Charlotte Observer: Bobcats' pick at No. 2 too close to call?

  • Jeff Drummond said...

We'll have to agree to disagree on LeBron. I always read and heard that his bread and butter was driving to the hole, but I never heard anyone list any concerns about any part of his game. He was a lead-pipe lock of a superstar. No question. With MKG, I think a lot of his upside depends on how significantly he can add a consistent perimeter threat to his game, and with his form, that's going to be kind of challenging IMHO. However, Jason Kidd may have entered the NBA with one of the worst Js ever (one fan in Washington used to bring a sign to games that said "_ason Kidd") but he ranks among the all-time leaders in 3s made now. So you never know... I'll be rooting for him to prove me wrong in a big way.

Hey damn it! That Jason Kidd reference came from Tommy "points" earlier in the thread!!!!!

Don't be a point Jacker Jeff! Lol

  • I know this is probably going to spark a huge debate but I just think there are a lot of similarities between MKG and Tim Tebow.

Neither is the most polished at what they do but the effect they are going to have on your team is going to be tremendous and I still think MKG can develop into a very, very good NBA player. Whatever he isn't able to do now, you know he's going to put in the work to get better.

Except for the fact that MKG has a ton of natural ability to play his position.

That's what I meant. So does Tim Tebow. Just not a polished NFL passer.

MKG brings a lot to the table in terms of playing the 3 in the NBA. But his shooting is the big knock. No doubt in my mind he'll put in the hours to get that shored up sooner rather than later.

You can go ahead and add Derrick Rose and Lebron James to that list as well. Both have dramatically improved their jumpers since coming in the league. Granted, James came out of high school, but I think we are forgetting how young MKG is. He isn't much older than James was then.

IMO his age just adds to his ceiling, and his value.

OK wow 3 or 4 players out of how many hundread. All of those players listed were very good at what they do when they went to the NBA. And of this note LBRONY had a nice jump shot it was just raw. MKG has an ugly jump shot.

    dvillepro1

  • For those who knock his shot and argue that he may not develop one I have something to say.

For anyone who has taught or been taught how to shoot properly it's very simple. Give me 2-3 months with a kid that works like MKG and he will be a much better shooter. It takes one word, or acronym, and a simple drill. B.E.E.F. Balance, eyes, elbow, follow through. The drill is you start in front of the rim and repeatedly shoot with that form. Shoot like that until it is automatic and slowly work your way out. If you're willing to put in the time you'll have a knock down shot and a pretty form.

If a NBA guy can't help MKG fix that at his age then he should be fired. It's as simple as that. Actually, while I'm at it I have no idea why someone in his life hasn't already taught him that. Specifically his high school coach. The other thing about his shot he needs to quit holding it at the peak of his jump. That drove me nuts watching this year.

Look we know you love this kid and do also. But I look at players from outside the box without bigblue glasses on. MKG has great ability. But the problem is there are a ton of players in the NBA with those same abilities. FAST, GREAT SLAHER, REBOUNDER and D. But most of them can shoot the rock.
You have to pick a player who has all the tools right now and or will develop them very soon. MKG may do that. But a jump shot is the hardest thing to develop. Just my OP.

What a poor post, and I'm not just saying that because you disagree with me. First of all, I picked those players because they were all high draft picks. I could have picked several more (in fact I added those names to another list of players someone else already posted), but that was a couple of other high draft picks who lacked jumpers right off the top of my head.
Second, you said "Lebron had a nice jump shot it was just raw". Hahaha what does that even mean? LOL. "All those players were good at what they do when they went to te NBA". So I guess MKG isn't good at what he does?? Is that why regardless with this "horrible" j is he a consensus top 5 pick?? You really need to take some more time thinking before you type.

Sorry to tell you this but your opinion is flat out wrong. Please, I would like you to make a list of players who posses the same traits at the same age as MKG. Hell, pick a couple in this same draft since there are obviously soo many of them. You will fail.

Jump shot the hardest thing to develop?? Negative again ghost rider. How about all the things that only god can give you, those are all impossible to develop. How about mental and physical toughness? How about tireless work ethic? All of these things are harder to develop than a jumper. In fact, they make it possible to develop a nice jumper sooner.

Some of the greatest players in the history of the game have been nothing but serviceable jump shooters. At this point in his career I would already consider MKG serviceable and there is no doubt he can get better. You can't teach the things he does well and you can teach the things he doesn't do well. You just don't get it. Come to terms with that and understand that you are 100% wrong on this subject.

No kidding. Wrong all the way around. I love the part where he said there are a ton of players in the NBA that are fast, great rebounders, slashers and great on D, but most of them can shoot the rock too!! Wow. Just, wow. Haha!! the only person I can think of that fits that bill is the King himself.

  • Sacramento hoping MKG slips to No. 5. MKG, Cousins, Hayes and Evans would be something else.

Kings need help to land Kidd-Gilchrist - Kings/NBA - The Sacramento Bee

The Kings' search for a small forward could end with Kentucky's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

  • Looks like the Cavs will choose between MKG and Harrison Barnes at No. 4.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist likes the Cleveland Cavaliers, but 'I just want to get picked'

Kentucky small forward is considered a strong choice to go No. 2 to Charlotte, but could fall to the Cavaliers at No. 4.

  • I agree with dville here. Great shooters just have it. Sure, you can work on it and improve it several people have. I'm sure Shaq worked on shooting free throws but at the end of the day he was still a horrible free throw shooter. If improving shooters was so easy there would be a lot more centers taking 3's.

Thats obviously not what we're talking about here. Completely missed the point.

  • Shaq couldn't improve his shooting because of his mits. That would be like asking you to improve at shooting a marble (ok, maybe a softball). A totally different situation, and it's not like MKG is starting from scratch, the kid knows how to shoot the damn basketball. Go look at the video that was posted in an earlier thread. Oh, one more thing: he doesnt need to be a great shooter, just a good enough shooter to keep people honest.

Those of you who act like his form is god awful, look at LBJ's form right now. His follow through comes out to the side of his head half the time and he shoots on his way down as opposed to at his peak half the time. Yet, he is effective as a jump shooter because of confidence and touch he has developed through practice.

I would have to become a Kings fan if that goes down. No doubt. That would be amazing.

That's going to be one tough call when it's down to brass tacks. You've got one guy with a ton of intangibles and one guy without. But one guy with questions about his shooting and another guy who could be a really strong perimeter scorer.

Personally, I go with MKG, but I can definitely see an NBA team talking themselves into Barnes based on the rationale I've offered earlier in this thread.

I'm completely torn on Barnes. One on hand, I think you may just be drafting a jump shooter and No. 4 may be a tad high for that.

But apparently, he tested off the charts athletically, already has an NBA body and I could see him growing into a big-time NBA scorer.

Just not sure I could pass on MKG. Just brings so much to the table.

  • LBJ is an average shooter at best. Mkg has terrible form but he does have extraordinary work ethic do I'm sure he will improve his shot. Just don't think it will ever be great with his form. That said I would still take him over Barnes because of defense, leadership, and intensity.

Of course he's not gonna be a great shooter. The point is he doesn't have to be.
