Congratulations to Mitch Barnhart

  • I've got to say that even I wondered if we get a "big name" coach. A lot of that skepticism was because of the constant negativity and "petrino loving" that a few vocal internet fans we have.

But i've got to hand it to Mitch. He Hunkered down, surrounded himself with two or three really smart people and got the job done. He's proven time and again that when the pressure is on he hits a home run.

This hire could be a historical hire in UK football standards. We've got a BIG name. We've got a guy with the perfect pedigree and we've got a guy who knows how to coach great defense. We truly have never had anybody like this.

Congrats to Mitch Barnhart. Looks like we're playing with the big boys now.

  • He better go undefeated and win a national championship or the idiotic Mitch haters will gleefully pounce.

  • I'll be one of the first to eat crow and say I was waiting for Mitch to screw this thing up; he deserves a lot of credit for this hire and how he went about it.

Ha. As good of a hire this is, UK's upcoming senior class is not very strong. While UK will have a lot of depth, it will be mostly in the junior/sophomore classes. However, with the expected jump in recruiting, the 2014 season is looking really, really good.

Just to let you all know, here's the upcoming senior class: Johnathan George, Raymond Sanders, Cody Jones, Tyler Robinson, Jordan Aumiller, Patrick Ligon, Stephen Duff, Kevin Mitchell, Donte Rumph, Mister Cobble, Tristian Johnson, Avery Williamson, Joe Mansour, Anthony Kendrick, Dakotah Tyler.

While there are some good college players, are any of those NFL players? Maybe Avery Williamson. It might be the realist in me that is keeping me from getting too excited for the 2013 season, but after 2013, football could get really interesting inside Commonwealth Stadium.

  • By the way, congrats to Mitch for what looks to be a great hire, not just from a fandom perspective, but also in the eyes of recruits.

Big name coach??? Man, some of you guys just tow the company line huh?

I guess by your reasoning, Dooley is a big name coach too? we see how that worked out.

Being excited and considering Mark Stoops a big name is [toe]ing the company line?

Explain to me, exactly, how Derek Dooley and Mark Stoops should be considered equal when it comes to big names?

    Moron post of the day.

Dooley was a looser who had never even been a coordinator.

    Stoops is everything Dooley wasn't.

You think Stoops is a big name because he's related to someone in football. Same was thought of Dooley. Actually, besides being on the defensive side of the ball, Stoops is very similar to Joker at this point in his career. He might turn out to be sliced bread, but he also might turn out to be chopped liver!

Crowning Barnhart King because he hired a guy with no HC experience, is ridiculous, and driven by your agenda to support Barnhart over the best interest of UK. As far as how good of an HC Stoops is, only time is gonna tell.

  • I almost wrecked my truck when I heard the news on ESPN radio I was so ecstatic. Then my nephew started texting me all excited about the hire and I almost wrecked again. I was confident Mitch would hire the best available person WHO WANTED THE JOB. While it remains to be seen how this works out, there is no doubt that Mitch did his due diligence and brought in somebody who gives the faithful what they need the most, H-O-P-E!!!!!

So now you know what other people think?

I think Mark Stoops is a better hire than Derek Dooley and it has nothing to do with his name. Stoops has been a BCS-level coordinator for 8 years now. Prior to that, he replaced Chuck Pagano at Miami as DB coach, where he won a national championship. His defenses at Arizona hovered around or were in the top 25 after his first year. His defenses at FSU improved from #108 (prior to his hire) to #2 in the nation in 3 years.

Derek Dooley was a WR/TE/RB coach and recruiting coordinator who coached under Saban until 2006, when he became HC at La. Tech and had one winning season prior to being hired by Tennessee.

There is virtually no comparison at all between Dooley and Stoops, other than the fact that Dooley had a father famous for coaching at UGA and Stoops has brothers at OU and Youngstown State.

You have Dooley and Stoops very wrong. Dooley had a losing record at his previous job and a lot folks question the hire and said Tennessee hired him mainly due to being rushed last min cause Lane left right after a bowl game and to his name. Papa Dooley is a legend in the south.

Everyone and I mean everyone feels this is the right move about Stoops, great pedigree, been successful everywhere he has coached. Is he a proven head coach, no but I rather give him a shot than an unknown coordinator. Not like he doesn't have 3 brothers to seek advice from, especially Bob. Of course he's a risk but a very good one. Also, Joker was a coordinator here at Kentucky and no where else. Joker has been a position coach every where esle and Brooks and Mitch thought giving the show to him was the right thing to do at the time. Only thing the 2 have in common is that they got there first shot at being a HC at Kentucky

    Why so serious?

That's ridiculous. I take joy in making fun of the unrealistic UK football fan. I have been waiting since this thing started to pounce on them when Mitch hired a dud and these unrealistic people started comparing this new dud to Bear Bryant and Jesus Christ himself. If a negative cynical jerkwad like me says it's a homerun hire it's a homerun hire. It's a homerun hire. Now it will either end with him failing and getting fired or him turning it around and getting in a few bowl games and leaving for a better gig but strictly speaking for a hire he's the best UK could have hoped for and honestly I didn't think we'd end up getting anyone half as good.

Whether this guy fails or not it won't be Mitch's fault. He got the right guy. Now it's up to him to turn this thing around.
