Charlotte Observer: Bobcats' pick at No. 2 too close to call?

  • Is the Bobcats' choice at No. 2 too close to call? | CharlotteObserver.com & The Charlotte Observer Newspaper

Kentuckyt care if he goes 30th or 10th or first come draft night. Robinson says he should be No. 1.

  • I would rather have MKG go to the Wizards at no. 3. Much better situation IMO.

Agree. Obviously, want him to do as well as possible financially, but long-term, Washington is probably a better situation than Carolina.

  • From what I'm hearing, looks like MKG to Charlotte is a long shot. More likely Cleveland at No. 4 though Wizards would be perfect for Cat fans.

Cleveland would be even better. Paired with elite, young PG and friend Kyrie Irving. thumbsup

From reading the replies it sounds as if the fans of the Bobcats want no part of MKG. My question is this, are we (those who see him a top 3 pick...I do not) seeing him thru blue tinted glasses, or is this simply a case of Carolina peeps hating on MKG because he played at UK?

All I know is that the debate of whether or not MKG shouldve stayed is irrelevant now. All we can do is hope the kid made the right decision and becomes a great pro. I'm afraid he is gong to drop further than he believes he will go (he will still go no lower than #5-#7) which would be agonizing to watch, but if he is given the time to develope his game he will be a give player for a long time. What shares me to death however is that Charlotte is not the place for that to happen. I agree that Washington or Cleveland (even tho I hate the Cavs) is a much better fit.

There are things that can be learned and things that can not.

One can not learn how to play with maximum effort. One can not learn how to jump, run, have quickness etc.. One Can learn how to shoot.

MKG has what is not teachable. He doesn't have what "is" teachable. I'd rather have a player who is willing to work with tons of raw talent than a player who may not be willing to work but is skilled. Especially if you aren't making a playoff run next year anyway.

Oh I couldn't agree more. My point was will GMs see things that way. Unfortunately, and somewhat unfairly, the second the lottery order is determined, everyone's game is tore down and picked apart. Will that effect MKG's positioning? I think it may. I still think he will be a very nice pro. Maybe not a perennial all star, but its definitely possible. I could also see him as a Robert Horry (not skill wise...just as a winner) or a Chauncy Billups (another guy who just knows how to win)

I believe MKG's heart n work effort alone will make an impact on a bad team immediately imo but for him to truly grow into his potential may take a couple of seasons, another reason why he may drop a bit.

The other question I asked was does anyone think the Bobcat fans are basing their opinions of wanting T Robinson over MKG based on actually skill and basketball or because he played at, and kicked UNC's ass) at Kentucky?

It's not like Thomas Robinson is a lazy turd. If I were the GM of a team like the Bobcats it would be a tough call. I suspect that Robinson would help them more in the immediate time frame.

Addendum- I personally think that Robinson is a lot like PPatterson. They're both a little short for the position they play, have very good athletic ability and have good heart and hustle. I can't dog on the Bobcats if they feel they need something now in Robinson.

I do not agree with you on this. Player play there whole lives and cannot learn a great jump shot.
Its not like you wake up one day and learn to shoot a ball. MKG will have a hard time in the NBA with the ugly jump shot that he has. This does not say that he cannot learn to shoot. But it is not as easy as you think. If it was every player would have a smooth looking jumper.

Its called hard work and shooting hundreds of jumpers a day. Those who want to can absolutely develope a J.
Look a Jason Kidd, was once a terrible 3 pointer shooter...now, one of NBA's all time best as far as made 3's. Jordan also became a much better 3 point shooter later in his career. Hell even Rondo (and MKG has a much better shot than Rajon) has a much better lookin J. With MKG's heart and determination I have no doubt he will develope a dependable jumper, but it will take time which could (moat likely will) cost him a couple of spots. Which I am ok with after seeing the draft order.

I think it's all about the jumper. As I've said all along, I've never seen the NBA invest such a high pick on a 6-6 guy with no proven ability to shoot. It would be unprecedented in the modern draft. That just tells you how much they think about this kid's physical tools, character and intangibles. Off the charts in those categories.

You can go ahead and add Derrick Rose and Lebron James to that list as well. Both have dramatically improved their jumpers since coming in the league. Granted, James came out of high school, but I think we are forgetting how young MKG is. He isn't much older than James was then.

IMO his age just adds to his ceiling, and his value.

While it's true that both of those have continued to improve their jumpers, neither struggled with it like MKG did this year. He shot 25% from 3 and hit only 4 of his last 27. He went from January 14 to March 25 hitting just 1 trey.

You do realize basically all Lebron could do coming out of high school was drive into the lane... He pretty much had no jumpshot at all. MKG's 18, and from myself watching a few of his high school games, has came a long way, and will continue to improve, his work ethic is outstanding. For example, in HS he was about a 50% FT shooter, improved in college to 76%. Ask MKG to improve in something and I guarantee through his determination he will succeed.

LeBron could always shoot a little bit, he just found it much easier to dominate off the drive. And he had decent form from the start. MKG's shot is unusual and will be more difficult to correct. That being said, I agree with you on the work ethic part, and I hope I can look back and say 3-4 years from now "Boy, was I ever wrong." Nothing would make me happier.

Jeff, I tried to post a workout video of MKG on here a whole back and he was alflat out drilling shot after shot after shot in that video.

I think his problem was nerves and confidence more than anything else, so he fell back on what he does best. I'll say it again: the kid was barely 18 all season long.

Also, you saying "Lebron could shoot a little" is basically proving my point, his jumper was more than a question mark. Did he improve it...hell yeah he did. Rose, same thing, first two years in the league defending him was possible by going under every screen. Not so much anymore. Luckily, Gilchrist isn't going to be asked to be put in many screen and rolls, do its not near as much of an overall issue.

    MossCat15

  • He seemed to have games where his shot was on, but then he would have games where he couldn't hit the side of a barn. That is called inconsistency, which can be corrected with practice, practice that he will get 24/7 now that he will be in the pros.

We'll have to agree to disagree on LeBron. I always read and heard that his bread and butter was driving to the hole, but I never heard anyone list any concerns about any part of his game. He was a lead-pipe lock of a superstar. No question. With MKG, I think a lot of his upside depends on how significantly he can add a consistent perimeter threat to his game, and with his form, that's going to be kind of challenging IMHO. However, Jason Kidd may have entered the NBA with one of the worst Js ever (one fan in Washington used to bring a sign to games that said "_ason Kidd") but he ranks among the all-time leaders in 3s made now. So you never know... I'll be rooting for him to prove me wrong in a big way.

Awful take. Derrick rose could t shoot when he got to the league. The knock on Jordan out of
College was that he couldn't shoot. Same with lebron, magic Johnson, tony Parker, Etc... Lots of players, once they turn pro develop great touch.

I think one distinction, though, is that those players didn't have the awkward form. There is more potential for shooting improvement when you don't have a busted motion from youth. Maybe he can get out of that, but I don't think it's the same thing as the others you list.
