Changes coming to UK offense

A second injury to QB Max Smith will force Kentucky to change its offensive approach when the Cats welcome Mississippi State on Saturday.

  • They better get Patrick some reps in practice. With Jalen running the ball as a quarterback against SEC defenses the chances for injury are huge.
Towles is just one play away now. Hope the coaching staff is prepared this time unlike they were in the Florida game.

  • Is it confirmed that smith is out for an extended period of time? He rolled it to the inside and typically that isn't as bad as the dreaded "high" outside ankle sprain when the ankle is rolled out.

  • Towles was in a boot, maybe for precaution. Testing is today. Xray Saturday night confirmed no break.

Why was Towles in a boot?

    I'm sure he meant Smith.

  • The last thing they need to do is to plan running plays for Withlow. If Smith is out then they need to forge ahead with Withlow as a passer and scrambler and possibly play Newton and take their licks. The staff probably feels that if they can win a couple of games they may be retained so if I were them I would plan to get the best on the field for Samford, Arkansas, and Vandy. Withlow's feet can help him get some time to find a receiver but he looked really beat up last night and I doubt he will stay healthy if they let him get hit very much. We have to find a scheme where our QB is not a pinata back there for every team. We need to keep a TE in or a FB. Our QB's are consistently getting hammered.

  • A couple of things. That was a front seven last night that likely has 6 or 7 nfl players in it. Likely 2 top ten picks. Whitlow won't see nearly the talent against miss state. Whitlow also did himself no favors by drifting back so much instead if planting and stepping up.

By putting more designed run plays in we can put more simple play action passes in. Lets hope maxwell can go next week and perhaps we'll see a mix of both. Fortunately it was his left ankle and not his right ankle, his push off ankle.

If they have to replace Whitlow due to injury it will be Morgan.

Totally agree...Whitlow is young and has to learn, but the USC DE are already so good and they attack the outside shoulder of OT..so the QB has to stay 3-5 yards from center vs. drifting back and giving a direct target for the DE. Time and time again..Whitlow should take the shotgun and still take a few yards back and our OT had no chance...sort of like protecting for a punter how deep Whitlow was at times.

If Newton is used if Whitlow gets hurt then KY will go winless in the SEC but if Whitlow stays healthy they may be able to win 2 SEC games, but I think you have to get Towles ready to come in even tho they want to redshirt him this year. Newton just isnt a QB, tho he does try the talent just isnt there.hammer
