  • Just got back from Breathitt vs Estill...Breathitt routed the Engineers 49-12..both Estill scores came against Breathitts JV defense. The starters were up 41-0 at half..then went on to score on thier 1st drive of the 2nd half. Richard Trent..Breathitts QB..is a smaller Tim Tebow..he passed for 3 TD's and ran for 1 more..with several runs over 20 yards. Trent is 6'1 about 200lbs and has a nice, very accurate 40 yard bullet pass, and big arm with touch on longer passes. He also runs a 4.53 40. Kid can play DB too..he had like 8 tackles and 2 forced fumbles playing Rover. Breathitt has about 3 to 4 players capable of playing d1 ball..but UK has no interest in them. Wes Noble,a 6'5 195lb WR..can elevate and haul in the jump balls all day long. Noble runs a 4.55 and benches very well..310 I think..not 100% on this. Another is Kyle Brewer..a soph. WR/RB/DB..Kyle is only 5'11 140 but he is way tougher than his size..and after taking last year off due to a broke collarbone..hes back..had 4 stops playing bandit, and hauled in 3 rec for 82 yards and 1td. Brewer already runs in the 4.48 range and will wind up 6'1 or 6'2 and about 180. Hes an athlete who holds the school record in the 800m,200m, and 110m hurdles as a sophomore. One last player is Corey Shouse..who returned to the Bobcats from Pike Central..Corey is a 6'1 215lb lb that is a big time hitter..he led the team with 19tkls, 2scks, and a int he returned inside the 5.
Schools like Morgan co has athletes and big, country strong farm boys..benching 350plus.
You see lots of 6'3 to 6'6 280 to 320lb OL/DL like Jacob Hyde.
Then theres guys like Jeffrey Canady..kid can play SEC ball, and what about Aaron Jackson from Frankfort? 6'3 190 runs a low 4.4, why not give this kid a shot?

  • If you fall in love with random high school talent, don't come to Texas. Limited spots and quite frankly Kentucky high school football is about as non competitive as it gets. I don't see a single Richard Trent thing on the internet excpet for Trent Richardson. Where did you get a 4.53 for him? Half the WR at the NFL combine run slower than a 4.53

If UK pins it hopes of turning the corner on its football results by focusing on KY talent it will nerver happen. There are not enough high schools and a dearth of talent. Yes there are 3-5 players each year that can make the grade; but unless we continue to mine GA, SC, FL, OH, and other nearby states it won’t happen.

3-5? There are that may 4 star athletes in the bluegrass in the 2013 class alone..lets count them..James Quick..Ryan White..Jason Hatcher..Ryan Timmons..Hunter Bivin..

For one..I dont fall in love with random talent. For second..I think I qualify as to evaluating talent..I played at Eastern Kentucky University, although I never started..I played on the 1995 State Title team for Breathitt Co. and coached football for over 7 years. I know Richard Trent runs a 4.53 because he did it at the Uk camp. I know his father. I coached both his brothers. A teammate of mine in highschool was John Rader..who played, started, for can you guess? UK. Rader was a 6'5 250 LB/.De..remember the int return for a TD that beat a tough Indiana squad that had Antuawn randel-El?
I am mistaken however..Trent is 6'2 210..and the kid can definitly play D1 ball..he already has offers from schools like Ball St. The fact you cant google him only helps my point..Eastern ky kids..especially..and kid over the state get less pub than most other states. And as for your comment about KY. prep ball being non-competitive..you realize that Louisville Trinity was the National #1 prep football team right? Im not saying the Bluegrass is Florida, Ga, or even a Pennsylvania..but there are good talent pools in state. Go watch a Breathitt vs Belfry, a Lex Cath vs Boyle, a Ft. Thomas vs Ryle, or a Trinity vs ST.X and tell me we dont have talent in state.

  • Oh, and so you know..Richard Trent..as a junior..passing stats..97-155 2,086yrds 25tds only 4ints rushed for 1,221yrds and 21 Tds..his team went 12-1. And he was yanked at halfttime of at least 5 games..due to Breathitt drilling thier opponets.

He plays small class football. Not saying he's not a good player, but gaudy numbers against that competition is not impressive.

Yeah..I do know 2013 is an especially good class..but If you pay attention..There has been spikes of 2013 type classes lately..What set the Bluegrass state behind was the fact that football was only being played in the summer and fall. States suck as Fla have more opportunity to have competitive games..with thier 7 on 7 AAU type programs. More and more athletes families are afforded an opportunity to play in the same type programs now..everywhere. I think Ky is a true sleeper state with mini-talent pools in Louisville Out West in Bowling Green to Paducah, Frankfort in central Ky and up north in Ft.Thomas. Counting the athletes that go out of state..the numbers have been in the 10-12 range for many of the last 5 to 7 years. Think Collinsworth, L.Dawson, J.Green, Jon Davis, and all the players that have gone to Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, Lousiville..as well as about 5 or 6 kids a year to WKU..a Ball St. We lost that talented CB to Virginia in Chase Minnifield.

It's class 3A football in Eastern Kentucky. I played class 2A & 3A football in Eastern Kentucky. Pass defense is non-existent. There's a reason they are not highly recruited players. Superstar in EKY = decent player anywhere else in the state. Decent player anywhere else in the state doesn't equal a D1 football player. The talent pool and competition just isn't there. There will be one or 2 every few years that can play ball from that area (David Jones, Channing Fugate).

  • UK cannot win in the SEC with KY players. They certainly need to target and pursue the best in-state players, but not at the cost of losing players in GA, FL, and AL.

  • UK took 5 players from from in-state lastyear if you include gray-shirt Harmon. That's a pretty good number if you ask me.

    footballcat65

  • I dont think anyone is saying that UK can win by just recruiting Kentucky High School football talent. I do think however the talent in state has improved in recent years and that UK needs to be able to evaluate and keep in state the players that are of SEC quality instead of letting them get away to teams out of state and UofL.

I would also refer anyone that doesnt think that in state talent is important to UK to look at the after spring depth chart. It list 10 EX Kentucky High school players as number one at their positions. Four of the starting OL are Kentucky kids.

  • For the OP I would suggest making a few trips into South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama in the fall on weekends. Check out he local papers while you're there and pick most any game you like. Then you will have a lot better perspective on the talent in the state of Kentucky.

I've watched high school football in Kentucky....and I've watched high school football in:

    Virginia
    Tennessee
    North Carolina
    South Carolina
    Georgia
    Florida
    Mississippi

I'd rank Kentucky at the bottom of that list in terms of talent....and not by a small margin. Realistically, Kentucky doesn't have what it takes in terms of population OR demographics to turn out many SEC level players in any given year.

  • Oh again, the stigma of playing football in Eastern Kentucky. Recruit strength and quickness and speed and they will win no matter who or were they played in hs because you can't coach those atributes.

The problem is that when you over look kids that may not be good enough to play at UK this year then that once in a life time player shows up and says, UK never recruits anyone from my school so I am going someplace else.

UK should be more involved with all Kentucky high schools and hold clinics, give teams tickets, do whatevre it takes to be the only team these kids want to play for.

So....you advocate taking kids from an area because some kid MAY one day not consider UK because they haven't recruited the area in the past? Seriously? BTW, it didn't appear to bother Jacob Hyde at all. I don't know about "once in a lifetime" player, but he he has the potential to be one of the best interior DL we've ever recruited from anywhere, let alone Kentucky.

  • I agree that UK can't focus solely on Kentucky kids by any stretch of the imagination. However, UK lets a lot of kids go to other area schools that they didn't give enough consideration and who have very nice careers. The area UK has missed out the most on in the past is OL. I can give you two kids from Eastern Kentucky who didn't even get a sniff from UK and went on to be All-conference at their schools, Nathan McPeek and Jeremy Sheffey. Sheffey was an Outland finalist at WVU and McPeek was a 4 year starter at Marshall.

I can't say UK should offer more scholarships to KY kids than they do, but I know they have missed on several they "should" have offered.

  • I think that UK should start recruiting the Brooks and Bonnafon(sp)kids at Trinity. Brooks a soph., Bonnafon a jr.

  • A smaller tim tebow? Lmao....

  • How about just focus on landing the top rated kids that don't reside in UL territory. Biven and Timmons would've been a great place to start. It doesn't get any more "BLUE" than Frankfort and Owensboro, KY.

Just surrender the city of Louisville, the largest population center in the state, 50% of whom are UK fans, and the area which produces year in and year out the largest number of D-1 football recruits? Really? Really?

    JHB4UK

  • Oh, man. So many things to address.

-2013 has been an exception, not a standard. It appears the talent in KY is getting better since they started allowing spring practices, but that hasn't been the trend in the past.

-Just because you have the size, doesn't mean you have the talent or the athleticism.

-How do you ignore the city of Louisville when recruiting in-state? Half of that city is Kentucky fans. You win some, you lose some. You have to pick your battles. There's no guarantee that the kids in the other part of the state are UK fans either.

-Florida, Texas, Georiga, etc...are packed with kids with the size, it's the stuff that goes with it that they lack.
