2014 Football Recruiting Outlook.

  • UK just landed a verbal commitment from Thaddeus Snodgrass..a 6'1 178lb wr with good speed, acceleration, and hands. Snodgrass is the highest rated wr to ever commit to UK since Rivals ranking began. Very good get for UK, Snodgrass is a 4 star recruit that held offers from USCjr,WVU,Neb,Ohio St,ND,Penn ST.

With the spring game tomorrow..Uk will host a ton of talented recruits, a truly jaw dropping list of talent heavy on Ohio, Florida, and Georgia athletes.

A lot hinges on the decision of Conner QB Drew Barker. If the 6'4 215 gunslinger chooses Uk..I expect a sudden influx of Offensive talent to follow suit. None more important than Derek Kief..the elite 6'5 195lb Wr from Cincy LaSalle. Kief sports offers from Bama, Ohio St, and lots of other top programs. MIkel Horton, a 6'1 225lb rb from Middletown,Oh could join the party..as could Mike Edwards,a talented 5'11 185lb saftey from Cincy's Winton Woods. If these kids all come, they will be on stud S Darius West to join them. West is an elite db with great measurables at 6'0 196.
Matt Elam could be UK's biggest target both literally and figuratively. 6'6 355, Elam holds offers from Bama, UK, UofL, and lots more. If Stoops can convince the massive DT to stay home..it would prove huge. Elam is a rare combo of size, strength, and agility. Daniel Ross, the former Cat commit and Jeffersontown native could be Uk's next best option at DT..at 6'6 320 himself..Ross is one big boy and he moves well, being a DE out of high school. Nashville Enzworth's Michael Sawyers is another good DT that has UK high atop his list..the 6'3 285 DT is explosive and strong.

Linebacker is a big need area..and UK already has 1 commitment here from Dayton Wayne's Dorian Hendrix..a high 3 star recruit. At 6'1 220, Hendrix owns great speed and instincts, and he packs a whollop. Keep an eye on FSU verbal Delvin Purifoy, a talented 6'3 215 OLB with a world of raw talent. Talk is Purifoy likes Stoops and Eliot, and a flip could be in the works.Uk has offered nearly every top LB in the country..it would be nice to land a Clifton Garrett, Tre Williams, Dillon Bates,or a Raekwon McMillian, but dont hold your breath. Uk could have a punchers chance at Bates or Ga star Korie Rodgers, or Amos P Godby star jacob Pugh..but chances are Bama,Ga, or the like will win out come NSD. I see UK taking 3 to 4 LB's this class..if we flip Purifoy..things get interesting..I keep waiting for Uk to get involved with Snodgrass' teammate..ILB Davonte James..a 4 star prospect by some recruiting services, James would make for a very solid add to Hendrix and possibly Purifoy.

DB is another area in need of a talent injection. I fully expect Cincy's Mike Edwards to commit to UK soon..and he will try and recruit Lima's Darius West to join him. I dont feel comfortable saying Uk leads for West, but we are in the mix..and I would get very excited if he indeed comes to Lexington. Amos P Godby stars Deion Singleton and D'Eric Culver could join Edwards as Cat db's..Deion is a 4 star saftey with good range and quicks..while Culver is a high 3 star cb with good size at 6'0 190. Uk is hot after Ga commit Nick Glass..an elite 4 star saftey with a ton of talent. Its a uphill battle..but if we could get a db haul of Edwards,West,Singleton,Culver, and Glass..UK's db talent goes up tremendously.

WR and TE: Snodgrass is a great start to what I think will be a epic wr haul..in terms of talent if not numbers. If we land Derek Kief..thats two 4 star kids that are both rated higher than any prior UK wr commit. Nacarius Fant of Bowling Green is UK's if we offer..Fant is a 5'10 175lb playmaker in the mold of Craig Yeast/Dougie Allen. Darryl Long, the Westerville,Oh TE seems most likely to wind up at UK of the TE targets..Long is a 6'4 225lb athletic TE with good athletic ability. Austin Roberts of Carmel,Ind would make a great addition..at 6'3 220 he could play WR or TE..but he looks to have cooled on UK of late. Kendrick Holland of Winter Park,Fla loves UK, and I think this kid would make a fine addition to Uk's wr corps..6'3 175..fast, with long arms and sure hands, Holland would be a capable SEC wr in what could be a deep pool of talent by the time he walks on campus.

I like UK's targets at OL. Jarret LaRubbio is a big time sleeper..if you can still call him that..for a 3 star OG, he has a great offer list. 6'5 278 hes long and athletic, just the type of OL UK is looking for. St.Petersburg,Fla 4 star OG Isiah Wynn remains very high on UK..most think its Uk or Vandy here..Wynn is another athletic lineman at 6'3 275. Eric Shute of Glenbard,Ill is a Ot too keep a close eye on. I think Uk edges out Illinios here in a tight race. Nick Richardson is my personal top target at Ot, the Cats are in the race..but I think we fall short. Caleb Samuel of Macon,Ga is a 4 star OT that has the Cats on top...6'5 275 and very quick footed, Samuel could be recruited as a SDE too. I think Uk can win Samuels services. JeMerez Bowen is a intriguing OT to watch..as far as center..I like Brian Allen, but most think he will follow his brothers footsteps to Mich ST..(brother Jake is starting OC for the Spartys) Matt Pyke of Clinton, Tenn seems like a suitable option at OC, 6'3 297..solid 3 star recruit. I like Uk's chances with LaRubbio,Wynn,Samuel,Bowen, and Shute. These 5 would give Uk its best ever OL haul..and if something amazing happens and we land Nick Richardson or another elite OT..wow.

  • Excellent breakdown BBD, eager to see if anyone commits this weekend after the blue/white game

  • Yup..me too bish!! According to Josh..there are a couple kids that could possibly pop for Uk. You never know when a kid will fall in love..lets hope that strong Ohio Connection comes thru with flying colors. I would say Mike Edwards and darryl Long could commit soon. I think both are considered under commit watch by Josh. Josh has been dead on..accurate with his predictions..I hope he keeps it up. I think its great news that UK could be leading for Lima,Oh S Darius West. Kid is a beast!! Playmaker jumps out as the one word I would use to describe West. Fast, tough, intelligent football player. Kid could be a rb or wr easily.

The fact Derek Kief chose to attend UK's spring game over Ohio St's could be a telling sign UK could in fact lead for the #1 wr in the state of Ohio. We will see a migration of upset
Buckeye fans if and when Kief picks UK!!! (Love it!) IF..IF..we land Kief..UK's wr core gets so much better..Kief brings great size and length..something missing as we speak. You cant coach 6'5 200lbs at wr..thats a tough assignment for any corner..especially in the redzone!! ( I see fade routes coming!!) I would guess that if Drew Barker comes..Uk's chances only go up for Kief, and vise versa..the two are pals.
As I said in the OP..I really, really like UK's options at OL. Jarret LaRubbio and Isiah Wynn are two very good OG prospects..Wynn a 4star and JL a high 3/soon to be 4 star rated palyer. Eric Shute is a versatile OL. Caleb Samuel is a athletic 6'5 275 kid that could wind up 6'6,6'7 300+ with quick feet. Uk also likes Samuel as a SDE..so that should tell you hes a gifted athlete, the fact hes a solid 4 star recruit only sugar coats things.

All in all..you have to love the position UK is in right now. Stoops has changed the perception of UK. When the ink drys on NSD 2014..I truly think the BBN will be elated with this class. I think it will be top heavy with 4 star recruits..supported by solid 3 star kids with nice offer sheets..and who knows..perhaps a sprinkling of 1 or 2 5 star surprises. As long as we lock up Drew Barker and Matt Elam..everything else will be gravy to me!!

  • Another Ohio kid that is coming to the spring game is Zach Harmon from Toledo Central Catholic. They are the defending Division II State Champions in Ohio. He is Deshone Kizer's right gaurd, and center. He has 7 offers right now, when he came in Feb. for the spring visit he didn't have any, but he really liked what he saw. If you'd like to take a look at him.

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/489436/#highlights/29180429

He has offers from Toledo, BGSU, Miami of Ohio, Akron, Marshall, Eastern Michigan, Old Dominion.

  • Ohio ST also asked him to come as a preferred walk on..thanks for the link!! Nice size. +1 wharmon!!

  • Just curious, what type of weather for tomorrow? It's been a dream to play for Ohio State for him. They liked his tape, and called up to see if they could get him as a walk on. He told them that he'd love to play for them, but couldn't pass up the oppurtunity of a full ride to the schools that have currently offered him. A bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush.

  • +1 again. Exactly right my friend! Weather tomorrow..I think..highs in upper 50's..57-58..clear..(yes!!). All in all, not a bad day considering Kentucky spring weather is wild and anything but predictable. I hope the wind stays calm, and the sun stays up..mid 60's isnt out of the question. Can't wait to get to CWS for the 1st showing of Stoops Era UK football!! 40k +?? R U Kiddin me?? Those recruits are gonna be blown away. Lets get it together tomorrow and show these kids some love..that we know who they are, and that we want them here at UK in Blue and White. Signs work. Chants work. I like this: DREW---UK WANTS YOU ...
LoL. Ton of talented kids will be in attendence.

BTW.. you sound like you are pretty well wired in to the football recruiting circuit. Glad to have you aboard wharmon6..please feel free to post more often!! I enjoy everyone's input..big..BIG football fan..Im a former player and coach(at the middle and high school level) member of 1995 AA State champ Breathitt Co.. Ive been waiting for UK to get good at football for a long time now..great times are on the horizon!! I see you are not a VIP subscriber..if you are considering it: It's the best 9 bucks a month I spend on anything sports related!! Worth it many times over..Josh Edwards keeps us well informed..and hes dead on with his predicts..Chris too..and hes more Basketball..Matt May is outstanding on both and he does the Cat's Confidential posts that are awesome.

  • So you started the 42-0 run from down there at Breathitt. Let me ask you what is the difference between Kentucky highschool football and Ohio if any? I can never understand why we don't see more Kentucky recuits up in Ohio. Let me tell you the recruiting circut is fun in the beginning, but after you have been to a few schools it all seems to be the same. The facilites are nice, every one has a muscle milk contract or gatorade, dorms are usually good, academic help is there, can't beat the food, some are now providing IPads now so they don't miss assignments and are up to date on the schedule for the day.. They always say never go because of the coaches, because they may not be there, but that is hard for a kid do. The nice thing with the new staff is that they should be there for a good period of time. Now there are little things that seperate schools. The one that sticks out about Kentucky is the strength and conditioning coach and what he has brought from Florida St. The coaching staff is hungry and I believe that they'll turn the program around and make Kentucky proud. Look forward to seeing what Kentucky fans are like at the game tonight.

  • +1 for great memory!! we did indeed rack off 42 in a row.. and saw the likes of big John Rader go UK..(remember the fr for a td vs Randle El led Indiana? For the win..big ol Rader bumbling, stumbling, rumbling 50+ yrds for the game winning score!) Waylon Chapman and Shorty Combs went to EKu. I coached Justin haddix..among many others..kid had one of the greatest single seaons in high school football.. something like 4,000 passing yrds and 56tds...1,600 rushing yards and 28 tds rushing..had like 11 ints on defense as a rover..3 returned for td's. Started all 4 years at WKU. Could have went to Clemson or NC St as a DB. Channing Fugate..the Tennesse LB..wasted his opportunity so far..if he had come to UK and played LB to begin..he would be a starter..at 6'3 245 hes got legit 4.4 speed..he was a terrific HS RB..but his size and speed equates well to LB. Tough as nails.

Kentucky's largest obstacle is the KHSAA..they only just allowed the summer 7 on 7's the last 10 years.?? not sure. WE need organized summer competition..not just skeleton drills on steroids..Ky dosent have anything like the Fla,Tex,Ga,Cali kids in that they all have serious AAU type summer leagues. IF KY would do that..I think we could see a big increase in D1 talent here. YOu have to make a commitment to get better..invest..there is a great deal of untapped talent in this state. Coaches clinics would help..improve the quality of coaching..common sense dictates you will get better football players as a result.

I agree about Uk..Eric Korem will change the thinking about S&C programs..NFL teams have sent "scouts" to watch what UK is doing..under our HIgh Performance Coach Korem. Having dedicated nutritionalists..will help. Most teams have a guy..but hes basically a "on-call" type that the palyers must seek out..as I understand it..these dedicated guys seek the players out..keep them properly informed and monitor thier diet. I like it. Its gone way past x's and o's and gatorade and carbs..(we used to get plenty of spagetti dinners back in my day.) Its closer to rocket science nowadays..and thats good.

  • Not 100% sure but I don't think Kief made it today. Nice write-up btw, really nice.

  • You are right. Kief changed his mind for a third time..and went Ohio ST today..gosh..he missed a greta spring game. Hate the fact Kief chose to go to OSU's SG instead of the best one in UK history. Really..really want that kid. Still..not giving up on him..we have his teammate..and will have a handfull of his good pals in Barker, Snod, Edwards,Horton..possibly West. Thanks for the kind words..I try to post things that are enjoyable to read..most of my stuff is hypothetical..Im in no way an expert..I leave that to the CP247 staff.
I just like to break things down..present some possibilites..some coulda woulda shoulda type deals!!LoL.
AWesome spring game today..I had great seats..11th row sec 112!! THanks to Greg for the optimum seating!! You know who you are my good friend!!
