Commentary: Start Patrick Towles

  • ukblueforever said...

I read the article and I understand that he's the same type QB as Smith, but, that doesn't make him ready. That's all I'm saying. I didn't say the article said start him just to start him, but, I know a lot of fans feel that way just because of all his hype coming in.

Point taken and I agree with you actually - but it's possible that because the offense is geared toward pocket passers, maybe he'll do well b/c the system fits his style.

Of course he's going to make mistakes and have trouble with picking up blitzes...but thats expected with a freshman.

It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

  • Darrell, I think you're right in the long run -- Towles should be the starter for the rest of the season, for the reasons you stated. Whitlow can come in to run the Wildcat, as a change of pace. But since this will be Towles' first ever college game, I probably wouldn't add the pressure of being the statrter this week. Start Whitlow, who has already played in two games, then bring Patrick in early. In the second half, playthe one who does the best.

  • PLAY HIM,,AT LEAST YOU KNOW WHAT HE CAN OR WILL DO. TEAM NEEDS A LEADER LETS FIND OUT IF HE GOT IT . LOU.DIDNT WASTE TIME WHEN THEIR QB WENT DOWN & HE HAS TURNED OUT TO BE A GOOD ONE. LOVE JOKER BUT SOMETIMES HE WAITS TO LONG TO MAKE A DECISION. THOUGHT NEWTON SHOULD HAVE BEEN PULLED EARLIER THEN HE DID, BUT HELL I AM NOT THE COACH, KEEP UP GOOD WORK STILL BEHIND JOKER AND THIS TEAM, GIVE HIM MORE TIME.

  • Since they have already announced that both will play, I say we start the "experienced guy" biggrin and bring the "rookie" off the bench.

Seriously, this whole discussion about who's a starter and who's a backup is rather silly. Neither of these guys is going to go the distance, and they are each going to have their fair share of the snaps unless one or the other get's in big trouble, or heaven forbid, goes down.

  • Regarding highly rated recruits: play them when you get them.

  • Start a wide receiver at QB. That worked okay against Tenn last year.

It doesn't matter at this point who is ready. You have to start one of them. Seems like less changes to use Towels. Better chance of success with less changes. Smith wasn't that far into his starting role. Offense was tailored to that style of qb.

Personally I thought the game looked a little fast to Whitlow last week. He looked really good when USC was punch drunk. When they regained they're composure, he looked pretty Newtonesk. Throwing picks and pulling the ball down to run not finishing reads. That's just me tho. I usually see a different game than most on here.

If the game "seemed a little fast to Whitlow last week", what do you think it would have looked like to Towles who's never played a snap in college and would have been playing against one of the best DL in the country? I'm guessing it would have seemed really fast for him.

There is a reason that Whitlow has played over Towles so far and it has everything to do with who's ready now.
