Alvonte Bell is being labled the best defensive prospect UK has landed since Cory Peters. They think this is a kid that Minter can build and entire defense around. He is a rare JUMBO DE that is great at both pass rushing and against the run. They have HUGE hopes in this kid.
"Landed" happens signing day.
Thanks for the info, MW.
Thanks for the info. I really like the direction the defense is going.
Good info, sounds like this kid could be really special

Obviously. But he verballed to UK instead of other schools. So until information comes out to the contrary, I think it's okay to use "landed".
Not to harp...but Bell isnt a jumbo de...hes 6'6 240..with good speed...hes a weak side de in 3-4 or ven a rush OLB in 3-4...Jacob Hyde is higher rated..and compares better to Corey Peters than Bell. I agree,. I love Alvonte Bell..his size..speed ratio is insane...I envision himplaying OLb as a rush backer in 3-4..too fts for slower OT's to handle, and big and long armed..strong enough to bull rush...not saying he wont fill out to 280 and become a jumbo DE..just saying he isnt a jumbo DE now. Love the info btw..hence the vote!!
Please dont take this as negativity..it isnt. Im a SSP 4 life baby!! LOL. I do like how were going for O-Line/D-Line first...and defense. Gotta love our defense under Minter man...I was so tired of Steve Browns passive, lame, sucky defense. If we had Minter in 2007..I think Uk would hae been national champs. Browns passive d let toomany teams drive the ball down the field with little effort..then wed get in the red zone and stiffen up..had the talent to blitz..we just didnt much..you have to put pressure on the opposing offense. Wed beat S.Carolina and Tenn that year with Minters defense..guaranteed..no easy FG's for UT. We would have spanked Ohio State just like LSU did..OSU couldnt cover LSU's wr's, no way they stop Burton, Johnson, and Tamme.
Alvonte Bell IS special..6'6 240, still growing..super long arms..will be a 4.55 40 guy...thats freakishly insane athleticism. I think the kid owns a 35-36" vertical as well..tell me thats not a perfect fit at OLB rush backer (basically a stand up de) in the 3-4?? If not..I dont know what is!! Love the "GET" hope we hold onto him..but he already had offers from FSU,Ohio ST, Notre Dame, and dozens more..dont see anyone else that could steal him...your talking a Jevon Kearse type DE/OLB..that will get the green light to decleat opposing QB's every saturday. Has a great motor too..watched him run down Running backs from behind on several occasions..and makes a ton of plays from the backside..thats just heart and hustle.
I think he could also be a NFL TE. BUt we need him to get sacks for us..so dont let me get 2 far ahead of myself!!lol
"will be a 4.55 40 guy"
Wow. That would be an incredible improvement in speed since his current best time is a 4.8+. LOL
Kearse was something like 210 lbs when he got to UF, and an absolute freak (hence the nickname) athletically. I don't think that's a great comparison for Bell, although I'd love if it was true. Obviously none of us can know with any certainty how this kid will ultimately fill out, but my guess is he ends up more like Jeremy Jarmon. Somewhere in the 270 to 290 range, which would definitely fit the Jumbo DE role. Either way, fingers crossed we can keep him on board, as he looks like a good one.
Minter, once again you try to bait people with your agenda. On scout the young man is listed as running a 4.6 forty. I'm really getting tired of proving you and your agenda wrong.
Bell isn't Kearse and he won't run sub 4.6 either. But that doesn't mean he won't be a really good college player at KY.
What agenda? This board sucks sometimes with vigilante dogma.
Minter brought to light the staff's genuine excitement about a player and some folks here automatically make him out to be Kearse! He then tempered the hype with fact... Get over it.
Let's just be happy that we will potentially have a DE who can give us pressure off the edge.
Keep posting, Minter -especially when you have good info such as this.
Bell will play our DE spot at which Ukwu is currently the starter.
Actually it was prove to be false. But you are correct. The thread started out ok with minter claiming to have good news. But it went south when he brought a lie or incredible misinformation. Unfortunately for Minter some folks take everything he says with a grain of salt since he is proven to be a blatant and prepared agenda poster. When you do what he does folks get very tired and frustrated and tend to jump his case a bit too much.
As you just said, maybe they were talking about his upside, in the future.
I thought "Jumbo DE" is how the staff was recruiting Swain who is 6'5" and 310 pounds. I'm excited about having Bell's verbal but I didn't think he was being recruited as a"Jumbo DE". Of course, I'm not overly knowledgeable on such things. That said, I am very pleased to have Bell's verbal.
Swain would end up at DT or OL unless he trims down a bit.

as a jumbo DE I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Chapman be one guy who could slide in there and be right at home.
What is the difference between a DE and a Jumbo DE? In other words, what size range would make a player a "Jumbo DE"? Note that I'm not disagreeing but rather asking about something I don't know.
I could be wrong but I think it is basically the difference between a man being suited to play DE in a 3-4 and DE in a 4 man front. If you have a 4 man front the DE is over the tackle and often on his outside shoulder where speed and quickness are more important than sheer bulk. These guys are typically 6'4" and in the 250 lb range. In a 3 man front the DE (one or both) often end up inside the OT and in this case they are basically playing DT most of the time. They need to be over 280 lbs in most cases and very strong to stand up and stuff the OL. The DE's in a 3-4 alignment are big guys and they need the quickness to be able to slide outside the OT but again size and strength is more important. They do not usually drop in coverage like a 4-3 can on occasion.
That helps some, thanks.
In a "true" 3-4 de's never play inside the o-tackle. They typically play straight up in what is called a 4 technique. In our defense there is a nt,
That shades, a d-tackle that plays a 3 technique (outside shoulder of guard), and a 5 technique that is the wyndham/ukwu position. We don't have a jumbo d-end in our defense. It's more of a proto-type d-end that plays on the same side as the linebacker/safety type. The 3 technique and olb/d-end hybrid (dupree) play on the other. We don't play a true 3-4. We play a multiple front defense with hybrid/crossover athletes In a couple of positions. At
Times last year we went to a jumbo front taking Dupree or Wilson out and bringing in another d-tackle and at others we played 2 d-end types with one d- tackle/nt People have a desire to pencil in people to positions but the bottom line is that our staff is recruiting athletes that will grow into positions. Hyde is likely the nt of the future.
