Class of 2013

  • Noticed the new ESPN rankings came out... UK commit Derek Willis dropped out of the top 100, meanwhile Troy Williams dropped to 42. A few other major moves, as Kasey Hill came in as #6, and James Young at #5. Still really like the look of this class. Don't think we have much of a chance at Parker, but I wonder, why is Cal still bothering with Williams?? I would just at least offer Young, Williams is just seeming too inconsistent with, who he likes, or when he even wants to make the decision. Cal also probably would like to get either Randle or Gordon (either would be a win-win). Always got the Harrison twins, who have reported now from their dad, that they may decide in the fall. Still wondering if Cal will show mid-major interest in Beejay Anya or Chris Walker now? We'll see as far as that goes. Any news/reactions on any of these storylines Chris/JD? As well as, I'm curious as to why Kuran Iverson's "stock" has pretty much dropped literally everywhere. At one point, this kid was top 5 in the class of 2013, now he's #80 and varies from site to site, thoughts on Iverson?? (And for the people who don't know, yes he is related to Allen Iverson).

  • Also, forgot, depending on how it goes, Andrew Wiggins could also be thrown in there if he does re-classify, which would still remain in doubt. Not sure what he's going to do though as far as re-classifying or staying.

  • I don't think we land Randle or Parker either one but I still think we pull in a monster class.

You could easily be right on Randle, as I know he really likes Duke, but I still like our chances with him more than that of Gordon.

Why? From what I can tell we're in good shape with both.

We trail people for both. Parker hasn't really decided much but I know he's said he wants to stay closer to home if it's possible because I believe his grandfather can't fly because of a medical condition and he wants him to be able to drive to see him play. Guess that would be occasionally possible at UK but not like it would at places like Michigan State where there are rumors that he's leaning. That's also assuming he doesn't just skip college by going on his Mormon mission and then go straight to the pros after it's over.

Randle is a tough nut to crack. Every major college is after him and everybody seems to think they have a very good shot. Also doesn't seem like Randle is tipping his hand at all so it's hard to tell where anyone stands. I will say I think Duke is in good shape because they have Matt Jones already on board and he's Randles best friend. We'll know a lot more about both when they start scheduling visits and trimming their lists but I do think we trail for both right now.

Of course we lead for the Harrisons and James Young so that's 3 of the Top 10 that we're in GREAT shape to land. The biggest problem I see is there are very few high ranked bigs in the 2013 class. If we were to miss on Parker and Randle which i think is a pretty good possibility we have to find bigs outside of them and that makes guys like Marcus Lee and Jonathon Williams III (even though I think we trail G Town for him) very important.

    1. It's no secret Willis has not played well of late. But he has been running with a new travel team. I think the pressure of being a UK commit and the lack of chemistry has hurt him. Again with him, he has all the tools, just about putting it all together.

    2. Williams did not play well at all in Hampton and has been struggling this spring as well. But there's a reason that Cal hasn't offered Young and I'll get to that in my Inklings tonight.

    3. Love Kasey Hill. Think he's the most dynamic point guard in the 2013 class.

    4. Don't think you'll see UK pursue Aaron Gordon or Beejay Anya. Anya just not a good fit for what UK does. As for Chris Walker, I have a sneaking suspicion that UK isn't done with him quite yet.

    5. As for Iverson, it's not all that uncommon for guys to be ranked very highly when they're young and then to have their stock plummet because their game doesn't develop as they get older.

Yeah, but you don't think they pursue Aaron Gordon? And I would still love Chris Walker, though he acts like a diva at times. And yeah on Iverson, I remember back to Dominique Ferguson who was committed to UK, who ultimately went to FIU, Ferguson was top 10 in his class, and ultimately fell to the bottom half of the rankings. Is UK still involved with Iverson? I know at one point they had been, not sure about it now.

No and even if they did, I just don't see it happening with Gordon. As for Iverson, nothing is ever 100 percent but I'd say highly, highly doubtful.

  • Some of the Michigan State fans are saying they're hearing that James Young now has a UK offer. If so that certainly changes things.

  • I can't call it a Monster class when we don't get one of the top 2 players.

It can still be amazing class but compared to 2011 class or 2009 class, i think it will be step behind.

However, if we get one of the top 2 parker/randle and combine it with Harrison Twins / Walker that would be a monster class.

Anytime you get 3 of the top 10 it's a Monster class. You get 4 it's definitely a Monster class. If we land 4 it's the best class at UK. You land 3 of the top 10 it's competing with last years class even without the #1 player.

Probably check his maturity this year and make sure he's eating right (I kid) and since he's been begging for an offer maybe shoot him an offer later if we miss on Parker and Randle.

I think at some point or another, UK is going to quit feeling around and make a real run at Walker. But that may depend on where they are with Julius Randle.

  • do you have inklings tonight?

  • I remember when Parker visited UK unofficially a few years ago. Steve Jones got an interview with him afterwards and he had without a doubt the most underwhelming reaction to his visit of any recruit that's visited since Calipari's been here.

I believe it was the same weekend as the harrison twins first trip who were completely blown away.

I've been maintaining that it doesn't much matter where UK stands right now with Parker, Randle, et al.

When it comes right down to it, UK is the toughest school to say no to in the country right now.

When the rubber meets the road, may be altogether different.

Meh, you are just looking at ranking numbers.

Unless you have some transcending player it isn't equal. If you compare 2011 and 2013, and don't realize that 2011 is step ahead of 2013 class without randle/paker i don't know what to tell you. (and also include 2009 class)

AD will be better than anybody from 2013 class. Not to mention Gilchrist and Teague were also in top 10.

Gilchrist also would be in the conversation as number 1 player in 2013 class if he was 2 years younger. Him, Randle and Paker would compete for top spot.

You're basing on ranking numbers too much, what you are saying is all NBA number 1 pick drafted is equal. I will take Lebron before I take Kwane brown. In fact, I would take Lebron and you can have 5 Kwame brown.

However, again It's still an great class.
