Came across something Andre' Woodson told me about Maxwell Smith during spring ball that is kind of what I've been trying to tell people who ask about the QB situation: For whatever reason, Max has that intangible quality that good quarterbacks always possess. When an ex-QB says it about another, you take notice:
"Guys have nothing but confidence in him," Woodson said. "He has one of those personalities where everyone wants to be around him and that's a great thing when the quarterback has that. When they love him and respect him they'll play for him and listen to him. For us, that's huge. And he's hard on himself. He expects to be great."
Crucial at that spot. When the other guys will go to war with you, so to speak, it can make all the difference in the world.
Now... How's he throwing the ball?

I remember reading that. Seems like Andre has had good things to say about Max from the very beginning. I definitely take notice when Andre speaks. He was a great QB here and orchestrated a season that was very close to being a masterpiece for UK fans. I wonder what that season would have been had we had a different D coordinator. It never made sense to me to have an explosive offense but a D that never took any chances.
I haven't seen him throw lately but for some reason I am more concerned with how players are catching rather than throwing.
Good to hear. I do also remember Woodson making some pretty positive comments about Newton though, so it's hard to say what's genuine, and what's coach speak. Still, from the moment he stepped on the field, Max did seem to have command of things, so I am hopeful that that he will take commad and shine this year. If the O-line blocks for him, and the wr's catch the ball, I believe Max will be a very pleasant surprise this season.
I'd take bets that it's better than Newton is.
I really liked how Smith reacted to his spring game performance. He played fairly well but instead he focused on what he did wrong and what he had to do better. Then he was right back in the film room. That's what great QBs do.
Yeah BlueRaider, that is the $64 question.
I remember reading Andre say that before(earlier this year). It sure seemed like at the Spring Game that they listened to him more and he did very well.
Pat Washington is going to make a huge--HUGE--difference in the WR unit this year. He is a major upgrade in the coaching department over Tee. For that reason alone I think our offense will be vastly improved. I know he is also the 'passing game coordinator" and wonder what kind of impact he may have on the offensive playcalling.
Anyone else see the irony of Andre Woodson being one of the Video Analyst for the coaching staff? I know he ended his career here as a film room maniac, but if you recall his first couple years he didn't put in the work necessary when it came to the film study. He loathed it and thought it wasn't necessary. Man, what a difference a little maturity can make. I'm proud of Woodson and all his accomplishments and love that he is on staff here.
The meanest dog in Taiwan.
June is historically the optimism month in UK football lore. Then come grades, injury and bar fights of July- then camp.
Lest I remind, Shane Boyd was a workout, leader-maven...hero of June.
Especially comming from Fedora's explosive offensive system the last few seasons
If you watch Max on the sidelines he is all over the place. He talks to receivers and backs and encourages the OL. He is very active and interacts with everyone. He is clearly a leader. It remains to be seen how good a college QB he can become but he has all the tools and the mental approach to be successful. Boy we really need him to play well.
Sorry, duplicate post
A man walks into a bar with an alligator under his arm and asks, "do you serve lawyers?"
The bartender answers, "sure we serve lawyers".
The man replies, "in that case I will have a beer and for me and a lawyer for my alligator".

It wasn't that the d never took chances. Steve Brown's defense was a VERY basic defense that was suseptable to being thrashed by spread teams. Brooks greatest quality, his loyalty, was also his greatest weakness.
Hope Max comes in and secures the job and continues to raise his game. That would enable Towles to get that RS year.
Barring and God forbid (please PLEEEEASE 6 lb 9 ounce baby Jesus we pray) an injury to Maxwell "Agent" Smith, i don't see a scenario that Towells doesn't RS.
Which imo is the only way to go.
I've been screaming all year that I really believe our WRs are going to be pretty good this year and because of that Agent Smith is gonna have a big year. I've said several times that I think he has 2500+ yards, 20+ TDs, and single digit INTS (i may be a bit low on the INTS)
After his (Smith's) 1st start, i was all in. This kid has hat "IT" factor that so many people talk about. His a natural leader. This team loves this kid and they will go to war for him...defense included.
I also believe that we could be looking at a QB controversy next year between Smith and Towells, and that could easily become a 3 way controversy with Phillips down the road. I have a really strong gut feeling about that kid.
On a side note...i have tried for a year now to tag Smith with a nickname. Does Agent Smith really Tgats bad? Lol. Help me out then guys. If Agent Smith sucks so much then lets hear some other ideas.
Steve Brown took over for Mike Archer in Andre's senior season and our defensive numbers were greatly improved during that year. Depth was our biggest problem in 2007, we ran out of gas during the second half of the season. Not really sure how loyalty (good or bad) plays into this equation.
THank You rWhit! UK has fielded some great teams..just not a complete package. I hated Steve Browns system, passive..bend dont break. If you watch all the good defensive teams..Ravens, Steelers, Bama,LSU...they all attack. They force you to make quick decsions and rush 6 or more and mix in disguised zones to keep you guessing. IF we had last years defense with 07's O, wed won it all.
Not to have already offered Drew Barker? Are you serious? Didnt losing a in city kid in Kyle Bolin teach you anthing? Bolin is good. Very good. Barker is even better. C'mon and quit wasting time.
Maxwell Smith is a very good QB. KID is smart, accurate, has a strong arm..can make all the throws. Andto hear he has that magnetism that all the greats have..that presence that would make you follow him into a hailstrom of bullets...thats something you cant coach. I think this kid is bonafied NFL starter with 3 more years under Randy Sanders. Look what Randy did with Woodson and Hartline...both were horrible when they arrived and bothwere all-SEC ish when they left. Andfre Woodson came here to Breathitt County for the honey bowl in 2002.? He went 4-12 with like 83 yards and no scores...he already had a uk offer.. I was like..omg this kid..no way he plays in SEC.
Max Smith worled with ex-Bears QB Eric Kramer..so tis kid was molded to the position from an early age..he will standin the pocket..let a play develop..and take a hit to make a big play. He looked like a SEC QB man, that Georgia game..kid outplayed Aaron Murray...played tough. That was as a 18 year old..now..with a full year learning the playbook and working with his team as the starter...getting his timing down. I think Smith is gonna shock a lot of Cat fans wanting to see Towles..I think Smith holds him off untill Smith leaves for the NFL draft.
Steve coached some of the most talented, deep and coach able defenses in uk history and still couldn't field a quality defense. Consider that we now have as many or more defensive players om the nfl than offensive yet we were still do awful
Under brown. He was awful, no other way to cut it. His schemes were misers lead. If you has read my posts in the past I laid out specifically why Steve brown's defense was so bad against the spread.
Back to the topic of Maxwell Smith: I like how he went to Erik Kramer's quarterback camp in California before starting up with UK. I hope that pays huge dividends.
I remember last yr Mr Woodson said that not lasts yrs but this yrs offense could be better than what we had in 07. With Mad Maxs under center I feel very confident in our Qb. Anyway it goes this will be a surprise yr for most fans.
Alot of fans are saying 2-10 just as many are saying 6-6 7-5 or better. So someone will be shocked by this yr one way or the other.
My hope for our team is 7-5 or better cause i still think we are one yr away from fielding the best UK team that I've seen in my life time. May be wrong but thats my opinion.
BTW - for those having trouble with our incoming QB's name it's Towles - not Towels (pronounced Toles)
T - O - W - L - E - S
The human brain is amazing, even if the middle letters are scrambled the brain can recognize the word if the first and last letters are right. like this, teh imencioing qbarteucak is nmead towles, pounronecd Toles
