there as they really didn't give the secondary a fighting chance.

    4) Tackling has got to improve. I don't know how many times the UL RBs or QB would be hit at or behind the line, but, squirt out and pick up 8-10 yards. Again, the DL were missing alot of these tackles.

    5) I was encouraged by the special teams. I thought the receiving team did a good and the punting was solid as well as punt coverage.

    6) Coshick and Sanders looked great carrying the ball. They ran hard and finished runs. Sanders is gonna have to hold onto the ball though or he won't keep his position in the 2 deep, plain and simple.

    7) Smith played with poise, checked off his reads well, stepped up in the pocket and was very accurate. He will be fine, as long as line will give him some protection. Reminds me alot of Hartline in his last year.

    8) I do question some coaching decisions in the game, especially when they went for it on 4th and 9, from the 21-23 yd line. They needed 3 scores to get back in it, why not get the 3 and get within 15(2 tds) and try another onside kick or try and get a stop. There was plenty of time left to comeback at that time. Secondly, going for the fake punt that deep in your own territory showed a sign of desperation. You maybe go for the fake if it were 4th and 5 or less, but, they needed 16 yds. That was a bad, bad decision, imo.

    9) I think Collins is gonna be a playmaker for us. He impressed me. Boyd, also looks like he's finally gonna contribute. These are 2 good signs, imo.

    10) UL lived up to its billing. They're a legit Top 25 team, probably better than Vandy, Florida, Tennessee, Mizzou and maybe even SCarolina. They're better offensively than any of those teams and if they shore up the run defense, they'll be awefully hard to beat. I say this, because I think UK has a better chance of beating these SEC teams than they did UL, because those teams aren't near as potent offensively.

Overall, I saw some good things and saw some other things that need to be fixed quickly, mainly the OL giving better pass protection, the DL being able to hold the LOS better and tackling needs improvement. The WRs look better than expected, the running game looks better, Smith looks much more confident and poised and special teams look good. I think the Cats will take there lumps at times this year, like they did today, but, they will pull off a surprise or 2 before alls said and done. It's a long season and let's just hope they continue to progress and learn from each game.

I'll agree with you on all points except one. Ul is not all that good. The offense is good but their defense is not. UK's offense is predictable and lacks any deep threat and it still moved the ball on them. Now they will end up finishing in the Top 20 due to their schedule.

3 years ago Joker took over a team coming off multiple bowl victories and 2 years removed from a top 10 ranking......

  • Joker can't be excused for the defense being incredibly unsound and his decision to sit on the ball at the end of the first half. Also can't excuse the decision to not kick the field
Goal with 10+ minutes left to cut it to two scores.

The bright spot is that we are obviously much better on offense.

In terms of those folks saying we can't throw the ball downfield. That just isn't true. Uofl was giving us the underneath routes and we were taking them. Did you notice how much room our receivers had to run before somebody came up? That's because they were playing WAY deep. No sense in forcing it down field.
